whywhywhywhy··on Bill Gates tries to install MovieMaker (2003)
> I reboot every night

The fact he did is probably responsible for a lot of issues with Windows installing and problems. Normalizing a reboot as a common thing.

I also suspect the fact he keeps re-iterating that the download was fast is because the teams have been using slow internet as an excuse for code speed problems.

whywhywhywhy··on How Europe is killing makers and micro-entrepreneurs
Means nothing though because no European country can produce the goods an impoverished European can afford to pay for the goods so the local store is just the same Chinese goods shipped to that address other than your home address.
whywhywhywhy··on Tidal Cycles – Live coding music with Algorithmic patterns
Shortchanging it a bit when it moves it to the browser so less technical people can run it and moves it to a language significantly more people understand too.
whywhywhywhy··on The Lost Treasure of Sid Meier's Pirates
Yeah Worms was coded on Amiga computers in a part of the world that was extremely Amiga heavy so it’s unlikely Gorillas.bas is the reference point.
whywhywhywhy··on Pixel 11 Pro Fold feels like the end of an era
Look up the figures for inflation, your money is worth a fraction of what it was before COVID, then we have component shortages on top of that.
whywhywhywhy··on Pixel 11 Pro Fold feels like the end of an era
This article is extremely poorly written and has the assumption we all very deep in folding phone lore and can read the writers mind.

I think there's some new folding phone aspect ratio ("passport sized"?) that's more popular but the article never really explains which one they're talking about. Don't think it means moving away from folding in general.

whywhywhywhy··on Apple announces changes for apps in the European Union
> yes, though the level of headache is relatively minimal

Minimal if you're technical, completely incomprehensible if you're not. I mean I know when the OS says "this application is damaged and should be deleted" that it's lying and there is a terminal command for it, I can never remember it off the top of my head.

At least the right click open thing was something a normie could remember, but a non-technical person doesn't understand navigating a file structure and running a terminal command on a file with flags.

whywhywhywhy··on Deus Ex creator Warren Spector is retiring from game development
Kinda sad to me that a lot of the greats from those eras of gaming end up fizzling out on things they shouldn't really be working on and are not to their strengths because of industry ideas of the sorts of games that should be made today.

Like Molyneux's last games all being centered around trash exploitative mobile game mechanics.

Spector being the progenitor of 2 entire very rich single player genres with Thief and DeusEx it just feels completely the wrong person to be working on some coop online game that got support ended after 2 months. It's just not what a talent like him should be working on and the business mechanics don't align with his strengths.

Would have made a lot more sense to be doing a budget IMSIM, there is an audience there on PC for for these sort of games at a visual fidelity level a small team can accomplish rather than trying to make something more mainstream with a reliance on online.

whywhywhywhy··on How Bluesky draws its logo on screenshots
I get why it's the default but anyone who'd had to navigate an elderly relative around their banking app just via them describing the screen because iOS blanks it out when screen sharing definitely wishes there was a way to opt out of it.

Missed opportunity having this being a pro feature, having it free would have paid for itself in training data down the line.

whywhywhywhy··on I requested a copy of my data from McDonald’s loyalty program
A&W peaked at 2400 locations, Long John Silvers at 1080.

McDonalds is currently 46,000, 13k of those in the US alone. It's just not even comparable.

whywhywhywhy··on I requested a copy of my data from McDonald’s loyalty program
>“McDonald’s secret sauce is really commercial surveillance,”

Journo is search of a narrative that isn't there. McDonalds could stop tracking customers tomorrow and people would still be eating the same food there in 50 years.

The secret sauce is has more to do with actual sauce than anything claimed here.

whywhywhywhy··on AI is removing the middle class of software engineering?
Time lost when the real developers have to pick up the pieces and the viber has just moved on to the next shiny thing.
whywhywhywhy··on uBlock Origin Is Giving Up the Fight to Keep Ads Off Facebook
Swing as in the political term https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swing_(politics) because the team wouldn't be the right place in the management structure to alter the rest of the page other than the ad units.
whywhywhywhy··on Facebook ads are so hard to block that uBlock Origin stopped filtering them
Cost issues aside yeah image embedding tech is really good and can already do tasks like this, LLMs with native image understanding are even better at it.

Reasons this wouldn't work are you'd really need to get it to a good enough and small enough model to run low energy use and very fast to not impact browsing. The other issue is it'll be a fixed target for a period of time so the ads could be tweaked to find how to get them through it.

whywhywhywhy··on uBlock Origin Is Giving Up the Fight to Keep Ads Off Facebook
You're trying to stop ads because they're malicious but you think they'd be honest with their alt text?

Ignoring that users care deeply about images so a browser that did this would be considered broken from the get go.

whywhywhywhy··on uBlock Origin is giving up the fight to keep ads off Facebook
The approach they should have taken is to start whitelisting the components that are not ads.

Think of how the structure of Meta is gonna work, there's some team in charge of ads who has a sub team now in charge of messing with the ads to stop them being blocked.

If you start whitelisting everything that isn't an ad you move the problem into an area the team in charge of blocking the ads don't have control over.

Highly unlikely the team in charge of stopping ad blocking has swing to then start changing the code of every other element on the page to break your non-ad white listing.

whywhywhywhy··on AI is removing the middle class of software engineering?
>AI makes projects with weak engineering culture fail much faster.

>There used to be a time when people sat down and talked about how they'd do something. Now they can just prompt an agent for a few hours and open a PR.

>The most tragic aspect of this way of working is that, to the untrained eye, it works.

>If you pull the branch and test it, you'll probably get something somewhat functional. So what do they do? They keep going. Again and again. Until the project reaches a point where no one knows how anything works.

Isn't this the opposite of failing faster, it lets people who would have never made it past the first few hurdles and give up get deep in and then the false hope that they can then prompt their way out of whatever mess resulting in deeper and deeper spaghetti.

whywhywhywhy··on More than 10 firms pay up to $100k a month for access to Truth Social posts
If insider trading is your concern then the country hasn't been serious for a long time, everyone in government does it and it's never punished even when exploited to the levels of 9 figures of assets.

Should just be legalized at this point so we can all take advantage if they're all gonna get away with it.

whywhywhywhy··on H3-metal – Native MiniMax-H3 inference for Apple Silicon
It’s always been the case, it’s more the anomaly that LLMs work at comparable speeds on M series because almost all other ML runs way faster on Nvidia cards.
whywhywhywhy··on Every Company Needs a Cassandra
If you implemented something this insufferable people would at best just move all the discussion to private channels where this thing couldn't respond to it or at worst just stop providing input at all.

No one wants to be lectured by a clanker when they're just trying to banter.

whywhywhywhy··on App Store Rejection of the Week: Dark Hours
The concept of computers that for programs to run on them need to be submitted to a committee who decides if the users computer can run it or not felt like where the tides were going for a long time.

Post AI this starts to feel absurd and look if OpenAI release a hardware device with an App Store will the process be days to weeks of review or will it be vibe code it in 40 minutes hit publish and it’s available to every device in 2 minutes?

Yeah think software is thankfully going towards a world where bureaucracy isn’t respected.

The apple decides what the box or square in your hand can do era is over.

> because some teen in a garage has just solved this problem forever

Isn't really teens in garages perpetuating this is it though, its universities and companies milking government funding.

whywhywhywhy··on Not hiring junior engineers won't solve the problem you think you have
Wouldn't the logic to only hire Junior engineers if AI could do the work, what do you need the Senior salary for if they're both just asking AI to do things.

This is obviously assuming the ideology of an organization that would consider something like "We shouldn't be hiring engineers anymore" in the first place so they obviously have absolute trust in AI.
