whitebread··on Nobody designs for small iPhone devices anymore
Same here, my iPhone SE (2016) is still going strong and I can't remember the last time I stumbled upon an app that gave me enough sizing issues to become frustrating. What I would've given for the 2020 SE to be the same size as the 2016, being able to do everything on my phone one-handed is such a nice perk.
whitebread··on Calling for public input on our approach to world leaders
At this point it feels like the best option is to shut twitter down completely. What good comes solely from twitter?

whitebread··on Trump signs executive order targeting Twitter after fact-checking row
Isn’t the problem that the tweets are factually incorrect? I don’t think it has anything to do with offensiveness in this case.
whitebread··on Government to urge us all to walk and cycle more
Your assumptions are ugly. There is no possible way for me to know an Audi 6 cylinder (relevant because quiet and fast) is going to come flying around a blind corner when there are huge red stop lights all around it. The only reason I didn't die was because I always am watching the street for cars that aren't paying attention.

Stop comparing to other countries. The usa (especially the south) actively legislates to keep car as king. All of those resources you speak of don't go towards this country's public transportation or self transportation options. Bike lanes are a joke in most big cities. I've watched cars actively try to mess with bikers, run them off the road and such. I won't try to guess their motives. You are naive.

whitebread··on Government to urge us all to walk and cycle more
Not wanting to die is privileged? I walked to work pre-coronavirus, and had been nearly run over on 3 separate occasions. Jumping out of the way, hands on the hood level nearly. Yes, the walk sign was on. I was constantly breathing in pollution from construction and old vehicles/diesel/huge trucks. I live in a major metropolitan city in the southern usa. It was not a pleasant experience.
whitebread··on Career advice for people with bad luck
What is this greater goal you speak of?
whitebread··on Don't Mess with Texas
Dallasite here. While the marketing campaign was very catchy, it has fallen on hard times. Take a walk or drive through Dallas, and you’ll quickly become crestfallen with the amount of litter constantly flowing with the breeze. It’s a disgrace.
whitebread··on New iPhone SE
Feels a step too far to assume for most people. I agree with other commenters that the new phone is too big and left wanting due to no headphone jack
whitebread··on Digital surveillance technologies to fight pandemic must respect human rights
Sadly not holding my breath for this to happen in America. After they tracked those spring breaker cell phones with ease, I’m afraid human rights are already being trampled.
whitebread··on How coronavirus infected my brain: anxiety, the internet, and keeping up to date
I appreciate the sentiments, but I'm in a line of work where we have to track billable hours. Similar to how lawyers have to do it. I have clearly defined my boundaries, and have none of the problems you have described. Really my main problem is that my higher ups are clearly not taking this seriously and are expecting people to put in the same amount of work pre-crisis. I'm thinking that is probably what a lot of my peers are going through too.
whitebread··on How coronavirus infected my brain: anxiety, the internet, and keeping up to date
How are you finding time to do all of this around work? I and many WFH people I know are working more than they were pre-corona, unfortunately.
whitebread··on Additional 6.6M File for Initial Unemployment Benefits [pdf]
This sounds like an unfortunate domino effect, where our legislation forces the unemployed to jump through ridiculous hoops, and in desperation to get $$ they start passing out resumes like hotcakes. To me they are a symptom of a broken system, and I want to direct my ire at the government rather than them.
whitebread··on Abandoned stores, empty homes: why San Francisco's boom looks like a crisis
The author personifies capital earlier in the piece when he writes “noncommittal capitalism.” The way he structures the last sentence does seem to point towards the idea that the capital in SF is homeless.

Remember when the government told us that low-fat was the way to go?
whitebread··on Grocery Industry Confronts a Problem: Only 10% of Americans Love Cooking (2017)
Nah. Insane is a really heavy word to use here. Everyone is different. And 60 is really low, insane even, for the average sized human regardless.
whitebread··on Grocery Industry Confronts a Problem: Only 10% of Americans Love Cooking (2017)
No food is good or bad, it’s just food. Dose makes the poison, yada yada. Please stop moralizing food choices. Is butter a calorie heavy food that is being overused in restaurants, leading to overeating? I’d say yes. Does that make butter “bad?” I’d say no, still just a food item. It’s amoral. Sodium is an even trickier thing, as overeating isn’t really a calorie thing but can have other adverse impacts.
whitebread··on Busyness leads to bad decisions
Not every American feels like it isn’t okay to be idle and bored. I guess you haven’t been following the real noise about moving to a four day workweek in America. Can we leave the sweeping, judgmental comments on the drawing room floor?
whitebread··on Life expectancy in the U.S. is declining for middle-aged people of all groups
While this comment could have been more tactfully written, I believe the substance has merit. These drugs are classified as “preventative” [1] when they are treating symptoms rather than diseases. We can at least consider the source.

whitebread··on The rise of solar is ‘jeopardising the grid’ and it's a lesson for Australia
While that may or may not be true, I’d say it is true that the powers that be for most countries are in bed with one or more industries comparatively to Australia and the coal industry.
whitebread··on Valve confirm Half-Life: Alyx, a VR game being revealed on Thursday
I don’t have VR and will be buying a rig for this game and will be willing to rearrange the furniture in my 624 sqft apt to do it.

Born in 1992, HL1 was what really got me into gaming.

whitebread··on Some users say they're getting rid of Fitbit because they don't trust Google
I’ve had the same experience. I left Fitbit for Garmin early 2015 and switched back to Fitbit early 2017. Garmin has better overall health tracking but the app user experience is (was?) woefully lacking. I enjoyed and enjoy the Fitbit app and its 90% of the reason I went back.

However I am one of the ones trying to de-Google, so I’ll see how a data dump goes. Trying to find a device that toes the line between health tracker and smart watch as artfully as the Versa 1 does that isn’t produced by a monster Corp should be fun as well

whitebread··on A Startup Trying to Help Car Dealers Weather Hailstorms
I can see where relying on a black box could get really hairy though. What if it’s a light storm that produces virtually no damage but the device produces a payout? What if the exact opposite happened? Who is programming and vetting the code?
whitebread··on In Praise of the 5-Hour Workday and Other ‘Radical’ Ideas
This feels like a flippant, uninformed comment. When you don’t eat those for a 2-3 day window your body ramps up energy production through stored fat. So I’d say you still have energy.
whitebread··on Alphabet in bid to buy Fitbit
The Ionic was a misstep, but damning the entire brand because of one bad product feels like painting with too broad a brush. Like another user said, I love my Versa. Liked but didn't love the Blaze when I had that. I'll be searching for a wearable from a different company that is comparable to the Versa if this deal goes through.
whitebread··on NBA's China dilemma: $4B at risk as Chinese TV cancels game broadcasts
Can we relax with the self-made, altruistic view of billionaires? Self-made is a myth, and an NBA owner just released a book titled "Shut Up and Listen." Money talks, and it seems pretty clear that all of the moves previously made were actually for profits, not social causes.
whitebread··on We are clueless about how long things should take
I have been having the exact same thoughts, except at a public accounting firm. A lot of the comments here describe what is typical in public accounting as well. It seems the moral of the story is that managerialism is hard to make work. Perhaps we should try something else?
