weezin··on Twitter lays off 30% of its talent acquisition team
True, but their hiring freeze was pretty close to the acquisition announcement. So I feel like that is partly to blame.
weezin··on Twitter lays off 30% of its talent acquisition team
I wonder how much of this is economy versus Elon wanting to instill the type of workforce he wants by replacing the cause at the source. Similar to how companies make no politics policies and then give people that don't like that a generous severance.
weezin··on Substack is laying off 14% of its staff
Yeah I think that is completely fair but the tweet states "If you’re a Twitter employee who’s considering resigning because you’re worried about Elon Musk pushing for less regulated speech… please do not come work here."
weezin··on Substack is laying off 14% of its staff
Substack's founders have been vocal about supporting free speech[0]. So it makes sense to me why they wouldn't want people holding the exact opposite views to the point of quitting.

weezin··on Supreme Court Overturns Roe vs. Wade
Then you have to create an amendment for abortion. Women's right to vote is explicitly given by the 19th amendment to the constitution. This is the basic function for the supreme court, states cannot impose laws that are unconstitutional.
weezin··on FDA to order Juul e-cigarettes off U.S. market
I didn't realize that the laws were changed somewhat recently. For your other point I certainly would have drank a lot more in HS if I was able to buy it myself or had friends that could.
weezin··on FDA to order Juul e-cigarettes off U.S. market
Teen vaping is a problem, but this seems like throwing the baby out with the bath water. Tobacco and nicotine products should take a similar approach to alcohol and increase the age to 21. This would help get the products out of high schools like it did for alcohol.

Removing e-cigs can hurt people that use them to get off cigarettes.

weezin··on Pending home sales declined 30.6 percent in May in California
And the fed expects the funds rate to go up to 3.4% by year end which assuming its not priced into the mortgage rate would put rates about 7.5% with a 3500 dollar payment. One thing also to note is how much prices would have to fall to get back to the 2100. For 6% and 7.5% a 500,000 dollar house would have to go to 350000 and 300000 respectively. This would basically flip new home buyers upside down.

weezin··on A conflict with a manager ended with me being disallowed to work at Spotify
Were there no retros? A lot of this stuff could have been addressed in retros. That being said I would not want to work with the person that wrote this blog. If you have issues address them separately with the manager not undermine the manager publicly repeatedly.
weezin··on Stop Interviewing with Leet Code
It definitely helps to look at solutions explained in detail, and probably has the best rate of return when tech company offers can differ in several hundred thousand dollars per year.

As far as hours of practice it really depends on if you grasp the concepts of types of questions. I got hired at a faang with 2 hard, 13 medium, and 20 easy questions done, but I'm for sure an outlier.

I also did these courses:

weezin··on Stop Interviewing with Leet Code
_Most_ of the people that complain about the hiring bar don't put in the effort to pass the hiring bar. That amount of effort depends on intelligence. Really smart people can quickly grasp the patterns of leetcode questions, but for someone less intelligent it requires a lot more studying therefore they are less likely to pass.
weezin··on Amazon consumer chief Dave Clark to join Flexport as its new CEO
Wow, I wonder how they got him to leave a 46 million per year job. I'm guessing a lot of equity..
weezin··on A cancer trial’s unexpected result: Remission in every patient
dodobirdlord's explanation is solid. Basically your link describes "generic" versions of a drug (aka a "brand" drug) with an expired patent. For new drugs they don't have competition like a normal market does because of these patents. To give a summary of the section of the course I linked the market forces for "brand" drugs is the willingness for payers (insurance companies/ governments) to pay.
weezin··on A cancer trial’s unexpected result: Remission in every patient
No, the prices for drugs don't follow the same fundamentals that a normal economic market does.

If you want to learn more about pricing in healthcare the "Pricing, Value, and Ethics" lectures for this course is really interesting.

weezin··on Janet Yellen admits she was wrong about inflation being transitory
I've been thinking recently. We are at near 4 years inflation in 1 year based on the fed's 2% gold standard. This question is mostly rhetorical, but is the target going to be negative to get us back on track? What do we do when we are this far off target, forgive and forget? I say mostly rhetorical because I think that rapid deflation would only be possible with an implosion.
weezin··on Janet Yellen admits she was wrong about inflation being transitory
Well, knowing I'm going to the desert I'm going to bring water. Just like how I eat before going to the airport because of the prices. That doesn't map to prescription drug prices, but it does for most things. What you described is more arbitrage than price gouging.
weezin··on Amazon investors nuke ethics overhaul and say yes to $212M CEO pay
And who was leading that effort? When executing, hard decisions get propagated to the top and leaders like Jassy have to make the toughest decisions that result in moving the trajectory of the company/project. This can create or destroy a lot of value.
weezin··on Amazon investors nuke ethics overhaul and say yes to $212M CEO pay
> CEO does not do $500M worth of work

The decision to make AWS created 100s of billions of dollars of value. CEO decisions can make and break companies.

> If there were no employees other than the CEO then the $500M doesn't get made.

Right, and if Tom Brady doesn't have receivers to throw to he doesn't win any super bowls. It is the leadership that can create massive amounts of value.

weezin··on Amazon investors nuke ethics overhaul and say yes to $212M CEO pay
I'm more pointing out that people don't rage against the machine like you are doing when an athlete signs a new contract.
weezin··on Amazon investors nuke ethics overhaul and say yes to $212M CEO pay
21 million per year, which wouldn't even make him a top 10 paid NFL quarterback and people are complaining about his pay for running one of the biggest companies in the world. If anything he is underpaid compared to other large tech company CEOs. People really just want to be outraged.
weezin··on The Texas electric grid can barely keep the lights on
True it depends where you are. Saying "its not even hot yet" is pretty ridiculous.
weezin··on The Texas electric grid can barely keep the lights on
Texas has been near 100 on multiple days already.
weezin··on Carvana laid off 2,500 employees today via a pre-recorded message through zoom
Yeah I don't get why people think being laid off via zoom is cruel. I'd think making a remote employee come in just to be fired would be more cruel.
weezin··on Study of pet dogs shows breed does not predict behaviour
> this is political dogma. there is a strain of dogma asserting that behavior is 100% nurture.

Unless it is sexuality, then it is 100% nature.

weezin··on Top US corporations raising prices on Americans even as profits surge
Realizing now I conflated quality of life with standard of living.
weezin··on Top US corporations raising prices on Americans even as profits surge
Thats not what I mean... I mean from a macro level increasing wages through something like a minimum wage. When you increase minimum wage, the new minimum wage becomes the new low wage and the quality of life goes back to where it was before through inflation.

edit: should be standard of living instead of quality of life.

weezin··on Top US corporations raising prices on Americans even as profits surge
It's fine, I actually wasn't expecting it to be a hot take or I would have explained my view better.

edit: I thought you said didn't. My point is that wages are correlated with inflation, and increasing wages does not increase quality of life.

weezin··on Top US corporations raising prices on Americans even as profits surge
Only one problem, mapping my statement to your example, Brian was thrown off the Eiffel Tower and Brian is dead. Now did Brian land in a net and die of other causes? I guess you have to argue without using random fallacies that don't apply.
weezin··on Top US corporations raising prices on Americans even as profits surge
> Yeah, because the US raising their minimum wage was the only significant thing to affect the World economy the last three years. /s

We didn't increase minimum wage, nor did I imply that..

Do you think wages aren't correlated with inflation? If so why?
