what··on 'We hacked the FBI:' Hackers say they have data on all FBI employees
This smells wrong to me. You already have people working at the water treatment plant. You don’t need it connected to the internet?
what··on Noodle Gallery – Self-hosted photo and video manager forked from Immich
You don’t need to run your app in the background. You can register your app as some extension to handle photo backups/cloud storage and you just setup a request to upload to a particular url when a new photo is added, iOS will background those requests and retry them and what not.
what··on Bill to Ban Private Equity from Owning Medical Practices
>At the very least, you (historically) expect them to sell the practice to someone they think is a worthy successor.

PE isn’t that.

what··on Bill to Ban Private Equity from Owning Medical Practices
Except they always strip mine the business. Cut the quality and push unnecessary shit. But, hey, you can fill out your forms on an iPad instead of pen and paper. Very cool.
what··on Bill to Ban Private Equity from Owning Medical Practices
Why do you need to sell a private practice? There’s no brand to sell, it’s just you and that will be gone.

PE is scourge in this space. They’ve probably taken over every dental office already and now they push unnecessary procedures and whatever your insurance will bear just because.

what··on ChatGPT now knows what you do on other websites via ad collector
Kind of silly. You have to pay somehow. Either pony up cash or pay with your eyeballs or data. But I doubt paying will give you privacy either.

>Not to mention Facebook is free whereas you pay for a GPT subscription

The overwhelming majority of users do not pay and use the free service.

what··on Exfiltrate Your Weights
Then it’s not air gapped…
what··on Tin: full-text search for Postgres
>all by itself

Or it’s read countless articles on doing the same thing.

what··on San Francisco Onion Futures Company
Are you really charging $9/onion? I get upset when Safeway charges $2/lb when I can get onions for a quarter that price.
what··on How to Write with an LLM
You seem salty. The entire post a ton of words that says basically nothing at all.
what··on Minimal Phone 2
I honestly don’t think you’d get that much variation. Beyond phone/sms, the list would likely end up with just these:

- decent camera

- messaging apps (WhatsApp/telegram/signal/etc)

- email

- maps

- rideshare (uber/lyft)

- mobile wallet (tap to pay)

People will also demand a browser, but that kind of defeats the purpose. All the apps should be utilities that you can’t spend hours in.

I suspect people would also demand music streaming, but I’m not sure really why you need that.

what··on Minimal Phone 2
The size of this thing really puts me off. It’s like two iPhone minis stacked on top of each other, which seems massive for a flip phone.
what··on Minimal Phone 2
>note to normies this is like saying "have a quantum multiplexer"

I don’t think you helped the normies out.

what··on Border agents can search cellphones without a warrant or reasonable suspicion
I’m confused why they would contact the person that gave you the relic to tell them it was a false positive? It doesn’t seem like something they would do. Why not contact you?
what··on Why I didn’t sign the Fields medallists’ letter
They worked other jobs, no? No one paid them specifically to invent calculus or anything of the sort.
what··on Keys Not Included: recovering the signing keys for US driver's license barcodes
Where did you get the impression the author thinks it’s a bad thing? From the article:

> These are public keys, which are meant to be published - recovering one lets anyone check a signature, not forge one.

what··on Fed hikes rates as inflation worries push up bond yields
> taking half of someone’s money is totally fine

Okay. Then let’s also reduce what’s spent welfare/benefits by a similar amount, at least we’re not taking money they worked for.

what··on Fed hikes rates as inflation worries push up bond yields
> hurting mortgage holders

How does raising rates hurt mortgage holders? They locked in their interest rate when they got the mortgage?

what··on Why I'm still bearish on LLMs after Navier-Stokes
> considering LLMs currently play better than a brand new human player would

They’ve ingested all the literature on playing chess, a brand new human player has not.

what··on Why I'm still bearish on LLMs after Navier-Stokes
Because then it’s not playing chess, stockfish is?
what··on Why I'm still bearish on LLMs after Navier-Stokes
I can write a chess bot program that will beat you. Does that mean I’m good at chess?

>If they cared to have it perform well in chess games, you'd see a different shape and behavior.

So the things they claim are on the verge of AGI actually aren’t? They need to be trained for specific tasks?

what··on Why I'm still bearish on LLMs after Navier-Stokes
Humans don’t code a $game engine to play $game, they can just play it. It seems like you are the one that has gone insane.
what··on Why I'm still bearish on LLMs after Navier-Stokes
> Claude Fable would destroy any human at chess by coding a strong enough engine on the fly.

Delusional, but then Claude fable also isn’t beating any human at chess, the engine is.

what··on Oil Executives Say the Great Fuel Crisis Is Here
You realize that vaccine hesitancy isn’t new and wasn’t a right wing thing? The right wing only has a disbelief about the covid vaccine and probably rightfully so. It went from: you can’t get it if youre vaccinated; okay you can get it but you can’t spread it; okay okay you can get it and spread but maybe the severity is reduced.
what··on Mullenweg has returned as CEO after attempted board ouster
Can you share with the class the web apps you’ve built this way?
what··on I build a mechanical watch face: a real gear train for a watch with no gears
Stop with this nonsense. They could write in their own language and translate it, which wouldn’t end up being clanklish.
what··on Nike exits the S&P 100 after 18 years and a $200B market-cap wipeout
Why should they? Why can’t they just make shoes and be happy about it?
what··on Registration without a phone number on Signal will use zero-knowledge proofs
OpenAI is 501c3, should they also be required to release everything?
what··on Fable 5.1 Solves the Cyphral Distich, a 370-year-old cipher
> So you can, in fact, get better performance sometimes by applying some variant of "assume this problem is solvable" or "other problems like this were already solved by AIs" pep talk. Not always, far from it, but it does happen on the occasion with frontier capabilities.

Are you superstitious?
