welder··on Ask HN: How much of OpenAI code is written by AI?
Estimates will always be off compared to a plugin like wakatime tracking the real amount of AI generated code vs human written code.
welder··on Can an email go 500 miles in 2025?
I thought this was about consolidation of email providers so your email never leaves a single datacenter:

"10 years ago we couldn't send an email 500 miles, but these days we can't send it 500 miles because it just routes internally."

Too bad, I think that would have been more interesting to read.

welder··on JavaScript Trademark Update
Renaming it on GitHub.com in this PR:

welder··on No One Is in Charge at the US Copyright Office
Patents are gatekeeping ideas. Two people come up with the same idea independently but one gets a patent and keeps the other from using their own idea.

Copyright is protecting from copy pasting the implementation of the idea.

welder··on Addictions Are Being Engineered
I'm not raising money to prevent this for my new social network.

welder··on No One Is in Charge at the US Copyright Office
You're confusing Copyright (implementation) with Patent (idea).

We don't like gatekeeping ideas because many people have the same ideas.

welder··on Websites are tracking you via browser fingerprinting
My app doesn't do that. The reason I push the app is because we don't ask for your email address, so the only way I have to notify you of new messages or stuff is via an app. Apps are sticky, websites aren't.
welder··on Google Cloud Incident Report – 2025-06-13
Go could learn from this and implement Swift's optional feature: https://wakatime.com/blog/48-go-desperately-needs-nil-safe-t...

welder··on How to Store Data on Paper?
If you want the data to last a long time, make sure to print on acid free paper.
welder··on Show HN: Tesseral – Open-Source Auth
I rolled my own auth [0] and it works just fine. Why do I need another service for Auth, it's simple enough already. I guess B2B products need more auth features so it's worth using a library?

welder··on Show HN: Job board aggregator for best paying remote SWE jobs in the U.S.
Yes, must be that and the remote aspect.
welder··on Show HN: Job board aggregator for best paying remote SWE jobs in the U.S.
Wow, salaries have gone DOWN since I last worked as IC!

Context: Was a senior SWE in SF for Airbnb until 2020. Now I'm seeing Principle engineer positions with lower base salary than I had 5 years ago.

You forgot "Building time tracking apps"

I'm seeing even more of this effect lately among young vibe coders. Not saying it's a bad thing, I'm saying:

It's reached the point where it's easier to build your own app than search/decide/choose an existing one.

welder··on Spaced repetition systems have gotten way better
Edit: nevermind
welder··on Ask HN: Cursor or Windsurf?
Neither? I'm surprised nobody has said it yet. I turned off AI autocomplete, and sometimes use the chat to debug or generate simple code but only when I prompt it to. Continuous autocomplete is just annoying and slows me down.
welder··on Doge software engineer's computer infected by info-stealing malware
This is different from haveibeenpawned leaks. These infostealer dumps mean the data is direct from a spyware/malware on a victims computer. for ex: https://hackerone.com/reports/3091909

It means the people in the leak had malware on their computer in the past, and maybe present.

welder··on Void: Open-source Cursor alternative
I bet OpenAI feels kinda silly now that they just paid $3B for Windsurf when they could have backed an OSS one for much less.
welder··on We fell out of love with Next.js and back in love with Ruby on Rails
I've used both and Drizzle has become the goto now in the TS community.
welder··on We fell out of love with Next.js and back in love with Ruby on Rails
Not anymore, now it's Drizzle
welder··on We fell out of love with Next.js and back in love with Ruby on Rails
The go-to is Drizzle
welder··on We fell out of love with Next.js and back in love with Ruby on Rails
Just eww... you were an expert at Rails 10+ years, failed to become an equivalent expert at Next.js so you went back to what you're used to. You just didn't dive in deep enough.

I was the same expert level with Python, now I'm using trpc, nextjs, drizzle, wakaq-ts, hosted on DO App Platform and you couldn't pay me enough to go back to Python, let alone the shitstorm mess that's every Rails app I've ever worked on.

I've also not seen the 1s Next.js pageloads you had, but I'm confident of figuring a fix if that becomes a problem.

welder··on I use zip bombs to protect my server
I like a similar trick, sending very large files hosted on external servers to malicious visitors using proxies. Usually those proxies charge by bandwidth, so it increases their costs.
welder··on Show HN: I built a tool to find devs based on code, not LinkedIn titles
Yes, the names and language stats are seen but the integration scope we use doesn't have permission to read the repo source code.
welder··on Show HN: I built a tool to find devs based on code, not LinkedIn titles
When connecting GitHub, it asks you to select the repos you want wonderful.dev to see. You can select private repos there too.
welder··on Show HN: I built a tool to find devs based on code, not LinkedIn titles
Similar to what I'm doing with https://wonderful.dev (example dev profile: https://wonderful.dev/alan) where profiles can't be edited, devs can only connect their GitHub, StackOverflow, etc. and we fill in the profile for them with real data. No more fake Linkedin skills.

This difference here is wonderful.dev adds points to skills based on repo stars. We take a dev's contributions to a repo, times that repo's stars, then assign those points to the repo's languages on the dev's profile. It's a proxy for impact by language.

welder··on I stopped using AI code editors
Same, always have copilot autocomplete turned off. I do use the chat, but rarely.

I was using it as docs but had to stop because it gives straight up wrong answers while sounding so confident. It's just faster to go directly to the docs or use Dash.app

welder··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (March 2025)
A social network for techies, https://wonderful.dev
welder··on One island, two worlds (Haiti vs. Dominican Republic)
I follow this guy https://www.instagram.com/sean_haiti

I'm in the DR right now and some locals are worried about the violence in Constanza spreading but most are just going about their lives. The DR is the least stressful country int he world after all.

welder··on Utah becomes first US state to ban fluoride in its water
Yes, one of the MANY cultural reasons. One less thing I have to think about when paying for food. There's honestly too many reasons to list: cost, safety, food, transportation, work life balance, education, being near family, and to see more of the world.
