what··on Why I'm still bearish on LLMs after Navier-Stokes
> considering LLMs currently play better than a brand new human player would

They’ve ingested all the literature on playing chess, a brand new human player has not.

what··on Why I'm still bearish on LLMs after Navier-Stokes
Because then it’s not playing chess, stockfish is?
what··on Why I'm still bearish on LLMs after Navier-Stokes
I can write a chess bot program that will beat you. Does that mean I’m good at chess?

>If they cared to have it perform well in chess games, you'd see a different shape and behavior.

So the things they claim are on the verge of AGI actually aren’t? They need to be trained for specific tasks?

what··on Why I'm still bearish on LLMs after Navier-Stokes
Humans don’t code a $game engine to play $game, they can just play it. It seems like you are the one that has gone insane.
what··on Why I'm still bearish on LLMs after Navier-Stokes
> Claude Fable would destroy any human at chess by coding a strong enough engine on the fly.

Delusional, but then Claude fable also isn’t beating any human at chess, the engine is.

You realize that vaccine hesitancy isn’t new and wasn’t a right wing thing? The right wing only has a disbelief about the covid vaccine and probably rightfully so. It went from: you can’t get it if youre vaccinated; okay you can get it but you can’t spread it; okay okay you can get it and spread but maybe the severity is reduced.

Can you share with the class the web apps you’ve built this way?
what··on I build a mechanical watch face: a real gear train for a watch with no gears
Stop with this nonsense. They could write in their own language and translate it, which wouldn’t end up being clanklish.

Why should they? Why can’t they just make shoes and be happy about it?

> So you can, in fact, get better performance sometimes by applying some variant of "assume this problem is solvable" or "other problems like this were already solved by AIs" pep talk. Not always, far from it, but it does happen on the occasion with frontier capabilities.

Are you superstitious?

what··on Killing with a car costs $1.6M, California requires drivers to carry $30K
Did you know that you could charge people different rates for insurance based on risk profiles or deny them outright? You used to be able to anyway.

I’m fine subsidizing people of a similar risk profile that have a hit by a bus moment. I’m not fine subsidizing the obese and chronically ill.

Can you show us some of these of projects?
what··on Ask HN: What is the average number of hops in your social network to 9-11 death?
Seems unlikely. There’s 400m people in America and the average is two hops away from one of the few thousand that died?
what··on Google to discontinue allowing send as an external account in Jan. 2027
Okay Claude.

what··on google.com/goto: Google's anti-scraping update
They already knew which links you clicked on though…
what··on google.com/goto: Google's anti-scraping update
You can opt out from Google scraping you though? In theory you can opt out of anyone scraping you (if people were well behaved). Google should get to opt out of being scraped too.
what··on Claude is only available to people over 18 years
Don’t care. Will not provide them with my documents either. So will not be using anthropic services.

Okay, so Biden promising stimulus checks in 2020 was also a bribe to vote for him?
what··on Copying login keychains between Macs fails on Secure Enclave Macs with Tahoe
As far as I know, you have never been able to import or export keys from the Secure Enclave. It’s more likely that previously keys were stored in the keychain and now they are generated in the SE by default.
what··on More questions about whether researchers can trust OpenAI with unpublished math
Have you been authorized to speak on OpenAI’s behalf? I assume not because your source is an NYT article.
what··on More questions about whether researchers can trust OpenAI with unpublished math
> So they reached out to the other researchers as an attempt to share the credit

This isn’t at all what happened? What are you talking about?

what··on Shopify acquires Tailwind
> Now, few coders use these learning resources (ai fetches it for them)

This isn’t the problem. The problem is that you don’t need to pay for (or care about) their services when an LLM can easily replicate them.

what··on Shopify acquires Tailwind
> AI can generate the components now at the same time it's doing everything else, so no reason to pay for their templates

So the AI can do a better job than the average front end web developer? Maybe you should take it a step further from “no reason to pay for templates”…

what··on Shopify acquires Tailwind
The pain point tailwind supposedly solves is that people who are supposed to be front end web developers don’t understand CSS.
what··on Shopify acquires Tailwind
Wait, you’re thinking about buying “skills” instead of actual components that you can just use? This seems insane to me.

There are literally two sexes. There is no doctor or scientist that would disagree. What other sexes do you think exist?
what··on iPhone Duo
Then you’d like the upgrade program? The only difference is there is a final balloon payment for it to be yours. You end up paying exactly the same as paying up front.
