wenbert··on Return of the Mac
How is Apple doing it? Microsoft even did not get away with IE with Windows.
wenbert··on Return of the Mac
What about in laptops? I could easily find a laptop that is half the price of a Macbook Pro but with the same specs.
wenbert··on Return of the Mac
I wish they would sell Mac OS X that run on non-apple hardware. I would save so much money and love apple again.
wenbert··on Only 50% Of Twitter Messages Are In English
I am from the Philippines. All of my friends (in Twitter) speak in their dialects unless they want/intend something to be read by other people who only understand English.
wenbert··on Kaspersky CEO Wants End To Online Anonymity
It is very sad to hear that someone in his status says things like that.

I wonder how the employees at Kaspersky feel about his statement.

wenbert··on Starcraft 2 Beta launches -- Kiss your free time goodbye
I remember reading news that it doesn't have LAN play? Is this still true?
wenbert··on Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun free to download
FYI, if you remember, that chatroom for RA2 was in webchat.com #ra2

People like ASFM, Mr. President, others still go to that room.

wenbert··on Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun free to download
This is nice. I remember this game. I got interested into hacking and the web development because of this game!

I remember that for CnC games, you could just edit the .ini file and you could basically change everything in the game.

I ran a small fansite called Tiberian Sun Oracle -- back in the days, most people submit their sites to Yahoo Directories, etc. I also remember RADen, Battleground TS. I also remember using Newspro (later renamed Coranto) for the news management. Good old days.

The game was still under Westwood back then.

wenbert··on Ask HN: Can we recruit on HN if not YC-funded?
You already did. ;)

I think there should be no problem.

wenbert··on Ask HN: Would you go to Iraq for a year and be paid $200k?
I agree with you. I am assuming that he does not have kids yet? So do it for the experience.

I did a similar thing. I quit my job at a big company and right now I am in Norway for a few months.

I am from the Philippines and believe it or not, I just experienced my first snow a few weeks ago.

wenbert··on Ask HN: Database with country names down to the city, etc.
I have no idea what you mean by "google backwards".

Anyway, thanks! I keep an eye on this project.

wenbert··on Ask HN: Database with country names down to the city, etc.
Hehe. I am from Asia (Philippines), but in Norway right now for a short training. Things are a little bit unpredictable right now (schedule, etc.) for me but I find your project very interesting. It would be good if I can find something else to do since I have a few hours at night after the training.

Would be good if you can give me some more info about it.

wenbert··on Ask HN: Database with country names down to the city, etc.
I have found the link in HN: http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=530086
wenbert··on Ask HN: Database with country names down to the city, etc.
Thanks again! I will compare this with jacquesm's file.
wenbert··on Ask HN: Database with country names down to the city, etc.
Thanks! What about for updates? How do you regularly update your data?

LOL. It downloaded in about a minute. Nice server!

Again, thank you so much!

wenbert··on Poll: How many google searches do you do each day?
I use a lot of Google Chrome URL box search. I find it very convenient and now hate Firefox and Safari for using a different search box.

I still use Firefox for development though. But Chrome on almost everything else.

wenbert··on I made a native Python module for MS Word docx
Thanks for this. This will make other people's lives so much better. This is good for everyone.
wenbert··on Ask HN: Which is the best way to keep yourself organized
A notebook. I have a 8.5 x 11 notebook that suits my big handwriting. I use 1 page a day.

EDIT: Moleskines are too expensive for me.

wenbert··on Kiwi - A little javascript framework I wrote that saved me a lot of time
Initial thoughts: This filled a void for me. I have been looking for something like this for a while now. I have had problems with organizing my Javascript code.

I will definitely try this out when I get home tonight. For now, off to the beach!

Thanks!

wenbert··on How to Read Other People's Code -- And Why
That'd be the day :D Drawings for comments is absolutely a great idea. Sometimes I wish I could "draw" something in my code (Arrows, bookmarks, quick diagrams, etc. beside comments). Think github with this kind of feature.
wenbert··on AJAX PHPMyAdmin Alternative
I tried the GUI tools. But what I love about the web interface is the ability to CTRL + F anything on the page. And I can also "copy" any text I want in it.
wenbert··on How to Read Other People's Code -- And Why
Maybe it's just me. But sometimes I draw diagrams describing how the code will work and how the methods interact with each other. A quick drawing with a pencil and paper or on a whiteboard will do. It helps me understand how the over-all system works...
wenbert··on Apple releases new 27″ LED Cinema Display – comes with a free Mac
You are right to point out that on a 27" screen, you would have to sit farther away.

I am still on 10.4 though. One thing that bugs me is the size of the mouse cursor. It is too small for me -- I increase it and it all becomes jagged and ugly.

wenbert··on Apple releases new 27″ LED Cinema Display – comes with a free Mac
I use a 17" Macbook Pro. Generally the OS's font is okay. But when you are used to coding with fontsize 12, it becomes really small on my macbook. I use fontsize 13-14. It's big and looks really smooth.
wenbert··on “I made the first animated ‘under construction’ icon”
Do you also remember the days before Google? When we had to literally submit our sites to Yahoo's directory, etc.? Good old days :)
wenbert··on “I made the first animated ‘under construction’ icon”
Oh god I loved Server Side Includes. I ran a Tiberian Sun / Red Alert 2 site a years ago and had like 30-ish pages of content. Each had it's own navigation bar. Now imagine the time it took me update if I added a page or changed the navigation.

To make the long story short, I went to IRC (webmaster.com #ra2 - i think), people there introduced me to SSI. Then a few weeks later, they introduced me to Newspro (a few months/years later, it was renamed to Coranto).

wenbert··on Unit testing in Coders at Work
I strongly agree with this. The sad reality is that some of us have deadlines to meet. I think this is an option that makes sense. Writing testable code to get the job done and meet the deadline and the unit tests come in later when needed. EG: new features, bugs, etc.

Not a good practice and ideal but it is practical. IMHO

wenbert··on Ask HN: Javascript best practices?
I have been eyeing books for months now. Pro Javascript Techniques has been one of them. Living in a country where shipping costs as much as a book is hard.
wenbert··on IE6 Cheatsheet: How To Fix Internet Explorer 6 Bugs
In some cases this is impossible. I work for a company that uses a lot of internal applications that depend on old IE. Asking them to switch to Firefox is like asking them to shoot themselves in the head. A sad reality.
wenbert··on Movie Studios See a Threat in Growth of Redbox
It is not only the pricing but the availability. I think, here (Philippines), people buy pirated DVDs because the distribution is so wide-spread. So if you sell cheap and legit copies and people have to go all the way out to buy, then chances are that they won't.

With Redbox on the other hand, if it is available just around the corner or at least in places with security guards (less likely to be vandalized, etc.), then I'm pretty sure that the ones who sell illegal copies will go out of business in weeks.
