weikju··on One Battle After Another: PTA and the Death of Revolutionary Cinema
Paul Thomas Anderson, not parents-teachers association. Had to read a bit till that became obvious
weikju··on F-Droid and Google’s developer registration decree
That makes a lot of sense. Unfortunate indeed that Google would be the sole arbiter of that “DNS”, but that explanation was pretty good

You can get stuff done without these.

weikju··on F-Droid and Google’s developer registration decree
This is addressed in the article as well, and while there's no technical reason they couldn't do this, it would break the licensing of the apps as well as the dangers of centralizations mentioned by a sibling reply.

> The F-Droid project cannot require that developers register their apps through Google, but at the same time, we cannot “take over” the application identifiers for the open-source apps we distribute, as that would effectively seize exclusive distribution rights to those applications.

Aside from the contradictory statements, I did address your points in my edit. I get the tradeoff. As long as whatever you do is in line with the providers of the services, and as long as you're ok with the surveillance, then sure... It's a tradeoff that MUST be considered and be aware of..

> I could not have created this without AI, cannot make progress without AI. When I use up my Pro account limits, I'm done for the day - I'm too slow without it for continuing to make sense.

And this is why untold billions are sunk into AI. Creates a dependency on their services and removes agency from end users.

Edit: yes I’m aware it adds agency in the sense that some people can do things they couldn’t do before… as long as that’s permitted/surveilles, which is where the agency is lost.

weikju··on Kagi News (iOS)
The LLMs do get it wrong once in a while though in their summaries. Mostly OK in my experience with Kagi Kite (this is an app version of kite.kagi.com)
weikju··on Kagi News (iOS)
Using AI in a way that doesn’t ruin their main products.
weikju··on Neovate Code Is Open Sourced
Probably straight from an LLM. Shouldn’t attempt to extract meaning out of it.
weikju··on Show HN: Coding Agents swarming your codebase
Totally not the same things as the original statement of updating a single dependency in a bunch of projects..

Sounds like someone forgot how to write shell one-liners, as well...

weikju··on Gemini in Chrome
Firefox/brave/orion/vivaldi/safari/librewolf/etc

Admittedly some of them have their own AI offerings but not as invasive and can actually be turned off.

weikju··on Linux phones are more important now than ever
In the case of my bank:

I had to enable secure auth to access some features. This works only with the mobile app, even when logging on the web I need the mobile app.

Some functions are available only in the app as well. Now I’m stuck with the app because I need those and needed secure auth to access those functions.

It’s evil but I has no choice (no choice of other banks either for reasons I won’t go into here, just accept it and don’t tell me to change banks. Other banks are no better anyway. )

weikju··on ChatGPT Sent Me to the ER
Same here. It's very similar to a lot of the "Apple Watch saved my life" stories/headlines.
weikju··on Jeena's Hyprland Demo
I second this. I first got exposed to this concept via the gnome extension, PaperWM. Now using Niri as well.
weikju··on Liquid Glass? That's what your M4 CPU is for
Written before any beta showed up.

Works fine on my M1 Macs sooooo whatever.

weikju··on Fed up with macOS – it downloaded 47 GB of 4K 240FPS screensavers. Asahi FTW
Except for all the issues running ARM, 16k page sizes (cuts out some flatpaks!), and the stuff that's not yet implemented like dispaly out on thunderbolt.
weikju··on Show HN: Hacker News em dash user leaderboard pre-ChatGPT
This site seems to be about identifying users who used emdash BEFORE ChatGPT was released, therefore identifying who is likely not ChatGPT despite using emdashes
weikju··on About Containers and VMs
I'll have to remember that one!
weikju··on About Containers and VMs
Don’t give them any ideas!!!
weikju··on About Containers and VMs
On incus/lxd is true there containers can only be Linux..

Not sure about the one app thing but that’s the general design of those ad well I suppose.

weikju··on Researchers find evidence of ChatGPT buzzwords turning up in everyday speech
I was always using those to present information on an easy to digest way and highlight important things.

The good thing is my emails still contain information not just content…

weikju··on Uncomfortable Questions About Android Developer Verification
Don’t worry, the PinePhone Pro is now EOL while the original one will go on for 2 more years!!!
weikju··on Google will allow only apps from verified developers to be installed on Android
Get rid of those pesky open source guys, keep the merchants who want $$$ and can pay $ to Google.
weikju··on From M1 MacBook to Arch Linux: A month-long experiment that became permanenent
Hyprland might change. Other apps that are installed or even compiled might go stale or change. The chaotic-aur in use might change or need replacing. Arch or upstream packages might make changes causing issues eg some recent issue with a session manager that broke a lot of installs.

Etc.

weikju··on The cost of interrupted work (2023)
This is what kills my days. Other interruptions from coworkers usually are on topic and it’s always a pleasure to help out.
weikju··on Warp sends a terminal session to LLM without user consent
> Wonder how being used feels like?

It’s a VC backed company. You should already know what it feels like

weikju··on All-In on Omarchy at 37signals
> Omarchy will have less development effort than macOS, their deployment system will have less development than Docker/Terraform/etc, and that's all a trade-off.

But… their deployement IS docker and terraform and etc. Their platform is Linux, nvim, etc. In total there is MORE development than all of apples platforms. It’s just not unified under one umbrella.

weikju··on All-In on Omarchy at 37signals
It does, by making waves about Linux and making Linux better over time.
