wfwefwef32··on The Web Is Dead, Long Live the Web
I'm curious why can't the html standard be defined in form of source code (of a parser and a render), rather than human language.

the trouble developers have to support many browsers is because of the implementation variations.

a recent issue I had on Edge is that if the border color is #FFFFFFFF, it is rendered as black, but on other browsers, this is white.

What if the standard itself is defined as a common source code, and not owned by any company?

the standard implementation could be a dumb one without any hardware acceleration. It only needs to define the correct behavior. Any customized implementation has to conform to it.

wfwefwef32··on Questions to Ask Before Joining a Startup
I'm about to agree to join a startup, but reading all the comments made me hesitate.

But I don't see a growth opportunity in a big company, the work is boring as hell and there are engineers, who joined 5 years earlier than I did, are still on same level as mine.

And the key engineering work is hold tightly by early members, unless they retire, I don't see a chance.

And I want to do robotics. Although my current company is investing in the area, they only need people with the right background, i.e. PhDs in robotics. And I have talk with google recruiters, they let me choose a position before the interview, but all my selections are as boring as my current position.

Doing a startup seems to be only way?

wfwefwef32··on Chinese Propaganda Course on EdX: Xi Jinping's Thought on Socialism
https://foreignpolicy.com/2018/10/18/i-mastered-xi-jinping-t...

Someone got a certificate ....

North Korea is more socialism than China. I will only learn from the best.

If North Korea had an open course I would take it. Specifically, I'm interested in the course on how to get fat alone ...

wfwefwef32··on Ask HN: Is it hard to get hired on F1 OPT?
more than 500 employees I guess.

This is something you can ask when applying a job. They will tell you if they sponsor.

wfwefwef32··on Ask HN: Is it hard to get hired on F1 OPT?
not hard at all. usually you apply jobs and doing interviews on F1. Once landed a job, discuss a starting date with the employer and apply for opt, might take 4 months. once have opt, you can start.

once start, you can apply for h1b. the time for filing h1b is April, so ideally you should land a job offer before April, otherwise you will have wait for April of the next year.

bigger companies are more likely to sponsor h1b, whereas smaller ones and startups will probably won't do it. there are requirements on the ratio of citizen employees vs foreigners and minimum payment, smaller companies usually won't be able to meet the requirement.

wfwefwef32··on Facebook Network Breach Impacts Up to 50M Users
Recently talked to 2 friends working for fb. According to them, the culture there is very toxic. For a master's degree, once get in, you need to get promoted in 22 months (I might misremember the actual number.) or you will have to leave. Debugging is never counted as a real work, so for quick promotion, nobody wants to solve bugs unless a bug becomes too obvious. And they also complained about no work-life balance. They got pushed to check-in code at 12a.m. for example.
wfwefwef32··on Ask HN: What features would you add in a computer language?
c++ static_if but for class members:

template<class Type> class A {

if constexpr (std::is_same<Type, int>::value) { int a; }

}

wfwefwef32··on Is anyone doing “Tinder, but with video”? Why not?

I have no idea of what APL is, and the thing doesn't even bother explaining it.
wfwefwef32··on Ask HN: Are you still using REST for your new projects?
I only have some rudimentary understanding of GraphQL, I didn't select it in the end, and went back to rest.

I think GraphQL only adds query to rest. Could be an implementation burden on the server side in order to fulfill different queries. For a site like facebook, which provides public API, GraphQL might have more flexibility. But for my personal project, I write both the backend and the frontend, I know exactly what data I want for each endpoint. There is no flexibility needed, as I design the database, the api endpoints based on my specific use-case.

And I don't want to support any public apis

wfwefwef32··on Ask HN: Should GitHub use as a political discussion platform?
In my opinion, it shouldn't be used that way. But people have few choices. If a server is within the country, it gets controlled by the government. For servers outside the country, all blogs and forums are censored. Only those utility sites are accessible, because otherwise companies can't operate. They will be a bit more cautious on censoring those sites. That's why they started DDOS on those sites to force them to remove those contents.

p2p forums/social networks should be a better solution.
