whearyou··on How France Changed the Tides of the American Revolution (2018)
Not a siege in any sense. What sieges not only allow the besieged to conduct import/export but actively pay for the besieged’s supplies?

Leave the ideology somewhere else

whearyou··on Ask HN: Has anyone here turned around their life in their 40s?
Hey man lots of courage to ask for help- as others have said a therapist will be a huge resource.

Things are far from over yet and I and most on this thread are rooting for you.

whearyou··on Inventor of the world wide web wants us to reclaim our data from tech giants
Well said, one question is what’s a realistic way to fold in the legal/regulatory dimension given we’re talking with technologists and not lawyers.

I wonder if there any historical parallels to inform us, and what would that look like here?

whearyou··on Infinite patterns appear in numbers described as moving systems
Can someone explain this for the cretins in the room?
whearyou··on Europe accuses US of profiting from war
Sounds about right
whearyou··on Tell HN: A hacker's life is in danger, your awareness may be life saving
What about the part where they purged and executed every one of their allies - socialists, liberals, even opposing cliques in their own theocracy - after the overthrew the Shah?
whearyou··on When Silicon Valley Owns the American Dream
The 21st century version of tenant farmers or serfs.

Super dystopic

whearyou··on Why are nuclear power construction costs so high? Part III – the nuclear navy
Fail safe means that in a catastrophic failure of the reactor’s regulatory systems it stops functioning rather than overloads. Entropy trends it to not working rather than working too much - for example a gas furnace will stop burning if the systems running the furnace stop working and are unable to provide more gas to the burn chamber.

Is that how Navy reactors work?

whearyou··on America’s Throwaway Spies: How the CIA Failed Iranian Informants
The US is unlikely to continue being able to recruit high value assets if those assets do not have some confidence they will be taken care of.

This sounds more short term thinking on particular individuals in the CIA than anything else

whearyou··on Why are nuclear power construction costs so high? Part III – the nuclear navy
Until fail-safe fission technology is ready (unlike fail deadly technology which all current and planned systems currently are) nuclear power seems to me a sophisticated example of cutting off your nose to spite your face
whearyou··on Why are there so few economies of scale in construction? Part I
Is there an analogue industry where the product is semi custom for each delivery yet had economy of scale?

The closest I’ve had first hand experience with is the B2B analytics buisnesses I’ve run, economies of scale in that case are achieved via standardization of parts of the value chain, but true product level economies of scale where never really in the cards nor achieved. I suppose the closest to that would be the promise of prefab but can see in the comments here that has not panned out

whearyou··on Auto giants like BMW, GM and Toyota make drivers ‘subscribe’ for basic features
“The "cost" doesn't reflect _in any way_ the resource/energy usage, or pollution emission of the system: only the human "cost", which is biased and lobbied strongly towards maintaining existing power”

This is the crux, and I totally and completely agree

whearyou··on Themes in academic literature: prejudice and social justice
I think you hit the nail on the head
whearyou··on Commercial-Emacs
Hey I’ll pick up after my cats any day
whearyou··on Nuclear power helped prevent ~2M deaths in the last 50 years
Agreed.

But I think the accident severity distribution for a nuclear power plan is dramatically more heavy tailed than that for other severity distribution for other power sources. That is, the impact of an individual accident for a nuclear plant can reasonably be orders of magnitude beyond the impact for a non nuclear plant.

I don’t think that’s usually taken into account and I do think that swings the cost benefit analysis into a net negative relative to other options.

whearyou··on Anarchists making their own medicine (2018)
Then you would be mistaken. The proficiency in these tasks and the cost of their execution is borne by Pharma.

Regulatory capture etc is quite real and toxic. But this eat the rich stuff is getting a little out of hand.

whearyou··on Ask HN: What are you predictions for 2022?
Must agree with all of the predictions 100%
whearyou··on Effects of Toxoplasma on Human Behavior (2007)
Ah well, still going to keep my cats
whearyou··on Chinese embassy lobbies U.S. business to oppose China bills
True, hopefully the rule systems in the US are less ass backwards than they were in the PLC.

Also as a Jewish person, a scary analog…

whearyou··on Ask HN: Whatever happened to Wolfram Alpha?
Perfect link to start my day with
whearyou··on How I learned to program
Really enjoyed the childhood part. The whole smart but won’t necessarily “succeed” until you find what you think is cool… really got me with the “yucky” comment on memorizing math
whearyou··on Why nobody hires junior developers and what happens next
My place!!

You heard it shut down right?

whearyou··on Europe’s energy crisis is about to go global as gas prices soar
Sounds like you guys are ok with the cold. When I lived in cold climates I tried what you’re describing to limit spending. Living in cold indoors wrecked my mood even more than winter generally did so I gave up on it and accepted having to spend more on heat and save elsewhere. I guess what I’m saying is that your approach probably wouldn’t work for everyone. Fortunately I live somewhere warmer now.
whearyou··on 1 out of every 153 American workers is an Amazon employee

whearyou··on Capitol Hill's mystery soda machine
Would be eerie if it wasn’t so darn cool
whearyou··on Biden launches action on "Big Tech, Big Pharma, and Big Ag" – can it be real?

whearyou··on How to Manage a Dark Ages Estate
As far as I understand this would have been post-dark ages if it's during or after Charlemange
whearyou··on As U.S. schools shuttered, student mental health cratered, survey finds
Preach
whearyou··on Israel, Cyprus and Greece agree to link power grids via subsea cable
You are not a citizen of Israel and live in land you claim for a totally separate country.

That is, literally and factually, not apartheid.

whearyou··on Israel’s lucrative and secretive cybersurveillance industry
It's dirty as all heck. The people who run it are cowboys too I've heard.
