wernerb··on CRISPR silkworms make spider silk that defies constraints
Don't let this spider get near a Sony movie studio executive
wernerb··on Unity Overhauls Controversial Price Hike After Game Developers Revolt
They apparently can't back down completely. The Elon inspired ceo really wants that installation counting in there. It's despicable. You don't pay car companies extra fees if the car gets additional/new drivers. You get the revenue on the initial sale. If this is not enough you need to increase margins and make a better compelling product.

Apparently there will be proprietary software that is going to count installations (.....) but for now according to Bloomberg unity customers need to self report.

wernerb··on France is going to destroy wine for 200M €, topping up a 160M € EU fund
Well, slightly worse.. France destroys wine so they can get funds from taxes coming from France + the rest of the EU.
wernerb··on Amsterdam to use “noise cameras” against too loud cars
Completely agree, ban them altogether and mandate electric mopeds instead. Even better, tax them and subsidize the models.
wernerb··on Massive geothermal apartment complex is going up in Brooklyn, first of its kind
The hot water probably gets mixed with cold at the manifold, you do not put 70 degrees water in your floor.

What i dont understand is how it is efficient to deliver a constant 70 degrees heating pipe. There has to be some kind of boiler/trigger right?

wernerb··on Walmart will add thousands of EV charging stations to stores by 2030
As a non-native, does this make sense? Do people spend hours at this Walmart?
wernerb··on NASA unveils new moon suit
It stands out to me that it is not white but black with red accents. A pure white suit would surely be more visible right I'm guessing. If an accident occurs and you are lying half in the regolith with the red accents as the only visual guide, i can't help but think a white suit would be better.

Maybe a white suit gets dirty easily from the regolith anyway so they went with dark to start with ?

wernerb··on Java is in decline, and there's data to prove it
As long as there are no cheap go programmers to find you will see java being very relevant.
wernerb··on I worked at LastPass as an engineer
I'm not sure what you are asking. For any reasonable service/Saad this is by far not te norm for end user credentials. They are always hashed, hopefully salted and with a strong algorithm.

Administrator credentials are harder yes. Something like hashicorp vault can be made to fit any company (custom backend plugins). For most stuff it already has backend plugins available (ssh, any rdbms). The open source version I have seen can fit a large fintech startup no problem.

wernerb··on I worked at LastPass as an engineer
This is such a non-issue. You build in flags in the clients that are server activated "needs-reencrypt". After login (local client) flag is read from server and logic begins. You notify the user their vault needs stronger encryption. They can choose to continue and enter password, skip for now or ignore for 1 month (or something more reasonable).

The point is you explain why you do this. Start the message with "We care about your encryption" and go from there to explain that they need you to upgrade because the don't know your master key, they need your help to do it.

Adding this kind of behavior should be their core business. Apparently it's not.

wernerb··on California pulls the plug on rooftop solar
In the end there is no realistic future where every home has an efficient battery. The bulk of power has to come from grid/utility that provides storage.

Honestly my hope was that metering like this would be an incentive to build said storage but it is not. In the end the grid/utility operators are crying missed profits and lobbying government to step in "or they will become bankrupt". It's a sad state of affairs, these utilities make money hand over fist but not doing the investments they are supposed to do.

wernerb··on Netherlands to close up to 3k farms to comply with EU rules
Unfortunately, yes. It seems like it. For a long time nitrogen had been a problem but politicians have delayed action. Banks have even encouraged expanding farms after milk quotas were undone a few years ago by granting large loans. I am sympathetic to this..

The buyouts of top polluters are part of a targeted effort to comply with rulings to make sure nitrogen excesses do not occur near specific nature sites. The alternative is (probably) to instead scale down a lot of other farms as well. The former option makes more sense to me. Seemingly random voluntary opt-in buyouts were also offered some time ago as an option but some news cycles showed farms with elderly owners and no inheritors or really small farms wanting to be bought out.

Its all stil rather vague and complex what is and what is not happening which I hope gets rectified in the near future.

wernerb··on Do you guys thank Siri?
Ideally the responses are curt and short. Such as the star trek computer that just has a beep to acknowledge. I don't really feel it necessary we need to start anthropomorphizing machines. "hey Google" is spectacularly annoying. I am not talking to Google (large corp), and I don't want to greet the plastic on my desk in order for it to function.

Can only hope in the future we can say "computer", state what we want and then ack with a beep.

Anthropomorphizing is all marketing and tricking people into attachments to devices. A side effect is that a wrong response creates not only annoyance (oops wrong prompt), but now also disappointment (why doesn't Siri listen to me!?).

wernerb··on EasyList is in trouble and so are many ad blockers
This would be a great use case for IPFS
wernerb··on Old school Linux administration – my next homelab generation
I think it's great to "bring" knowledge to devs in this model. But not commit to individual wishes for features and implement them willy illy. The "ops guy" needs a team too, preferably to build a company shared platform that suits the large majority. This only goes of course when you either hit scale or are a large company. When smaller it's perfectly fine to unload unwanted things to one or two people. I do very strongly believe in "you build it you run it". Keeping servers up is different than keeping your application up. I think a dev should know what health checks/probes are, what a good period time they need for their application. It's the "ops guy"'s job to make the dev guys job as easy as possible and bring expertise and knowledge when needed
wernerb··on Remembering When America Banned Sliced Bread
Ah yes still waiting on that futuristic cheap bread slicer machine. If my bread is more or less than 15mm it will be a day to remember
wernerb··on HashiCorp’s multi-product strategy
"Code generation" is pure evil.

I second that Terraform needs to work at least on dynamically specifying providerblocks. This is where people usually resort to terragrunt.

Workspaces and state layering are in my experience hard on the novices and unfortunately they turn to terragrunt.

wernerb··on Kubernetes for Developers Who Know How to Develop
The interface/dsl should have to be really easy though to make it worth it. E.g., if you are making your own buildpack on heroku you have gone too far. The whole idea should be ubiquity in knowledge of these platforms. The idea that you can easily hire someone or expect someone to have these skills. Kubernetes might not be simple but it is becoming ubiquitous and that is worth something in the long run.

So if you are looking for the easy solution, use a SaaS / PaaS that really is turnkey and, for example is not just another peaky abstraction of kubernetes. You are choosing an easy solution so you should not need to invest a lot of your energy. Likewise recognize that when you need more customization that you might need to jump ship instead of investing in ducktaping your SaaS/PaaS.

wernerb··on Ask HN: How can a US SW engineer to get a working visa in Europe?
The 30 percent cap is eyed to be removed
wernerb··on Webcams aren't good enough
Even if i hook up a great camera, chrome/Firefox's webrtc will squeeze my bitrate and lower res to 720p. There is no way from the client to upgrade basic quality for Meet/Teams/Zoom web apps.
wernerb··on Terraform should have remained stateless
There are plenty of providers/resources that have no such metadata
wernerb··on We reduced 502 errors by caring about PID 1 in Kubernetes
Interested in the proprietary backend part. What is proprietary?
wernerb··on We reduced 502 errors by caring about PID 1 in Kubernetes
Kubernetes lets you override the dockerfile with "command" and "args". Always try to be explicit especially in nonstandard/exceptional application images. A shared base image with known proven startup knowledge that is used throughout all applications is easier to manage and more transparent. In more pluriform environments just submit and ensure the configuration of your pod/deployment is as explicit we possible.
wernerb··on Japan's population falls by record 644,000 to 125.5M in 2021
The youth wanted Melechon and then were forced between Macron and Le Pen..
wernerb··on Japan's population falls by record 644,000 to 125.5M in 2021
I am Dutch / European and do not understand why change/amendments of the constitution is not generally acceptable/attractive by the US population.

Surely societal change must and does change the efficacy and context of law over time?

wernerb··on Japan's population falls by record 644,000 to 125.5M in 2021
Found this out because the immigrants are almost fluent in English as opposed to the Japanese who can read/write but not speak. It made for an embarrassing conversation when asking for directions. I implied she was local in my thanks. She was quick to note (although very friendly) that she was in fact not japanese and actually vietnamese.

wernerb··on Belarus referendum approves proposal to renounce non-nuclear status
I voted with a blank vote to make a point against "advisory" referendum. It in my eyes weakens the system where I vote on parties to make informed decisions on behalf of me.
wernerb··on An update on AirTag and unwanted tracking
GPS trackers are a lot pricier and often bulkier though, somewhat limiting the probability of it to be used by the average stalker. Barrier to entry is significantly higher.
wernerb··on Building a modern home in the woods
I live in the same such country with such rules. They assume rightly that if you request that amperage you will use it and they will plan and bill you to handle it. And yes we then also pay per kWh :)

Why would it be harmful to run at the amperage that I'm buying ? What disincentives do I need?
