willhackett··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (October 2023)
Blinq | Melbourne, Australia (On-site) | Senior Software Engineer, iOS, Android, Node or React

Blinq is the top-rated QR code business card app on the App Store and the Play Store. We're working on ways to make it easier to share your identity, keep it up to date and make it easier to stay on top of your contacts.

We're very hacky being a startup, which is lots of fun. All team members are salaried + equity.

Our stack: Swift (iOS), Kotlin (Android), React & Node (Web), CF Workers (Also, web)

willhackett··on WiFi without internet on a Southwest flight
I remember doing something similar on a flight until a flight attendant, very confused, asked me how I had all of the graphs from the flight deck on my laptop.

Was a funny conversation, especially giving Panasonic (who made the inflight flight tracker) exposes way more data on their API than I could get in the airline’s provided view.

willhackett··on iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus
Was that it?
willhackett··on Skiff – Privacy-first end-to-end encrypted email
I like this concept, it's not "open" source though. Apple peeps, it'd be lovely if you could make the Mail app more useful & prettier.
willhackett··on Open-source canvas drawing web app, built using React
This works really well, even on mobile safari. Nice work!
willhackett··on Sharing encrypted data over short-form mediums
I’m not sure if this will be any good, so I’m hoping to get some input.
willhackett··on NeetoCal, a calendly alternative, is a commodity and is priced accordingly
It might be worth mentioning that Fantastical now also has scheduling. It’s my preference because it handles a pending state until I approve.
willhackett··on Every time you click this link, it will send you to a random Web 1.0 website
I had a great IPT teacher in high school who open sourced his class plan on http://wonko.info.

Hit site was inspired by old mud games. It’s meant to be fun and educational.

There’s also some micro sites on there where he tried to win worst website awards.

willhackett··on Internet Archive expands Flash support
This is pure nostalgia
willhackett··on Show HN: Workout.lol – a web app to easily create a workout routine
This is fantastic! I'll be using this in the AM.
willhackett··on PoisonGPT: We hid a lobotomized LLM on Hugging Face to spread fake news
Plus, we mustn't forget this shining example: https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/jun/03/lawyer...

This is why I've found chat-style interfaces like Perplexity more comfortable to use in that they attribute their sources in the UI. It's not necessarily the source used to train the model, but it is the source that was evaluated to answer my query.

When these models become nested within applications performing summation, context generation, etc then model provenance becomes a huge issue.

I know it's optimistic, but I'd love to see provenance at query time.

willhackett··on ProtonMail Rewrites Your Emails
Only from the mail server to the receiving mail server.
willhackett··on ProtonMail Rewrites Your Emails
They have the opportunity to make PGP completely seamless.
willhackett··on ProtonMail Rewrites Your Emails
I'm still surprised Apple hasn't had a stab at making the PGP process seamless. I always imagined they'd generate keys on the device, sync via iCloud and publish public keys.

I was hoping their big song and dance over privacy would lead the likes of Gmail, Outlook, etc to adopt native PGP too.

Wishful thinking. :')

willhackett··on Show HN: Hacker News user blogroll
Live updating would be awesome. This could probably be done with a Cloudflare Worker, D1 (in Alpha, but still cool) and a Cron.

Remix.run is a brilliant framework for running React on Workers.

willhackett··on Ask HN: Could you share your personal blog here?
https://notes.willhackett.com

I don't post very often, but I've been meaning to because I find a great way to learn something is by writing about it.

willhackett··on Threads, an Instagram app
I'm not sure I'm actually going to use Threads. My Instagram and Twitter worlds are wildly different, and by using Instagram for login I'm reluctant to conflate the two.

This just seems like they want another vertical to vacuum user data and cram advertising.

I'm not against it, I'd just rather it was its own platform.

willhackett··on OCR at Edge on Cloudflare Constellation
This is the key reason we use Cloudflare.

I’m obsessed. Very keen to try PubSub next.

willhackett··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (July 2023)
Blinq | Melbourne, Australia | Principal Software Engineer | Full time | On-site

We're building a new way for people to share their identity.

More about us [here](https://blinq.me).

willhackett··on OCR at Edge on Cloudflare Constellation
I apologise, I probably could have been clearer. One key advantage is being able to improve the model without needing to re-release via the App Store/Play Store. Our app (Blinq) is also native so we'd need to prepare a model to natively run on both platforms.
willhackett··on Detecting and Handling Flaky Tests in Playwright
I really wanted to read this, but I think we may have hugged your site to death.
willhackett··on JMAP – a modern email open standard
You can possibly generate these filters on the server-side and serialize them for the client. I like the idea of only needing to store some pointers and metadata locally; that said I do prefer all my mail is available offline.
willhackett··on Google Introduces Passkey Authentication
I wonder if they'll update Chrome to support Keychain on Mac.
willhackett··on Apple passwords deserve an app
Not at all. Bring on the shared family iCloud Note. lol
willhackett··on Apple passwords deserve an app
I'm all for this, a better cross-platform Keychain app would be awesome.

To get my Credit Card details, I need to go Settings > Safari > AutoFill > Saved Credit Cards.

To get 2FA / Password details, I need to go Settings > Passwords.

In a lot of cases, they auto-fill without issue. But to manage these is a bit of a flimsy process.

willhackett··on Ask HN: Has anybody had luck making Webflow work behind Cloudflare?
A bit more context too. Webflow just makes it easy to update marketing content.

We have stuff on domain.etc/xxxxxxxxxx which is part of our application, everything else goes to the Webflow site which is our homepage.

Webflow forces you to use their hosting solution if you want to manage things like collections. There's sadly no way for us to just self-host the static content which would be preferred.

willhackett··on Ask HN: Has anybody had luck making Webflow work behind Cloudflare?
I'm leaning towards self-hosting on this occasion, but Webflow does this funny thing where it doesn't let you self-host collections (like Blog posts).
willhackett··on Ask HN: Has anybody had luck making Webflow work behind Cloudflare?
We do cache, but only for 10 mins.
willhackett··on Crazy Thin ‘Deep Insert’ ATM Skimmers
The only time I've used magnetic stripe in the last decade was in the US.
