westwooded··on Griddy Is Shutting Down
> On the same day when ERCOT announced that it had a $2.1 billion shortfall, it decided to take this action against only one company that represents a tiny fraction of the market and that shortfall. We have always been transparent and customer-centric at every step.

Griddy defaulted and was unable to pay their financial obligation to the market. They tried to put some marketing spin on this but simply put, if you cannot pay your obligations, then ERCOT will initiate the default procedure. This is terrible for the remaining market participants who are still solvent because now Griddy's debts will be shared by the market.

Griddy should inform the public how much exactly of the $2.1B short pay they are responsible for.

westwooded··on America’s ‘Fried Chicken War’
Love that they use lard vs. the unhealthy vegetable seed oils that all places use nowadays.

Just like how McDonald's used to use beef tallow.

Best fried chicken has to be Korean fried chicken at this point. Double frying it gives the inside the tenderness temperature while the outside is perfectly crispy.

westwooded··on Wall Street’s Largest Oil Trade (2017)
Would be useful to know the long term profitability of this annual hedge rather than cherry picking a great year. If, hypothetically, every other year they lost a billion, then this $5B gain doesn't seem as great.
westwooded··on The Necessity of Nuclear
Transmission is actually one of the biggest problems identified by US ISOs. Not easy to get the power where it is needed bc big transmission lines are costly.
westwooded··on Tracking Blood Sugar
If I'm not a diabetic but just want to track my blood glucose, will a doctor still prescribe me one? Will insurance balk at it? Any estimates as to final cost?
westwooded··on The carbs-obesity hypothesis
A friend explained this to me with an analogy.

"If you make more money than you spend, you will have a lot of money!"

That statement is tautological, and obvious. But it doesn't address how to become rich.

Now let's compare.

"If you eat more calories than you expend, you will gain weight"

Again, this is likely true, but just very very incomplete. It doesn't attempt to truly get at the why. There are a few hypotheses for why CICO often does such a poor job at explaining the obesity epidemic. The two pieces I find most convincing are (1) there is some metabolic advantage based on the types of foods you eat, and (2) some of the calories out are excreted via waste and not processed by the body, and therefore, the simple CICO equation isn't complex enough.

westwooded··on 28-year-old makes millions buying from Walmart, selling on Amazon
I agree. The article is intentionally vague. Millions of dollars in revenue is relatively easy vs. millions in net profit.

That said, presumably the value of the entity could be a multiple of the revenue. Either way the article fails to shed enough light on it.

westwooded··on The Most and Least Expensive Cars to Maintain
Tough to trust this analysis... For example Cadillac is the #3 worst brand yet there are no Cadillac models in the worst 20 models.
westwooded··on Introducing the 2nd Generation Boosted Board
Competition really heating up in this space. The other leading electric skateboard company from Australia just announced their second generation too and it has a whopping 31 mile range.
