william42··on “I hate almost all software” — Ryan Dahl
On the other hand, there are things that you want to make difficult, like stealing credit card information.
william42··on “I hate almost all software” — Ryan Dahl
Have you heard of GoboLinux[1]? It revamps the directory structure for exactly this reason.

william42··on China set to launch own space station within days
A google search gives a lot of results, but I think you mean this: http://www.amazon.com/Red-Moon-Rising-Sputnik-Rivalries/dp/0...

Is this true?

william42··on “I hate almost all software” — Ryan Dahl
The problem is that the simple and quick solution has to be hacked around when the problem set changes and that's how we get all these hacks.
william42··on Hey Google, I want my cache links back
Isn't Google incredibly famous for their dedication to A/B testing?
william42··on Princeton bans academics from handing copyright to journal publishers
The main thing the journals produce is prestige.
william42··on Xerox PARC, Apple, and the truth about innovation.
Which just makes it even more tragic that such bright people are working for the king of patent trolls.
william42··on Diebold voting machines can be hacked by remote control
That's what happens when a major voting machine company publically states that they are going to deliver the election to the Republicans.
william42··on Why do HN commenters have so much Facebook Connect angst?
At least Google is an OpenID provider, so you can provide Google, Yahoo, etc. buttons that are actually OpenID buttons, and then have a general OpenID field, and let your users choose.
william42··on SlideShare ditches Flash for HTML5
This so very much. Although I'd like one that does the same to twitter and G+ buttons...maybe I should take a look through the code for Facebook Disconnect and do it myself...
william42··on How to Rock an Algorithms Interview
YC uses HN usernames internally.
william42··on How to Rock an Algorithms Interview
It's why Microsoft Bob was released, IIRC.
william42··on [dead]
http://www.fairsearch.org/about-fairsearch/ Microsoft seems to be one of many. Looks like it's mostly Microsoft and plane seat booking sites.
william42··on "When I design software, I really try hard to make it simple."
Does Lua not have the startup time issues of Python/Ruby? If it does, then to counteract the lack of threads you'd probably use a coroutine-based system like gevent and Python's greenlets.
william42··on All of life has been utterly, profoundly changed thanks to Facebook...
No, the difference between MySpace and Tumblr is that the latter has a dashboard that gets rid of everyone's theme and by extension their autoplaying music, etc.
william42··on OpenBSD imports nginx into tree as future apache replacement
Didn't he initially use some proprietary tool called BitKeeper?
william42··on Hey CS Paper writers, please show your code
If the code is that different from the paper, why was that paper published?
william42··on I was once a Facebook fool
HTTP, HTML, and Javascript. (I will say, though, that I'm holding out a sliver of hope for Google+ becoming a federated platform.)
william42··on Microsoft has lost $9 billion on Bing
My guess is that Bing users tend to be less tech-savvy(default on Microsoft Windows and all that) and thus more likely to pay attention to ads.
william42··on Yahoo blocked emails about Wall Street protest
In general, the country with less of a constant trend towards mass censorship gets the benefit of the doubt. And for all the United States' faults, they have a significantly better censorship record than China.
william42··on How an arcane statistical law could have prevented the Greek disaster
Benford's Law is pretty well-known in mathy circles.
william42··on Google+ Opens to All
I thought Facebook's video chat was still only one-on-one, and frankly, multiplayer video chat was the only thing about Google+ that interests me.
william42··on 1/3200 chance someone will be hit by a satellite next week
Dead Like Me?
william42··on Don't Be So F*cking Strategic
I can't help but get a sense that the author is mythologizing and mystifying Apple. Is Apple really that unique?
william42··on Firefox Now Scores 100% on Acid3 Test
I thought the point of the Acid tests weren't to reflect reality but to encourage web developers to support useful but unsupported parts of the standards.
william42··on ZZüy – A Lesson In Perseverance
If he had stuck with BASIC, he might not have had the protocols he needed to write what he wanted.
william42··on Web Vi
Using vi keybindings in dvorak is an exercise in pain anyways...
william42··on Look out for No. 1
The problem is that revolutions tend to be more harmful than their predecessors: see China in the 60s, for example.
william42··on iOS is anti-Unix and anti-programmer
Photoshop doesn't have a scripting interface? I'm surprised.
william42··on iOS is anti-Unix and anti-programmer
> we have to acknowledge that programmer devices are increasingly going to be distinct from the mass market devices.

Actually, this creeps me out more than anything else, because where are we going to get new programmers? The prototypical childhood story of most of us is that of discovering a programming language on our computers and learning through experimentation. Will that be possible in an iPad world?

Though this brings me to an idea I've had for a while; a website where children can learn to program from their browser, since every modern browser has a JavaScript interpreter built in.
