wesselbindt··on Zelensky leaves White House after angry meeting
I'm curious where you see Libya fitting in this pattern.

Personally I'm more inclined to believe that the ally-turned-foe's invasion serves as a convenient excuse for the US to attack, rather than the root cause. One thing that at least Gadaffi and Saddam have in common is nationalizing their oil industry. This to me seems like a much more believable reason for US aggression.

wesselbindt··on Zelensky leaves White House after angry meeting
> the US can turn from ally to bully

This has been par for the course for decades. They used to be on good terms with Saddam Hussein, Gaddafi, Iran after they couped Mossadegh. Heck, they even armed and trained Osama Bin Laden to fight the soviets in Afghanistan. It has always been a deadly gambit to ally yourself with the United States.

I'm not saying it's universally the case of course. For every Saddam there's a Pinochet, for every Gaddafi there's a Suharto. But the fact that the US can drop an ally just like that should not be a surprise to anyone.

wesselbindt··on Clean Code vs. A Philosophy Of Software Design
This too seems like a fairly hardline stance to take. I think it's not surprising that you'd have a hard time collaborating with people you'd refer to as unlikeable, unproductive, unpragmatic, overzealous, frothy idiots.

It reminds me of the standard joke about veganism: "how do you know someone is vegan? Don't worry they'll tell you"

It's a very ironic joke, because the people I hear talking about veganism the most are non-vegans complaining about veganism. In this thread too. All I see is people complaining about how dogmatic clean code people are, and I see no examples of that in this thread. The only strong and absolute language I see is from those who are complaining about CC people.

Bear in mind, I don't have a dog in this fight. I'm not vegan, my methods are sometimes longer than four lines, and I do occasionally write a comment. But if this thread is anything to go by, the clean code folks seem a lot nicer to work with than the reactionaries.

> idiots who froth at the mouth

That seems like an unnecessarily harsh way to refer to people.

I admit, I actually don't know much about the php ecosystem. I just extrapolated what I know about the python web app ecosystem, and that's probably not entirely fair.
wesselbindt··on Laravel Cloud
The sense I'm getting from the replies to your comment is that this product is targeting that segment of the engineering community that knows how to write Laravel apps, but is somehow unable to run Laravel apps.
wesselbindt··on Laravel Cloud
Well no, but chuck your app in a container and you've got something that'll run just fine on ec2 or a dozen other language agnostic platforms. What is the value add of restricting the framework you can use for your app?

I hope you find one one day. It makes such a difference to have a test suite which you trust, and which doesn't erupt in false failures at the drop of a hat. I completely agree, not all tests are created equal.

wesselbindt··on Tariffs result in 10% laptop price hike in U.S. says Acer CEO
Trump's primarily looking to hit the "I live paycheck to paycheck and my washing machine just broke" crowd, I believe. That's about 30% of households.
wesselbindt··on You're not a senior engineer until you've worked on a legacy project (2023)
I specifically mean code not covered by automated tests. And this almost always falls in the dislike/misunderstand pile for me, but not conversely.
wesselbindt··on Bezos' Blue Origin to layoff about 10% across its space, launch business
I think you're replying to the wrong comment. The one you replied to doesn't mention headlines, but points to public knowledge pertaining to the opinions of Musk. If you want more: his family moved to South Africa because they _agreed_ with apartheid, and Musk is part of an administration that is setting up a concentration camp in Cuba, and advocates for the ethnic cleansing of people.
wesselbindt··on Bezos' Blue Origin to layoff about 10% across its space, launch business
Alright, the guy retweeting eugenics and antisemitic replacement theory content, cozying up to a German neo-nazi party with prominent holocaust denying members threw a gesture twice that is exactly the same in shape and context as the Hitler salute, but we better give him the benefit of the doubt. This is absolutely ridiculous.
wesselbindt··on Bezos' Blue Origin to layoff about 10% across its space, launch business
The headline was "Hitler dead", not "Hitler apparently dead". The headline was "Apartheid ended", not "Apartheid ended, allegedly". If a prime minister gets shot and dies, the headline's "prime minister murdered", not "prime minister possibly murdered" or "prime minister dies, possible connection to being shot beforehand".

The headline should be "Elon Musk does Hitler salute on stage", but it isn't. It should be a really big deal, but somehow, it isn't.

wesselbindt··on Bezos' Blue Origin to layoff about 10% across its space, launch business
I googled "Elon Musk nazi salute", and all I'm seeing is "apparent", in the Guardian. You're just flat out wrong.

> media would savagely quote them

I think you're confused as to which side of the employer-employee struggle the media aligns itself with. All major news outlets are owned by the owning class, whose interests align with those of Bezos and other employers.

Recently, a member of the owning class did a literal actual Hitler salute on stage twice, and the closest the mass media came to calling a spade a spade was saying things like "alleged resemblance to a Roman salute".

wesselbindt··on The European Vat Is Not a Discriminatory Tax Against US Exports
Whether or not some action is discriminatory is inherent to that action. Something I do can't be considered discriminatory because of what someone else does. So for example, if I shake hands with all people of all colors, you cannot call that discriminatory just because my neighbor doesn't shake hands with people. That would be completely nonsensical.

Similarly, if the EU applies VAT to all goods sold, that can't be considered discriminatory just because some other country doesn't apply VAT.

wesselbindt··on ICE wants to know if you're posting negative things about it online
I have been using their contact form [1] to self report whenever I say something negative about ICE. I think they kind of suck. Oh whelp there I go again! Better let them know. The linked form has a "cybercrime" category, which I believe thought crimes fall under.

wesselbindt··on Firing programmers for AI is a mistake
I think arguably there's still a quantity issue, but I'm no expert on LLMs. Plus I hear the windows source code is a bit of a nightmare. But for every windows there's a TempleOS I suppose.
wesselbindt··on Firing programmers for AI will destroy everything
> as far as I can see it's the amount and quality of training data that counts

Well there's your reason. OS code is not as in demand or prevalent as crud web app code, so there's less relevant data to train your models on.

wesselbindt··on Firing programmers for AI will destroy everything
> Or the mission critical systems powering this airplane you're flying next week... to pretend like this will all be handled by LLMs is so insanely out of touch with reality.

Airplane manufacturers have proved themselves more than willing to sacrifice safety for profits. What makes you think they would stop short of using LLMs?
