whoiskevin··on Are interruptions worse for programmers than for other knowledge workers?
> I find the best thing is this new instant messenger trend... not because I like being pestered but because I can turn off the notifications and then go and check it when i'm done on my current chunk of thinking.

you mean email? :-p

whoiskevin··on Harley Davidson’s EV debut could electrify the motorcycle industry
What makes me laugh is the silent burst from 0 to 60 of my Zero while your still waiting for the first roar. Snarky aside are you in it for the acceleration? If you are the electric is something you might want to try.
whoiskevin··on China builds ‘world’s biggest air purifier’ and it seems to be working
I couldn’t help but think of the book “The Water Knife”. In the book it is the the Chinese that build massive liveable spaces that recycle the water and purify the air. Just a small step in that direction.
whoiskevin··on How to build a wireless street lighting system
everything comes back around. i worked in a startup in 2002 and we developed a mesh network street light controller. https://web.archive.org/web/20020605214609/http://www.telemi...
whoiskevin··on Don’t ruin streaming by turning it into cable
Humans can't multitask regardless of their generation
whoiskevin··on Annual note to self: most of the world exists outside the tech bubble
Same here despite listing that I was willing to relocate on my own dime. Then I relocated took a job at Apple and every big name wanted to interview me. Got job offers at two other big tech names while I was in CA. until I worked in the valley I apparently wasn't smart enough despite 20 plus years experience outside CA. there is a bias. it is real and speaks badly of the valley.
whoiskevin··on Macaron: a high productive and modular web framework in Go
Well I wasn't commenting on age of particular projects. I had not heard of Beego so now I still feel there is a bit of over growth. Leads to confusion over what to use when you do want better routing which I think is pretty much every project. Perhaps routing will continue to improve in the standard library such that it does not feel like I need to pick a package or roll my own.
whoiskevin··on Macaron: a high productive and modular web framework in Go
Starting to feel like Go is suffering from a glut of web frameworks.
whoiskevin··on GitLab’s Secret to Managing Employees in 160 Locations: Write Everything Down
I have to watch a video that then tells me to write everything down? Sorry I couldn't resist. I believe and practice that as much as I can because it makes things easier regardless.
whoiskevin··on Trump Is Right: Silicon Valley Using H-1B Visas to Pay Low Wages to Immigrants
Honestly he is not evil but he is unstable and childish. We should not normalize anything he says. It is dangerous to allow hime to be normalized. He is not normal and a POTUS that spends time on his old reality TV show, lying about illegal voting, etc. is not acceptable.
whoiskevin··on Trump Is Right: Silicon Valley Using H-1B Visas to Pay Low Wages to Immigrants
Again a few examples that are often used to justify calling 7 million people lazy. If the visas are being used for for cash register and pumping gas jobs (how many states pump gas for you?) then this might make some sense but these are just isolated events and fit a narrative convenient to corporations to justify many practices that are mainly beneficial to the corporation.
whoiskevin··on Russian government hackers do not appear to have targeted Vermont utility
"puppets of the Democratic Party"

Please that is the problem here. Constant looking for sides and making false statements while pretending to be the "one" that knows the truth in comments.

whoiskevin··on Smartwatches Are Dying Because They Are Worthless
The Apple Pay is fantastic when you are on a motorcycle and pull up to the pump. Quick responses to texts and heart rate tracking making a smart watch a pretty good but yes expensive gadget. So many will find it useless but many find a lot of extra features on smart phones useless as well.
whoiskevin··on Amazon has made its first drone delivery to an actual customer
I noticed it didn't deliver a holiday fruit cake. Probably due to the weight limit. Logistics will get better but without some weight increase this is going to be a long way off from useful.
whoiskevin··on Ask HN: Why don't companies hire programmers for fewer hours per day?
Well that is the worst place ever to work.
whoiskevin··on Hacker News' “Who is Hiring?” thread, part 2, remote and locations
Water? Nation has natural resources. Valley does not.
whoiskevin··on Sergey Brin: Come to Silicon Valley to scale a business, but not to start one
Yes because we all want to relive the glory days of being a poor student. Will the tradeoff include a divorce and place to stay for the kids?
whoiskevin··on Apple R&D Reveals a Pivot Is Coming
But still loses money
whoiskevin··on Please don’t learn to code
Yes they are trying to create more cheap labor and yes they are trying to eliminate well paying programming jobs. This has been the goal of business from the start not just for programming. I would love to see more cheap labor domestically. I'm tired of work being shipped offshore to come back broken and barely functional simply because it is cheaper. At least maybe we could ship it around the country. Business will continue to try and assembly line all processes including programming. I've had to learn to live with that and I think we all will have to as well.
whoiskevin··on Firms that paid for Clinton speeches have US government interests
We have an opportunity to elect the first women as President of the United States I hope we aren't going to pick on small things and ignore that opportunity. Unless she is proven to be any different than any previous President your choices are elect the first women as President or Trump. You decide.
whoiskevin··on A smart plug to monitor your router and automatically reset power if WiFi fails
And if the modem is not available?
whoiskevin··on High Salaries Haunt Some Job Hunters
So now I just flat out say what my jump-number is. Any answer other than "yeah, we can work with that" is a reason to end the conversation and save everybody's time.

Can't upvote that enough! I've been doing this for years. I don't have time to waste and if they won't talk the numbers there is no point in having the conversation. Statements like "we are competitive" or my other favorite "can you send us proof of your current salary" are hilarious. The proof is my favorite. What is the point of that? If I won't talk to you for less than x dollars there is no value in proving what I currently make.

whoiskevin··on Can a $9 Computer Spark a New Wave of Tinkering and Innovation?
I agree. Maybe it should read "unlike Apple, Microsoft, Samsung, X, Y, Z, CHIP has both open-source software..."
whoiskevin··on Can a $9 Computer Spark a New Wave of Tinkering and Innovation?
I think you are missing the entire picture. I have to agree that it is not a big enough cost difference because if you go spend the $9 and then try and use it without $100 more in equipment or already existing computer you will be disappointed. So it simply is not going to spur that much more interest.
whoiskevin··on I went to join Isis in Syria, taking my four-year-old.It was a journey into hell
"But let's not assume we are knights in shining armour either."

That wasn't implied

whoiskevin··on Economic Inequality
"I am also weirded out by the "hunter" metaphor. The people fighting income inequality are not predators out to get pg's billions, they are working class people who can't afford healthcare or to send their kids to college."

+1 on that alone. I was concerned that this was completely misunderstanding those that understand the income inequality issue.

whoiskevin··on Economic Inequality
If that were all that happened it would be great. But automation leaves a lot of people off the payrolls without jobs and if those jobs are paying less then less expensive food is not less expensive. And incomes have dropped more than inflation in most cases for the poor which means it is not cheaper for those less able to afford it. Complicated problems are not whisked away with making things less expensive = benefit everyone.
whoiskevin··on How I made my own Amazon Dash button
Wonder when Amazon will just make this easier for everyone. They already have if it just moves out of beta: https://aws.amazon.com/iot/button/
whoiskevin··on Soundproofing for New York Noise
And yet everyone wonders why many choose to commute and not live in a crowded city or next to a freeway. The Bay Area is extremely noisy with most housing near major transit. Definitely a growing market for abatement services.
whoiskevin··on U.S. states pass laws backing Uber's view of drivers as contractors
Exactly. "At one point, Uber sent five representatives to a meeting with members of the insurance industry to negotiate language in the bill"

Just makes you feel warm and fuzzy doesn't it?
