wezm··on Finding an Alternative to iOS
Thanks for reading even though you don’t agree with the premise. Shame it’s so hard to actually vote with our wallets. It will be interesting to see how the various App Store investigations/legal cases play out.
wezm··on Show HN: Jhall – A JavaScript Alternative to Dhall
To me one of the primary benefits of dhall is the type system checking that the structure of your data and its values match expectations. By using JavaScript don’t you lose all that?
wezm··on Allsorts: font parser and shaping engine implemented in Rust
pcwalton captures it pretty well in a comment above: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=21580718 that and wanting to have an implementation in a memory safe language that might prove useful to others.
wezm··on Allsorts: font parser and shaping engine implemented in Rust
Yes, this was definitely part of the motivation for embarking on this project.
wezm··on Cross Compiling Rust for FreeBSD with Docker
After I wrote this I discovered that cross[1] supports FreeBSD so it's probably the better option.

wezm··on Void Linux (musl) on the Huawei MateBook X Pro
It’s great. No complaints so far.
wezm··on Void Linux (musl) on the Huawei MateBook X Pro
I built a 12 core/24 thread Ryzen 9 machine: https://bitcannon.net/page/ryzen9-pc/
wezm··on Void Linux (musl) on the Huawei MateBook X Pro
There are very few other options with an aluminium body. Razer laptops are one but Linux isn’t great on them from what I’ve read.

I’ll be interested to see how it ages as well. I have a 2013 MacBook Pro and it’s still in excellent condition.

wezm··on A Tiling Desktop Environment
You read the whole section on KDE right?
wezm··on The Embedded Rust Book
There is this one, https://github.com/mvirkkunen/usb-device/blob/master/README.... which apparently works well enough to power a keyboard: https://github.com/TeXitoi/keyberon
wezm··on Rebuilding My Personal Infrastructure With Alpine Linux and Docker
Thanks for reading. It’s a 2 CPU 4Gb RAM instance. It’s probably over specced...
wezm··on Rebuilding My Personal Infrastructure With Alpine Linux and Docker
Thank you. I didn’t know about this.
wezm··on Rebuilding My Personal Infrastructure With Alpine Linux and Docker
Yeah my host is running Alpine as well the containers so it's init needs to start docker, cron, etc.
wezm··on Rebuilding My Personal Infrastructure With Alpine Linux and Docker
This is the CPU load on the server right now: https://imgur.com/a/nuM3CqX

Being on HN front page has pushed it up from a baseline of 7.5% utilisation to about 12.5%.

wezm··on 600 days of postmarketOS
You can read more about sr.ht at https://meta.sr.ht/ as well as on Drew’s blog https://drewdevault.com/2018/11/15/sr.ht-general-availabilit...
wezm··on Aminal: Golang terminal emulator from scratch
Alacritty supports scrolling as of version 0.2.0 https://github.com/jwilm/alacritty/releases/tag/v0.2.0
wezm··on Repl.it raises $4.5M from A16Z, Paul Graham, and others
I gave this a look but the version of Rust is 1.9 from May 2016... There's been 20 releases (excluding patch releases) since then. For a language with such great backwards compatibility seems like it should be kept more up to date.
wezm··on Show HN: SAN – a Safe and Nice TOML/YAML Alternative
This looks great. I love the strictness and improvements over JSON and also the goal of preserving comments. The absence of specified a date type feels like a back compared to TOML though. Without this they end up as strings in all manner of formats.
wezm··on Nannou – An Open Source Creative Coding Framework in Rust
This looks like a novel use of Rust. As a Melbournian it's nice to see Scienceworks mentioned in the post.
wezm··on A Year Away from Mac OS
> There is a silver lining though, gnome4 has plans to ditch js.

This is intriguing. Do you have a link to more info?, I can't seem to find anything.

wezm··on A Year Away from Mac OS
I looked at it. As far as I can tell it doesn’t do envelope budgeting with automatic flow. This is the key feature to me and why I went with MoneyWell back in 2008.
wezm··on A Year Away from Mac OS
Interesting. I was aware of the CLI but didn't know it worked on FreeBSD.
wezm··on A Year Away from Mac OS
Thanks! What OS/distro did you settle on?

wezm··on A Year Away from Mac OS
It works for me. What are you seeing? (Feel free to email wes AT wezm.net)
wezm··on Building a Hackintosh Pro
This is pretty much what the elementary folks are trying to do https://elementary.io/
wezm··on Elementary Is Crowdfunding a Pay-What-You-Want App Store for Open Source Apps
Instabacked! Elementary is doing great work making Linux a viable mainstream alternative to macOS and Windows. It's a huge task but having funding to help them and open source developers is sure to help.
wezm··on Finding an Alternative to Mac OS X – Part 2
Ohh thanks for this, I'll definitely play around with that: Main website appears to be down, GitHub repo is here: https://github.com/bohoomil/fontconfig-ultimate
wezm··on Finding an Alternative to Mac OS X – Part 2
Yeah definitely looks like it's Open Sans when viewed like that.
wezm··on Finding an Alternative to Mac OS X – Part 2
I does indeed look good (to me) and they have hired a designer that I greatly respect to work on it (https://dribbble.com/sdw) but it's an Electron app (goodbye memory) and requires you to hand over your email account details to Nylas: https://support.nylas.com/hc/en-us/articles/217518207-Why-do...
