Yes, they did. The fine was a lot less than they profited from planned obsolescence.

Remember you are not an AI. You are a human, so it takes you significantly more time to read a response and produce another query. 25 messages every 3 hours is a lot when you're doing what parent described. When I'm programming, I also do other things too. 3 hours goes by fast.
whitemary··on There is no A.I.
> The elephant in the room in these discussions of AI is the concept of the corporation

*the concept of capitalism

whitemary··on Ban on Tenure for New Faculty Hires Passes Texas Senate
That is the real question.
whitemary··on AI is upending the freelance world
> a similar, generic, "college essay" feel to it

I worked for a large periodical publishing corp throughout my 20s. This + quick turnaround is exactly what the publishing staff (ad sales) fought for, because it was safe. Only the edit staff (writers, etc.) wanted anything else, and those who really wanted it left.

> this would make their universities vastly less attractive to various incoming faculty

...but given the flood state of the academic labor market, still rather attractive.

This is why the Chinese pity western "democracy," and it's quite easy to see where they're coming from. Of course, it's well established that the US is merely an oligarchy with a massive domestic propaganda operation.
whitemary··on Tech bosses are letting dictators censor what Americans see
Bosses are dictators.
whitemary··on TikTok’s algorithm keeps pushing suicide to vulnerable kids
The term for this is "neoliberal." Classical liberalism birthed the Gilded Age and the series of economic failures that gave rise to communism and WW2. Neoliberalism encompasses a series of ongoing experiments with micromanaging economic tendencies. It will most likely die an even worse death than classical liberalism.
whitemary··on TikTok’s algorithm keeps pushing suicide to vulnerable kids
> Almost every political party in western democracies are “liberal” in the classical sense.

Wrong. They are neoliberal, not classically liberal.

Classical liberalism (belief in naturalistic free market economics) failed in the 20th century and neoliberalism took its place, characterized by top-down micromanagement of economic ecosystem.

In other words, classical liberalism insists markets will thrive only when left to their own devices. Neoliberalism insists markets will thrive only when managed by competent administrators (see Federal Reserve).

whitemary··on TikTok’s algorithm keeps pushing suicide to vulnerable kids
Liberalism is just authoritarianism with a lot of competing authorities. My American workplace is 100% authoritarian.
whitemary··on TikTok’s algorithm keeps pushing suicide to vulnerable kids
This is perfectly compatible with parent's theory.
whitemary··on Almost three quarters of the golden age of Hollywood has been lost
This is what capitalism would have happen to the bulk of culture.

That's an oxymoron.

You aren't going to like this, but it turns out the US doesn't reliably enforce anything in its constitution, and even contradicts it on a constant basis. Effectively, the US is governed by an aggregate of very wealthy corporations who get what they want by bartering with politicians.
whitemary··on Street Votes: A proposed response to Ireland's housing crisis
It's because the Soviet Union defeated the Nazis, resulting in very strong communist influence during the reconstruction era.
whitemary··on Street Votes: A proposed response to Ireland's housing crisis
Nowhere has a "YIMBY party" haha. YIMBY types are literally just profit-seeking developers.

> The left shrieks about "evil developers" and "affordable housing" and opposes new market-rate building.

See...there you are. The opposition is the YIMBY types.

whitemary··on Software firms across US facing tax bills that threaten survival
Precisely. The difference with software is that the production process is so iterative that experimentation becomes a relatively rational tactic for getting things done.
whitemary··on Software firms across US facing tax bills that threaten survival
Announcement: New Product v2.0 Features Less Bugs!!!
whitemary··on Software firms across US facing tax bills that threaten survival
"New product" is a distinction without a difference. Literally all software development efforts are in the interest of "new products" depending on your definition of "new product."
whitemary··on The Battle over Techno’s Origins
I pretty much agree with you, but I do think the ostensible conflict has been important for culture-keeping purposes in various scenes.

The particular character of music genres shifts over time because the primary function of genres is not consistency but rather a superficial purity that temporarily preserves the scenes in which culture is incubated.

whitemary··on The Military-Industrial Stock Buyback Complex

whitemary··on CA Electric Bills on Income
I agree. Utilities should all be publicly owned, which would reduce costs to everyone without the pathetic means testing.
whitemary··on The Military-Industrial Stock Buyback Complex
That is an extreme underestimate.

As Karl Marx illustrated 150 years ago, a state under capitalism is a capitalist state.
