weq··on New battery-free technology can power devices using ambient RF signals
Im assuming this is something related to Maxwell Chikumbutso's "invention" ?

https://www.prv-engineering.co.uk/free-energy-vehicle-innova...

His on national tv promoting this with the president of the country. Alot of people think its a grift, the devices seem to be simply inverters.

weq··on Show HN: Voice-Pro – AI Voice Cloning
This tech is not only great for bulldozing grandma, its great at stealing content from other creators and rebranding it as your own. Based on the github, it kind of seems like thats exactly whats being advertised as the use case. Steal content from BBC, cut it up and pull the noise out/vocals/revoice the content so the algorithm cant detect the plagorism easily. The imagine detection is no where no the audio detection for copyright strikes.

There is a massive problem with this on youtube. Pretty much every category on youtube now has a host of these bots trolling content and playing the youtube strike system like a banjo. There are channels detected to showing you how to setup these content mills. This tool can make you good money.

weq··on Google Cloud files complaint due to Microsoft's anti-competitive licensing
100%. Amazon is the anti-competitive king. They just copy everything thats popular. unfortunately you cant just copy your way to sql server. Apple, Google, they all do the same. Sour grapes the MS does it better.
weq··on Amazon tells employees to return to office five days a week
Instead of announcing mass layoffs, tech companies use RTO orders.

They are very effective at trimming the fat and creating peons. Also effective in stopping the corperate real estate crash that alot of important trust funds depend on.

weq··on Policy: Generative AI (e.g., ChatGPT) is banned
lol peak AI only exists because of humans answering questions.

SO is positioning itself with a clean dataset, likely with an agreement to sell that data to other compnanies?

weq··on Artificial intelligence is losing hype
This is how i currently utilise and view The AI tools. I replaced the googling in my flow with it. It might have taken me 20minutes before to get the boilerplate together, now its a minute. Depending on the type of code legacy overheads you have, results may vary. If you can break your problem down into small descrete bits.

The way the OP here was talking about sonnet being above way above chatgtp in this case, it could be true. Google probably has the largest Go codebases on search to train the AI on higher quiality inputs. Go is a simpler language with less variation over time compared to something like .net also adding to its corner.

ive always been the type of person to use the right language for the each use case. For the last 10+ years ive primarly been building cross platform apps that target every common OS. So these "ai" tools like phind.com give me a universal API interface and generate code which is equiv to a SO answer. They are the ability of an outsourced junior dev who you would never let push code to prod, that doesnt have the language barrier but retains the fake dergee overheads ;)

weq··on Stripe's Monorepo Developer Environment
Sounds like you made a massive tradeoff in code coupling if your cant easily swap out remote for local queues etc. But i get it, when your thinking cloud first, understanding where your abstractions start or end can be a complex topic that creates flow on effects and often stop the whizz bang cloud demo code from copy/paste working in your solution. Depending on the stage of your company, this could be a feature or a bug. maybe you have so much complexity in your solution from spreading buisness logic across services that your solution only makes sense when your developing against prod-like-infra and in that scenario im seeing a benifit of having cloud first dev infra because keeping that beast tamed otherwise would be a monumental challange given the perchant for cloud-first to be auto-update-everything.
weq··on Seeding steel frames brings destroyed coral reefs back to life
I remmeber the conversation i had with a guy whos job it was to lobby the government in behalf of mining companies for new mining sites. His words were exactly "No project i lobby wont get approved, its just worth too much money to too many people. And dont complain to me about the environment destruction of the mines when you cant exist without your lighting and gas at home." "Corel doesnt make me money. I dont care about dead corel reefs, by the time they all die they will have found out a way to grow them back quickly and everything will be good again".

So thats the ideaology of the people who work in this space. This person lobbied for the largest mining companies in Aus. I guess it really was a preminiation of today, when the GBR has finally shrunk enough to have more uses to corperations then simply being a tailings pond. Now they can leech the funding being earmarked for recovering the reef that they killed. Win win! Money talks. Rare us is ok, but really rare, now thats were the money is at.

weq··on Uber to pay $272M to Australian taxi operators
The prices of cartel approved taxi plates crashed from ~200-150k to ~20k overnight once the market saw that the gov was letting Uber continue operating. Uber didnt compete on the same field, they created a new game, that was completely illegal in Australia, on another field. If a regular joe did that he would gaol.

This payment compentsates those taxi licence holders who held the dip.

weq··on Phind-70B: Closing the code quality gap with GPT-4 Turbo while running 4x faster
ive been using this for a few weeks and im impressed at its results. no signup is key for me, i can share it around to anyone and they just get the info and then can start using it also. IMO the answers are fine for my tasks as a a substiute for a junior dev. its slightly faster then searching google cause it saves me a few clicks - handy if your already screen sharing with someone and just looking to fact check.
weq··on Testcontainers
thanks for the responses, i just wanted to cut through the marketing. taking on standardised tools is a win for me, i just wanted to know about real world experience and use-case. Indeed taking on deps is not something i do lightly.

> value of test pyramid

I mean more from the perspective of covering your bases, you never just want one kind of testing pattern in your project. Each codebase is different and i agree that taking on high value test styles/cases is a project by project challange that should be tailored by many variables. The shape of your testing pyramid may be different to others. If your inheriting a legacy system, maybe its top heavy because the effort/reward ratio just isnt there. In this circumstances i usually take on the approach of "add more layers when bugs are found" to hone in on places that could use more or less test coverage.

Our inhouse framework is really just a wrapper around certain tools that fill different gaps (think docker/selenium etc) in order for different projects to build suites that are compatible with our ci/cd pipelines that do things like generate environments on demand to run test suites against. So dropping in testcontainers to replace the home-grown docker will be trivial. Keeping test frameworks fresh and compatible with the cloud vendors that agreesively upgrade is a challange just like keeping the API bleed of other programming deps is. Our test suites essentially have a domain language that is consistant. We can upgrade selenium, swap functions for different operations, without having to change any tests. Same goes for unit or integration tests - they are exactly the same in terms of assertions, syntax etc, they may just just have different environment setup logic. CI/CD can inject and overrride logic as it needs. Sometimes its suitable, in some cases, to mock certain external hard deps in integration tests for instance to having all the unit testing tools availible a plus. Or in other cases, we may take a unit test written against mocks, and inject real deps into it for certain CI/CD scenarios.

weq··on Testcontainers
Can you explain more in more detail why this is a game changer if i already have an inhouse framework that is similiar in using docker for integration tests? Does it start docker up faster then you could do normally? Is it just the out of the box apis it provides?

I dont know why integration testing like this is considered a gamechanger. the testing pyramid is a testing pyramid for a reason and its always considered them important. Sometimes starting with integration tests in your project is right because your dont waste time doing manual point and clicks. Instead you design your system around being able to integration test, this includes when you choose dependancies. You think to yourself "how easily will that be able to be stood up on its own from a command?" If the answer is "not very good" then you move on.

weq··on New car buying guide: the algorithm (2021)
New cars are built out of plastic and are thus limited to a 10yr life span, fullstop. Every one of them. Then you add electric to the mix, and in 5-10yrs ur gonna need to buy a new one, no matter the brand, because your battery will fail. The lucky ones get a second under warrenty.

I dont know, i stopped buying new cars once computers were added. I own a 95` landcruiser with 300k on the clock and i beleive it has another 300 which will basically mean it will do me for life. And the advantage of buying and old car, and learning todo the maintence yourself, is that not only do you save money from every angle, your car is on the other side of the bell curve where they start to increase in value again. In the 10yrs ive owned it, my car has increased in value by ~40%. Its made of metal, and is held together with bolts not glue. It will not dry rot away, and rust is easily controlled with modern epoxy paints. It will not go out of fashion given the thirst car collectors of the future will have the past.

My plan is to swap a hydrogen motor in i guess once mature the tech and consequently ban diesel.

This is from someone who in 2005 bought his first ~50k$ car over the internet, one click style, without seeing it in person from a used car guy (it was 2nd hand, 10k on the clock, ~10% of retailm had 2yrs warrenty). Thats really the problem with buying a one-click these days though, the people who buy them are too risk adverse to be without a warrenty or buy second hand. So they crash the value of their own investments because the others know what to expect with seconds on a modern car. The reason people sell cars after 1 or 2 years is many, in my country, leasing cars like this is maximises your dollar vs tax.

Any moden car: ~50k outlay, 10yr useful life

vs

i bought a 2002 rav4 with 400k for ~2k, 5~ yrs ago. Ive spent roughly ~500$ repairing different things on it in that time putting on ~40k because they reused the same parts for this car across many different years and models which means CHEAP CHEAP. It means parts have been copied and mass reproduced on a scale that sees me paying $30 for a waterpump and ~1hr to install DIY on the side of the road not $600 ~ $2k labour for a moden car that requires half the car to be dissaembled to even just see the water pump. And since your modern pump is made of plastic, and all the pipes are plastic, and the pipes are have special numbers of propritiy fittings.... well yes, you see why modern cars suck in terms of investment ratio.

let me show you that math. ~2.5k outlay / 5yrs = ~500$ per year total cost. The car is now worth ~10-12k because people are so sick of modern cars and toyotas keep their value.

2nd hand, high milage, reliable cars (toyota/honda) > anything modern made in the last ~15yrs. The morphing from 1 or 2 modules per car, to 20-100 modules per car with tonnes more emmisions gear IMO is the worse thing to happen to cars since their inception. BUT it has given me a retirement plan ... im thinking about becoming a ECU/electronics repairer once i get sick of tech :D All those modules are pretty much the same, they just allow you todo things via comment instead of lever. Once you learn the basics, its like hacking on VB or JS.

weq··on Israeli group claims it’s using back channels to censor “inflammatory” content
Yet if the video sampled Metallica for too long, it would be removed and the feds at your door within minutes. Such is an algorithm that is tuned ad revenue and lawsuites, as opposed to protection. The above story just confirms what the scammers in this video say about youtube about wholesale content scamming with AI editing software.

weq··on Thousand People Were Convicted of Stealing over Decades It Was a Computer Glitch
LOL as a ex gov contractor all i can say is that only certain buisnessness of a certain size will get these types gov contracts, period. Why? Cause you cant sue a shit-poor company for a billion dollars. That pool isnt big.

Around the world, the largest companies get away with the largest wholesale frauds and keep getting work over and over, repeating the cycle, to this day. Every sector this applies too. I can only imagine the same thing happens in every developed country.

Im not saying that they are all junk, but i am saying that a smaller company with just as capable people and credentials would do the job for a 1/10th of the price and in most cases its gonna be fine. Thats how i got into the game, helping a small company who had a foot in the door replace a reporting system Accenture was charging the gov a 1m a report to produce. We won a contract and built a system for 1m that delivered reports at 5-20k a pop, in 1/10 of the time, with more data sources. But its rare to happen, people like that dont get to sit at the table for lunch with the people who matter often (unless they are retired or neighbours with someone) - and we all know thats really how deals get made. LOL at all these fake processes our govs put in place to appear like they select vendors fairly. LOL such an illusion.

But you know what, even though our democracies are corrupt like this, its nothing compared the dictatorships where they are corrupt and dont deliver anything of value. We are lucky it wasnt tofu-dreg accounting software that spies on you, crashes as well as getting your records wrong.

weq··on Samsung forecasts 85% drop in profit as chip sales falter
I learnt to work on cars because they are nessessary part of life and if you cant fix them your going to be paying that tax everyday of your life. Ditto with computers and software. You know what else has become a nessesity as we grow into a more technological dependant society, learning about electronics. Being able to indentitf circuts, components, debug and replace them. Check out learn electronics repair / northridgefix on youtube if you want to get started. Hardware and software are very similiar, they follow the same principles, they are all made in the same ways, and just as software uses libraries/packages, hardware often will look exactly the same in each device. I bought an assortment of 1000 tactile switches for $10 off ebay, and Ive fixed atleast 5 appliances in the last year with them (head torches, vacume, washer etc).

If you dont, your tax will be to be a victim of the companies profit stratergy of planned obselesance. My dyson for instance was perfectly fine, just a peice of plastic in the handle that required you to dissassemble the whole machine was cracked. It was literly a free fix with some plastic welding a screwdriver.

PS. You can buy universal kits that will control a washer or a dryer these days in a low tech way amoung many other devices we use daily. When your smart appliance fails, you can retrofit them.

PSS. Your software/hacker spirit should not be limited to a text editor!

weq··on Human-Like Browser Automation with GPT-4 Vision and MeiliSearch
i cant tell what this is supposed todo. alot of buzz words, but how does this this create tests for me? does it save me time because I dont have have to care about ids of elements on my page? Will it automatically use the page and create tests based on me decribing the workflow? Is it aimed at people who are automating systems they dont own? CAn it take a set of AC's and then create tests automatically for me?
weq··on Ketamine's effect on depression may hinge on hope
Only in the last 50 years have humans STOPPED tripping because of "saving the children". Before that, for 10s of thousands of years, humans, and animals, have used phsycoactive substances as a way of coping with and processing, reality.

Its such a dellusion that humanity has been "pure" at any point in time. Drug prohition, and all its tenticles, is a political tool of mass control. Nothing more, nothing less. Today we are seeing the reemergance of the teachings that have been passed down for generations by tribes around the world as this viel is lifted.

So please, this is not a trend. Its a rediscovery of aincent knowledge. I appreciate that low dose is how this remergence started, but there its not a cureall, and its not the only way this sustance provides benifits. 20 years ago, these same people were trapped to tables, eletroshocked until they became cataonic. Heroic doeses have their place in therapy.

weq··on About half of Bandcamp employees have been laid off
I used to leech Mp3's with the best of them, trawling through blogs enmasse before music was consolidated by giant aggregators. DI.FM is different though, its a streaming service, curated by humans (who are the worlds best DJs), has a sustainable buinsess model and lets you download streams.

Its very intersting how my music taste has evolved over the years, the more genres and types i was exposed to, the more i discovered. Nothing beats going to a concert you dont know anything about and having the night of your life. Im one for nostalgia, no doubt, but i think listening to the same song, in the same tone, over and over again, is a simplistic view of music and ruines its potential magic. Music and moods are instrinically linked. What happens if i was to listen to my favourite rockband, but instead mixed into chillout music that ebbs and flows over 5 or 10 hours. I get to hear the songs i love, in different ways, evoking different emotions and memories. I find that extends the life of music, not run it into the ground, dulling all those memories that triggered your love in the first place. I kissed that girl for the first time listening to this song, fades if you listen to that song everyday.

Spotify is automated radio, warts and all. Popular amoung the consumerist sheeple, often coupled with tv and shopping subscription technoligies. Society has always had this cross section of music interest, chinstroker outlets always existed at fringes, hardly able to survive in the world they helped create. Music sells. Captalists like to sell things people love to buy. A victim of their own success. Such is the harsh reality of this economic system, things just cant be done, they have to be done to death, then revamped and rebranded and the cycle goes on.

weq··on Florida men scammed more than $1M out of Uber Eats
Back in 1999, ordered a book from amazon, it took over 5 weeks, asked for a resend (cause i thought the package was lost), got a got a resend... then both books arrived.

When the scammer, attempts to scam a scammer, who is then scammed by a another scammer; which scammer wins? Which scammer is at fault?

weq··on Canada plans to regulate search and social media use of AI
You realise this government has done one of the biggests things in modern history in regularting cannabis? Lame duck, nah, every single country in the world is feeling these same problems; we had conversatives in AUstralia the last 15yrs (just imagine you harper gov didnt get kicked out, whats what we lived with) and our economy is EXACTLY the same.

Taking away party from the debate, and we see the similiarties in our situations. The world is run by corperations who have been yeilding value from the supply chain over the last 40years, creating record profits, concentrating record power, printing record money. THIS IS THE RESULT THAT. No single government of today is to blame, its the system of picking sides that creates collatoral for polticans to barter with coperations for things like censorship, monopolistic access to markets via in/action of laws, etc etc.

weq··on I'm Loud Quitting My Job Due to RTO Policy, Bad Company Culture
Goto work everyday at a job you dont like, driven by a culture you dont agree with.... but stay because you get payed blood money.

Behold the story of the capitalism and thoughts of the elites worldwide (eventually). They have all the money, but have no forfillment, no time to enjoy it, or dont even know how to enjoy anymore, even in early retirement.

The grind isnt as glamourise as the motivation porn you idolise. You spend your whole life looking for an answer in status, money and power - so even if it eventually comes, you know nothing else and get pleasure no other way.

weq··on Amazon used algorithm to test how much it could raise prices: FTC
My mum used todo this for Kmart back in the 90s. Each day should would goto competitors and write down their prices, report back, and the prices in kmart were adjusted.
weq··on Yann LeCun isn’t buying the AI doomer narrative
Your working for an Ad company, lets not overstate the importance here. Its like the bottom rung of being a techy, right next to finance. Next your going to say that 3M,Johnson & Johnson and Montasanto are "doing all they can". Even small wins right, token gestures of repentance? while execs laungh and continue to profit off the mass poisoning of our waterways & lives simply by influencing laws such that they can only be sued by one person/group at a time. Investor profit over all else, once you cut through the HR, is what it boils down too.

Not sure why people think its respectable to work as a propaganda piece for a corp covering its tracks. So many challanges there to solve, so many "smart" people dedicating their lives to making people want things they don't need. Sounds inspiring to be surrounded those types. Truely.

So innovative and cutting edge it is working for a giant ad company that we all know takes money from whoevers shell company offers it or whatever reason. Plausible deniability is the game at this level, just enough to paint a favourable picture in the court of court of law when the day eventually comes.

weq··on Experts fear crooks are cracking keys stolen in LastPass breach
I totally agree that Password managers lead to bad security practices. Yeh your a mhad dog for easily generating different complex passwords for every websites, but at the same time you paint a massive target on your head being part of the honey-hole.

Based on history, if you store a password in a obfuscated location on your computer, and you copy and paste it into every websites, its more secure then using a password manager in my opnion. Sure you wont be able to login to every secure websites from every device you have; but SHOULD you be? What is the price of that convience?

Repairing your car is just like programming, mechanics come in many varieties too.
