whosbein··on Writing a fuzzy receipt parser in Python
Rough summary: I generated best fit lines from the alignment of the letters. You know the lines on the receipt consist of straight-aligned letters, so you can calculate lines based on that. I then calculated the average slope of all those lines and then used that average to base the rotation calculation on.

Ha, cool, didn't know about textcleaner either. Always fun when you write some huge routine to do something that you later find out is a simple command elsewhere. Thanks!

This is really cool, nice work! I tinkered with the same thing a while ago. Sadly, that project has been neglected. One thing I was most proud of was developing a way to automatically rotate the receipt image to the most ideal position to better help the OCR. I would notice decent improvements even with a few degrees difference.

Question: have you thought about any better methods for getting the receipts scanned? A big hurdle for me was the time it took to scan everything. I know there are scanners designed for such a thing, and you seem to have used one, but were you satisfied with it?

And thanks for the get_close_matches() hint! I'll try and remember that if I ever start hacking again on this.

Is there something similar to this for making server infrastructure maps? Just something where one can define db, web, network device, whatever, and then make a layout diagram with maybe name and IP address thrown in there?

And apologies for another "is there something like this for X" comment!

whosbein··on Show HN: Star Trek DS9 Episodes Worth Watching
Thanks! I was looking for a new show to binge-watch on Netflix.

I wanted to point out that (after just now checking) Netflix isn't consistent with their two-part show listings as they relate to Netflix's episode number. For example, the two-parter of S01E01-02 and S04E01-02 are listed as one episode on Netflix. S02E20-21 are listed as two separate episodes. It gets out of sync with the guide. Not a huge deal, just need to make sure to pay attention to episode title as opposed to episode number.

Unless I missed something, I believe they're all ping-pong balls which are listed at 40mm in diameter.
