wellokpetejr··on Ask HN: Is shifting to an Apple iPhone worth?
For someone who knows what a file is, it looks like you made an uninformed decision. It’s well known that iPhone doesn’t allow for much customization.

Do schools give out iPhones? Never heard of that. I’ve seen them give out iPads and that’s because android tablets are trash. ChromeOS is decent enough.

> There's reason iphone is no 1 in us an nowere else: it has to do will limited access to education, so simpler devices are "best".

Oh, so Americans are dumb?

>In the rest of the world is about social signalling: I can afford it. If you had access to good education and you don't care about social signalling

LOL. Who is signaling now?

wellokpetejr··on Ask HN: Is shifting to an Apple iPhone worth?
Prioritize which features are important then look at the phones.
wellokpetejr··on Which Linux distribution has the best community?
No data to back it up, but from my noob experience, it’s Ubuntu. Google any Linux issue and add Ubuntu as a search term and you have a higher probability of finding a solution. If you look at GitHub repos, they will almost always have Ubuntu/Debian instructions.
wellokpetejr··on Why won’t some people pay for news?
What are the different ways? Like subscribing to their substack if they have one?
wellokpetejr··on Ask HN: Any advice on software marketing would be appreciated
Is SNS an acronym for social networking services? I’ve never heard of it before. Think replacing SNS with “social media” could help chrome users understand the purpose of the plugin.
wellokpetejr··on Ask HN: Do you talk to family and friends on the phone?
Way more video calls. Especially if you have kids.
wellokpetejr··on Fig (YC S20) – Adds IDE-style autocomplete to your existing terminal
Why lol?
wellokpetejr··on Ask HN: What do you do when your SaaS app is growing slower?
Some combo of all. What have you tried so far?
wellokpetejr··on Ask HN: Would you choose good pay or more interesting job?
Is anyone else dependent on you financially? Like partner or kids? If the answer is no, go to Portugal.
wellokpetejr··on On the lack of simple and reliable software to self-host a website
It seems like using a web hosting service that provides one click Wordpress installs would solve most of your problems. Plus there is no lock in. You can export all the content and import it into another Wordpress instance pretty easily.
wellokpetejr··on I stopped advertising and nothing happened
> In the end I decided the only real way to tell if what we were doing was working, was to turn it all off, for several months to see if there was a measurable difference.

This is how he should have started. It’s called incrementality. You have a control group with no ads and you compare against a group shown ads. Then you can measure lift.

This is Marketing 101.

wellokpetejr··on Show HN: Find companies with jobs using technologies you love
Tangent here, what are better solutions?
wellokpetejr··on Show HN: I made SUMPOST Newsroom – headlines dump, no algos, updated once a day
The list of sites you are pulling from would be helpful.
wellokpetejr··on Ask HN: Are del.icio.us style domain names not accepted at all?
It was cool when companies initially did that. Now? Does the average person even type in urls? They probably click on a link. Who cares what the URL is then.
wellokpetejr··on Ask HN: Good Alternatives to VS Code?
Emacs.

j/k

Not really though.

wellokpetejr··on Plain Text Sports – The day's sports in plain text
This is great.

Are there other plain text sites?

wellokpetejr··on Advertising, the Destroyer of Worlds
> Facts are of secondary importance; what really matters is bold statements expressed with complete confidence, especially if they are so imprecise and ambiguous that they can't be proven false on the spot.

LOL. As if this started with advertising recently. What changed is technology made it all ubiquitous.

wellokpetejr··on Ask HN: Why isn't computer programming a major part of the arts?
There is a lot of friction with programming. Picking a programming language, picking an IDE, learning concepts and syntax, googling the errors, etc.

Think of how a painter probably got introduced to painting. Parents or teachers gave them a paintbrush and paint and off they went. Immediate feedback and gratification.

Stuff like Swift Playground makes it easier to get into programming so progress is being made.

wellokpetejr··on Ask HN: Does AWS hire for the sole purpose of PIP’ing to boost URA?
Am I the only one who doesn’t know any of these acronyms?
wellokpetejr··on Techcommunitycalendar.com events week commencing 10th January 2022
Wish there as a RSS feed or someway to add events to a calendar.
wellokpetejr··on Bluemail
Is it me or is the privacy policy surprisingly not terrible?
wellokpetejr··on In the nation’s hospitals, this Covid wave is different
Healthy skepticism is fine, but if I’m skeptical of experts on anything novel, whose information am I supposed to trust? What is a better decision making process?

Don’t we have conflicting needs here? We don’t want scientists waiting for perfect information before providing guidance on a constantly evolving situation but then we are unhappy with the guidance they provide?

wellokpetejr··on In the nation’s hospitals, this Covid wave is different
I haven’t read the article because of the paywall.

Like most people I’ve spent thousands and thousands of hours getting good at something that employers pay me for. Outside of that, I’m no smarter at anything than any other person. And there is no way for me to spend thousands of hours learning what the best medical treatments are, how to make the best financial decision, the best way to raise kids, hire to work and manage teams remotely, etc.

The only way I can figure out how to deal with all the communications is to listen to experts. Why would I listen to anyone else who hasn’t the spent thousands of hours learning to be an expert? Obviously this doesn’t work perfectly all the time.

The problem seems to me we listen to our tribe/group/friends knowledge, even though the world has gotten too specialized for most of their ad hoc knowledge to be useful.

wellokpetejr··on How can you safeguard against programs like this one from Verizon?
VPN, use the Tor Browser or what I’ve been doing recently: run debloated Windows 10 in a VM + VPN.

If none of these work soon, I’m going to start firing up Windows instances on Azure or AWS and browse using them.

wellokpetejr··on A not so gentle intro to web3
I work in the web3/blockchain world.

And I don’t really care if any of it takes off. I have no interest in crypto or the politics surrounding all of this.

For me, it’s something new and interesting. It’s like the Wild West. It has some energy behind it.

Is most of it a scam? Sure. But will we learn anything from it? Hopefully. I think of it like Product Hunt. 99% of the projects will fail, but 100% of the people probably learned something useful.
