whizzkid··on EU approves internet copyright law, including ‘link tax’ and ‘upload filter’
> However, if this law is upheld in court, then I think we can consider the EU a failed experiment

What an unexpected conclusion you are jumping into. I think EU is the only capable authority in the world so far who is not afraid to challenge big corporations in favour of people. (mobile charges, customer rights, Google, Intel, Telefonica, etc..)

I completely agree that there are big problems around EU when it comes to lobbyists around Brussels. In my personal opinion they should be banned from influencing EU decisions. But, just because there is an issue with the car, does not mean that we need to burn the car completely. Better option is to help fixing the car.

whizzkid··on EU copyright law proposal rejected
I think that current implementations of update filters are not ready and satisfactory to make internet a better place, thus I am glad that it is rejected for now.

When youtube content id matches 10 seconds of black screen as a copyrighted material, it shows that these systems are nowhere near production ready.

I am all for fair use and credits when it comes to creators getting paid for what they deserve but, when you need couple of lawyers to dispute something as a student on internet against enterprises, then freedom and equality of Internet disappears.

whizzkid··on Firefox Private Browsing vs. Chrome Incognito: Which Is Faster?
I really want Firefox Quantum to be at least as good as Chrome. But when I tried watching some HTML5 videos, it started using a significant amount of CPU on my Mac and it did not stop.

My experience for 3 major browsers on MacOS as follows:

- If you want noticeably longer battery life when on the travel.

1- Safari

2- Chrome/Firefox

- If you want seamless browsing experience.

1- Chrome

2- Firefox

3- Safari

whizzkid··on The iPhone X UX is a nightmare
I had a chance to play with an iPhone X and it was not really a disaster. Swiping up from the bottom worked without any problem. But it is little too big to my taste. You can not really use it with one hand. But this changes person to person.

I am guessing that Apple is investing and working hard on new technologies and tried to fit some of these new things to iPhone X. This is like a transition version to new devices that we may see in the future.

When Steve was the boss, Apple's main priority was iPhone. But this has changed over the years. iPhone became the best phone as intended and now is the time to work on new things. Like all other phone companies, Apple also needs to release a new model every year to keep those money flowing into company. My advise would be that you buy the model that you need, but know that new things will be coming at much faster pace than ever.

whizzkid··on Why I Still Use Vim
Little bit off topic but if you are afraid of opening large files on Mac OS, try Hex Fiend. It will open for example a 6GB database dump in mili-seconds (no joke) and it will let you search anything in it without you waiting.

I just tested the memory usage with that 6GB dump file and it only requires 21MB to open that file.

I discovered this program while checking who is behind my favorite shell (Fish Shell) :)

whizzkid··on Sperm Count in Western Men Has Dropped Over 50 Percent Since 1973, Paper Finds
Not sure if it helps though. It has been so long since they have experienced a tough life, levels may already gone back to same levels as others.
whizzkid··on Sperm Count in Western Men Has Dropped Over 50 Percent Since 1973, Paper Finds
My theory goes like this;

> In the recently released research, no significant decline in sperm quality was seen in men from non-Western countries, but this segment made up only about a quarter of the results.

There is something in developed countries that the male do not experience during his lifetime. It can be lack of fear, adrenalin, less activity, or something else. I think statistics hold up with the historic wars as well. As WW2 ends and people starts living without any fear of life, male sperm quality drops.

I think it is about what male experiences and which hormons are triggered in his lifetime.

whizzkid··on How paywalled sites permit access to visitors from social media sites and apps
While I think these kind of posts are really fun to read, they should also mention little bit more about why these are paywalled. People needs to understand that traditional newspaper is dying and in order to support real journalists, they need to make money. I am neither working for any news organisation nor talking about a specific news outlet.

As far as I can see, they are trying hard not to annoy people but at the same time try to make some money for their work.

whizzkid··on Going Mobile With React Native
I see, thanks for getting into details.

I guess, if you are one-man team RN makes good sense since you don't have time to write native for 2 platforms from the beginning. If your app takes off, then switch to native for scaling. Is it possible to partly switch from RN to native? something like convert components one by one to native components, while still running RN for some parts?

whizzkid··on Going Mobile With React Native
https://facebook.github.io/react-native/showcase.html

I use some of the apps that are listed above, and I don't really have a problem with the performance.

Can you explain little bit more on how not using the native components can be big problem when your app gets bigger? I am asking because i really consider using React Native.

Or maybe give an example under which circumstances will those app fail to perform?

I used Cordova and the "lag" makes it clear from the first 5 seconds that it is not a native app. But i haven't experienced it from the apps that they listed on their page.

whizzkid··on Is the keyboard faster than the mouse?
One important area on where keyboard gets an unknown advantage is the muscle memory.

Using mouse will require attention from your hand and eye both at the same time. On keyboard, you can let your fingers work while resting your eyes.

whizzkid··on A Norwegian who knew his tortoises so well that he changed history

This is such a beautiful ending to the article.

I think we are experiencing a whole new world right now, where anyone can be almost anywhere by the help of technology. This will of course be discussed in the future who knows how.

Give yourself a day or two every month without computer or mobile phones, code editors, or programming discussions.

Enjoy the life, discover things, spend more time with family.

whizzkid··on RIP Turkey, 1921 – 2017
I think it is important to note that voting resulted in Yes by %51-%48 which is so close.

3 biggest cities in Turkey voted for No. These 3 cities are having the most educated people. As long as people get more educated and it easier for them to reach for knowledge, it is going to get better for Turkey.

whizzkid··on Gmail Add-ons
Pretty often at work actually, yes.
whizzkid··on Gmail Add-ons
Absolutely. I am not saying that these add-ons can not be useful. In fact there are a lot of ideas one can come up with.

I just think external email integrations are hard to keep healthy and active.

whizzkid··on Gmail Add-ons
Sorry to be the one that has negative feelings about it.

Email is one of those rare concepts that is really hard to change or enhance. I can easily see Google abandoning this feature in 5 years.

People need email service just because of the email function, nothing more than that.

It's concept clearly has some limitations (attachment sizes, layout inconsistencies and so on) but it also doesn't have any deal-breaker problems.

Introducing external services integration to email sounds like taking a huge risk. How people manage their invoices, to-do lists and other stuff is changing faster than ever. These add-ons will require active development all the time to keep themselves up-to-date.

As a developer, I wouldn't risk investing in this feature.

whizzkid··on Video Games Are Changing the Way Soccer Is Played
It is not really hard for EA to make more realistic football(soccer) game. The problem is, probably around 15% of the all FIFA gamers will enjoy the real experience while the rest will find it so difficult to play.

Their considerable amount of revenue comes from kids who loves to shoot, dribble, and do some skills without thinking about physical reality side of it.

whizzkid··on Apple Has Removed Dash from the App Store
Even though It might be a simple error on Apple's end, this is both morally and economically unacceptable. As long as it is not a top-high critical issue with the account or the application, a considerable time should be given to developer to solve the issue.

They can even freeze the money that goes to developer until the issue resolved, but cutting the app from the market and failing on both app users and the developer?

I don't think this is the best approach.

whizzkid··on Amazon flipped a default and made me thousands of dollars
Here are my 2 cents about the pricing page you have @jasonkester

"Cheap Bastard Plan" is both little too much slang, and unpleasant to look at if you are in a demo to show this service to upper management.

I am not saying that you should have a boring, enterprisey pricing page with formal words, in fact I really like what you did there with free plan. Just saying that you can rephrase it with little more easy-going words. :)

Great product, congrats!

whizzkid··on Rebase and merge pull requests
> Just because the commits are fine as part of a branch doesn't mean you want to keep them as part of mainline.

Can you elaborate on this? I would be happy to learn more about it.

whizzkid··on Rebase and merge pull requests
I personally think that commit history should be kept as long as it makes sense. But in some cases, you don't want to keep some of the commit messages if they don't add anything to development flow.

For example,

- Force SSL flag when connecting to server

- Use new syntax for SSL flag

- Wrap flag implementation to its own method

- Add forgotten tests

This branch's main goal was to use ssl flag on external requests but ended up having several commits that does not really matter to other developers. Then you want to squash this branch into a commit and merge.

Rebase and merge example,

- Improve sorting by adding cache

- Implement a separate config class to fetch caching times.

- Modify search implementation to use cache config class

These are rather important commits by themselves and better keep them separated in your history.

whizzkid··on The Verge editor secretly joins Apple, doesn't inform the Verge
There is something fishy in this whole story.

- You wouldn't risk your new position by not quitting your old one.

- Apple would not want you to keep your old job since they want your focus on your new position.

- Getting double salaries is not worth the paperwork headache of tricking the system.

The only reason I can think of is, he would get some sort of extra pay from his old job if he would fulfil a time written on his old contract.

whizzkid··on Say hello to Google Allo: a smarter messaging app
I think Google lately spending too much time in the Silicon Valley bubble and less time in the real world. Solutions they are coming up with have so little value outside the small bubble. WhatsApp solved a real world problem without being fancy or trying to do too much.

It kept it simple, efficient and treated everyone equal in its ecosystem.

I don't think Facebook will try to change WhatsApp. They are mostly interested in WhatsApp's user base. But even if they ruin it, success stories will not change. The next big thing will come from people that have similar mindsets like the ones created WhatsApp.

whizzkid··on Say hello to Google Allo: a smarter messaging app
As long as they(Google) don't study why WhatsApp is the most popular messaging app, I don't think they will ever dominate this market. Here are the most important 2 things in my opinion that made whatsapp #1 messaging app.

- WhatsApp tried to reach everyone from the beginning. Founders knew that not everyone in world has enough money to buy a shiny phone every year.

- WhatsApp uses minimal bytes possible to send your messages to other side. This will be the only choice for people who have expensive data plans all over the world, and those who are travelling often and roaming enabled.

I am not even sure if my 4 years old android phone will be able to install the app. So will this app have a great success? I don't think so.

whizzkid··on 4 a.m. Is the Most Productive Hour
No no no my friend. You are paying your employees to work under the employment agreement that you both signed.

> I am paying you to be productive so that with the collective production of the employees, the company can outmaneuver the competition

Your employees may be so productive on a project that has no future which at the end will not help the company at all. It is you who should steer the ship for competition. I think you are confusing being a lazy employee with what he/she is saying.
