whyage··on Ask HN: What are you reading?
Currently listening to I Am a Strange Loop by Douglas Hofstadter. A fascinating exploration of consciousness written 20 years ago but very relevant in the age of AI.
whyage··on In an $80 motel room, a discovery to shed light on the origins of life
I'm driving along Route 66 now, and $80 is about the average for a decent motel room.
whyage··on Starbase, LA
Are "3,000 new jobs" enough to make a dent though?
whyage··on To become a better writer, read as much as you can
Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance by Robert M. Pirsig, especially if you're into philosophical thinking. The way he blends it with a compelling narrative is masterful.
whyage··on In South Korea, some savour last season of legal dog meat
Absolutely right. Pigs, for example, are not less intelligent or affectionate than dogs.
whyage··on Google is making private AI practical with homomorphic encryption

whyage··on Beef and dairy drive 41% of biodiversity damage linked to global farmland
It's more than 6%. Cows eat a lot, so people cut forests to grow more feed (like in the Amazon). Deforestation contribute to global warming, not to mention the biodiversity damage.
whyage··on Beef and dairy drive 41% of biodiversity damage linked to global farmland
Do you vote? Why?
whyage··on Beef and dairy drive 41% of biodiversity damage linked to global farmland
Plenty of people (including me) are vegan, healthy, and happy. As omnivores above the poverty line, we can all make conscious and conscientious choices about what we eat. Going vegan is one of the most effective ways to combat global warming (if you're not in a position to donate large sums of money toward climate change research or mitigation).
whyage··on Publishers consider opting out of Google as search traffic declines
Do you have evidence for this?
whyage··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (July 2026)
Beautiful. Keep at it!
whyage··on German button maker searched rivers of American Midwest for valuable shells
Is the fact that he was of German descent material to how the events transpired? Not sure why it's even mentioned in the headline.
whyage··on Trump made more than $1B on crypto deals, part of 2025 windfall
I wonder if Democrats will have the courage to pursue justice to the fullest if/when they're back in power.
whyage··on Iran says it's closing Strait of Hormuz, accusing Israel, US of violating truce
It was astonishing to see the praise heaped on Trump by Israeli citizens and leaders, who believed he was their savior. I wonder if it's going to change now, not because he's giving up on them (which he seems to), but because they have nobody else left to rely on. Constant incoming ass kissing is effective when it comes to him, so their best strategy might be to keep going until he changes his mind again.
whyage··on Salesforce to Acquire Fin (formerly Intercom) for $3.6B
AWS has zero value because you can just buy a bunch of servers and rack them. And on and on.
whyage··on Pentagon raised threat of Israeli spying on U.S. to highest level, sources say
> The US is neither a vassal of Israel nor simply doing its bidding.

This is propaganda as well, only more agreeable to you.

whyage··on How LLMs work
Style nit: the transitions between dark-mode text and large diagrams with a snow white background are jarring.
whyage··on Internet traffic in Iran increasing
You might be right; most of the traffic is bot-driven
whyage··on 100 Best Novels of All Time
I beg to differ. Bob Dylan's poetry impacted me much more. He totally deserved the prize.
whyage··on The Vatican's Website in Latin
Professor Dave Explains has a great series for those interested in learning Latin: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLybg94GvOJ9EcIVsQMJOj...
whyage··on Can you stop beans from making you gassy?
As a vegan who consumes plenty of legumes, I researched the topic and found this useful patent: https://patentimages.storage.googleapis.com/88/c7/d6/daddb53...

I boiled it down to the following steps (pun intended): 1. Rinse the beans. 2. Soak for several hours in room-temperature water, replacing the water 2-3 times. 3. Soak for several hours in ~130°F water, replacing the water 2-3 times (I use Yogurt mode on my Instant Pot, as it lets you set a temperature and hold it for hours). 4. Cook'em as you normally would.

Cooked beans freeze well, so I usually make large batches and freeze them in Ziplock bags for later use.

whyage··on Iran attack wipes out 17% of Qatar's LNG capacity for up to five years
I wonder what the overall effect of this war will be on global warming. If you put together the awful pollution caused by the battle itself and the reduced oil and gas production that follows, it could be a net benefit. Sure, it's a sarcastic pov, but I'm trying to cling to the positive here so be nice.
whyage··on Google closes deal to acquire Wiz
What's wrong with the name Wiz?
whyage··on Iran's Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is killed in Israeli strike, ending 36-year rule
Oh, so the Iranian government didn't shoot its own citizens en masse? It's just Zionist propaganda? Interesting
whyage··on Iran's Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is killed in Israeli strike, ending 36-year rule
So Israel is at fault of the Iranian government slaughtering 30,000 of its citizens just last month?
whyage··on Claude becomes number one app on the U.S. App Store
Why is Dick's Sporting Goods in the top 3?
whyage··on Show HN: Holy Mess – Israeli–Palestinian conflict from an atheist angle
OP here. I'd appreciate feedback on the book I posted about, if anyone feels like reading or skimming through it.
whyage··on Iran Protest Death Toll Could Top 30k, According to Local Health Officials
It doesn't erase Israel's genocide, but the question is still valid: why don't these crimes against Iran's own citizens evoke international outrage?
whyage··on Kilauea erupts, destroying webcam [video]
Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park is absolutely stunning (and safe, away from the closed area). It's like being on a different planet. If you haven't been to the Big Island and the park, you should add it to your bucket list.
whyage··on University of the People Is the First TuitionFree American-Accredited Online Uni
Answering my own question (should have checked first): they have exam fees if you want to get a credit.
