webtechgal··on Cloud9 Acquired by Amazon
Here is what TechCrunch says:

"Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed but we’re trying to find out. And we’ve also reached out to Amazon for a direct confirmation of the deal."

and

"Cloud9 had raised just over $5 million from investors that included Accel and Balderton..."

I checked a bit, but did not find even a hint of valuation anywhere... Would be interesting to know the deal value.
webtechgal··on Show HN: CLEAR Card – AI powered credit card for startups
The thread title - and the site tagline - say '... for startups', but I failed to find any specific relevance to startups.

Is there something I'm missing here?

webtechgal··on Ask HN: Single Person startup/company?
> How do you founders find an idea?

One simple way: Keep a sharp lookout for any difficulty you face while doing/using something - everything. The moment you hit a problem, think if you can find a way to improve it. Bingo!!

webtechgal··on Ask HN: Best platform to create a private community for 100-200 people?
'Best platform' is a very broad term. Best in what way? In terms of ease of creation/coding? In terms of features/stability/reliability/scalability? Or what?

Be that as it may, if you're willing to explore the CMS route, I can vouch for WordPress with BuddyPress (and a handful of other) plug-ins. Proven, stable, feature-rich, quick to deploy etc. I'd say definitely worth checking out.

webtechgal··on Show HN: Free and open source page builder for WordPress
> ...the content generated by Tailor is saved as HTML within the post (with a few exceptions for dynamic elements that use shortcodes)

So, does that means that if I don't use any of those shortcode-dependent elemensts, the pages/posts I build with Tailor will retain the full original design even when I disable (or altogether delete) the plug-in?

If so, you ARE my hero!!

(In case anyone is wondering why I would need to disable/delete the plug-in, the answer is speed/performance gain. With more and more people becoming aware of the site loading speed as one of the SEO factors and of tools like Google PageSpeed Insights/GTMetrix/Pingdom etc., I have been observing an increasing demand for loading speed optimization over the last year or so. IMO, the excessive importance people are attaching to the scores as reported by these services is blown a bit out of proportion, but that is possibly a topic for another thread.)

Sailing more or less in the same boat here. My weapon of choice has been the SiteOrigin Page Builder but I've found that in many/most cases, I end up doing at least some amount of css and/or even php/js/ajax level code customization, so eager to take Tailor for a test drive.

Great, congrats!!!

Providentially, I was in the process of landing a WordPress dev + SEO/SMO job just around the time you were posting this. I am going to work on this over the weekend and will most certainly give Tailor a try and hopefully, have some feedback for you early next week.

Edit: Thus far, I've been a big fan of the SiteOrigin Page Builder so it would be interesting to see how Tailor stacks up.

I'd say you're there already!! :-) All the best.

webtechgal··on Ask HN: Cheap dedicated hosting options for side projects
That's useful to know, but as mentioned in my original post, what I basically require is a dedi box and since Kimsufi is offering one with 500GB for under $10/mo., the Vultr offer won't make much commercial sense to me. Thanks anyway.
webtechgal··on Ask HN: What did your 'Show HN' project turn into?
Great site!!

Here is something you might want to look into:

I searched for 'money' and got the following by clicking one of the results (small photos):

https://www.pexels.com/photo/woman-girl-eyes-young-41526/

Now, this photo is tagged with the keyword money and it is completely relevant too, but if you scroll down on that page to Similar Photos, they are all woman/girl/eyes type, so it looks like your code is showing similar photos based on random/un-ordered matches with the tags of the current photo. Instead, if you show similar photos with tags matching the original search term the user has typed in, that would be a lot more relevant and useful. HTH and best wishes.

webtechgal··on Ask HN: What did your 'Show HN' project turn into?
That could cut both ways -

The sponsors whose content articles get blown up might get pissed with Google and take their ad spend elsewhere...

webtechgal··on Ask HN: What did your 'Show HN' project turn into?
Hey, that's a great app indeed!!!

For SEO/Traffic etc., here are some more ideas:

1. This is 2016 and I don't know what are you doing without ANY social media presence (at least, none that is visible on the site)? With the kind of service that you have there, LinkedIn and Twitter should work well. Insomuch as social signals is one of the SEO factors today, this would help SEO to some extent as well

2. Consider creating a blog section on the site and publishing relevant posts periodically

3. How about creating a widget/plug-in type functionality using which other sites can copy-paste some code to display a box saying something like: Generate a Great Company/Product/Domain Name, with the basic input features of your app and a Generate button and then, when users hit the button, they reach your site where the results/name suggestions are shown? With something like this, I am reasonably sure you should be able to interest at least some domain registrars and hosting companies to bite!!

HTH. I'll be happy to volunteer further/hands-on promotion/SEO/SMO work in case you're interested - let me know, and all the best.

webtechgal··on Ask HN: Cheap dedicated hosting options for side projects
Thanks for all this info. Just out of curiosity, when they offered the same config as your £12/mo box for £3/mo and refused to reduce your billing, could you not have simply bought the cheaper one, taken a snapshot of the existing server, transferred it over to the new one and discontinued the older one?
webtechgal··on Ask HN: Cheap dedicated hosting options for side projects
Mine are mainly experimental apps, so the data redundancy is not really that important, but yes, at some point in time, if the need arises, I can get another box like you said, and may be just rsync everything via a daily cron job or something I suppose.
webtechgal··on Ask HN: Cheap dedicated hosting options for side projects
Looks quite promising, and well within my price range (under $10) too. In fact, their Personal Range appears to be cheaper and config-wise superior to even Kimsufi!! I will surely check this out. @jagger27, for a WAHM from India, be it France/US/UK or whatever, they're all the same. :-)
webtechgal··on Ask HN: Cheap dedicated hosting options for side projects
So very true and I doubt if ANY service with such low costs would provide any support beyond hardware/network failure. However, speaking for myself, once I have the trusty ol' CentOS 6.7 and an ssh login, Barbara is my aunt, so this works for me. :-)
webtechgal··on Ask HN: Cheap dedicated hosting options for side projects
The sites/apps will be writing (as well as reading) ALL the time... One of them is a (proprietary) web crawler that will crawl and archive certain types of web resources. (Mainly RSS/XML feeds). Then, another one will crawl/archive URLs, take a screen shot of the URLs too and store them as gif/jpeg/png files.

Wow!! I actually have a 20GB instance with Time4VPS, that I had found via an ad on LowEndTalk last year. I think I paid some Euro 9 or something for the WHOLE YEAR!! Other than an annoying glitch that causes the space allocation to drop down to 10GB instead of 20GB at random, it has been working quite well too.

However, I didn't know they had had the 1TB offer - I'll put in a ticket there asking them to let me know if/when it comes up again. Thanks for the info.

webtechgal··on Ask HN: Cheap dedicated hosting options for side projects
Wow!!! DO being a favorite of mine, I will definitely try to explore this. My concern, however, is what about the bandwidth between DO and Backblaze? How would that count/work?
webtechgal··on Ask HN: Cheap dedicated hosting options for side projects
That's great, thanks!! How about uptime and support/response issues? Of course, I am not expecting any fancy support for < $10/mo., but just to know, have you had any issues and 1st-hand experiences?
webtechgal··on Ask HN: Cheap dedicated hosting options for side projects
Thanks, yes, I actually found them via OVH only, but SO much cheaper than OVH!! The configs offered are much inferior, but okay for my requirements.
webtechgal··on Ask HN: Cheap dedicated hosting options for side projects
Thanks. S3 would work fine for me (from a tech perspective), but the question is, would it offer ~500 GB storage for under $10/mo?
webtechgal··on Ask HN: Cheap dedicated hosting options for side projects
Thanks - I will check that out, though I seriously doubt if they would be offering anything like a dedi box with 500GB drive for less than $10/mo...

This IS a brilliant idea!!

Yes, I have experienced this several times before.

You can check my comments on this recent thread for a somewhat more detailed account of my observations:

I migrated a droplet from Singapore to Bangalore on the 12th. It hosts a site that was averaging ~ 15k page views per day, predominantly Indian traffic (banking recruitment guide). Since then, the traffic has been rising steadily and yesterday crossed an all-time high of 26k page views. (No other changes made to the site)
