webo··on The vital art of talking to strangers
Is that much different than chat rooms or Omegle?
webo··on Kazakhstan’s forest is the birthplace of modern apples
Slight correction - ‘ata’ means either father or grandfather (father of apples). The city was known to have a lot of apple trees in the surrounding mountains.
webo··on Show HN: Simple way to access various statistics in Git repository
You're making very wild and invalid projections here.
webo··on Auth0 Down
The Okta effect?
webo··on Auth0 Down
Their own app is down too https://manage.auth0.com/
webo··on ClickHouse as an alternative to Elasticsearch for log storage and analysis
Hi, not really because my understanding is bigquery requires structured data but Stackdriver just expects a arbitrary json payload which can be queried from. Do you have any experience?
webo··on ClickHouse as an alternative to Elasticsearch for log storage and analysis
Have you looked into Google Cloud Logging (Stackdriver)? It's the most affordable and decent-enough solution we've found. The only issue is querying can be slow on large volumes.
webo··on Google Cloud vs. AWS Onboarding Comparison
Is paying extra 3-10% of your already expensive invoice worth the premium support that you _might_ need? Not sure I would consider that customer obsession... more like insurance.

webo··on Show HN: I built an online interactive course that helps you learn Vim faster
For me, it's mostly the key bindings rather than the program itself. I use vim key bindings on whatever the latest $editor is rather than learning its keyboard navigation. I got introduced to vim very early on though.
webo··on AWS UI
I can't seem to find a link to the actual codebase? Good to see AWS console finally moving away from angular 1.
webo··on Ask HN: Does your employer want you to state pronouns in email signature?
I guess that makes sense if it’s only for surface level addressing. I wasn’t sure if it’s supposed to be a deeper identity signal.
webo··on Ask HN: Does your employer want you to state pronouns in email signature?
I’ve seen this forced at larger companies and Universities. I’m neutral on the topic of stating pronouns — could somebody with more knowledge explain the difference between including pronouns and age/sex/race/religion/ethnicity?

From my understanding, usage of pronouns is about not making any assumptions and being inclusive. So I’m just not sure what or where the line is.

webo··on Fair-Code Automation with n8n.io
Hi, I really don’t want to sound lazy but might as well ask the creator: where does n8n cloud fit compared to Pipedream or Autocode? I use pipedream a lot but curious if n8n is an alternative or solves something else.
webo··on Amazon Managed Service for Prometheus
I like Weave Cloud’s Prometheus hosting model — it’s per host, which is predictable and forecastable.
webo··on TimescaleDB vs. Amazon Timestream
Curious why not use Timescale Cloud?
webo··on A guide to live chat tools for startups
Once you incorporate your systems and teams workflows around a specific system, it’s hard to justify a migration to another system. Most companies (like ours) just eat the cost at that point.
webo··on A guide to live chat tools for startups
Our company recently "graduated" from Intercom's early-stage program. Intercom is a mediocre product but their pricing does not make sense whatsoever. I exchanged about 20 emails (while being very slow) with their account rep only to find out even they don't understand their own pricing.

Here's some hot mess that's going on:

  * They A/B test their pricing page with completely different models. I've seen at least 3 different versions.
  * They charge by "active users" over last 90 days. A person is considered active if they've logged in to the site or was sent an email.
  * The pricing for products and add-ons are all over the place. In some places, they have an add-on listed as $199 (Product Tour) while others places have it as $119.
  * They try different "bundle" packages but yet it's impossible to tell what products or add-ons are actually included in each.
webo··on Why I stopped reading HN (2010)
I noticed the algolia search is not very good and doesn’t go back as far. I think it limits results to 6 years or so.
webo··on New ‘Meow’ attack has deleted almost 4k unsecured databases
Who do you think should regulate the “public”? ISPs, police, government?
webo··on Amazon met with startups about investing, then launched competing products
DO doesn't have a great track record for customer trust. I run personal workload but couldn't recommend it over AWS to a larger company.

webo··on Recently minted database technologies that I find intriguing
I prefer it. Too many clickbait titles otherwise.
webo··on Zoom closes account of U.S.-based Chinese activist after Tiananmen event
I’m not sure if Zoom has an app for Teams but on Slack we just start a call with `/zoom`
webo··on The software industry's greatest sin: hiring
I’ve done over a hundred technical interviews in the past 5 years. You can tell a lot about someone by quickly glancing over a project source code, comments, documentation, automation, etc vs talking to them for an hour or two. (to be clear I’m not talking about live coding or take-home problems)

There are bunch of people who can sound smart by just referencing stuff they read online or in the books.

I don’t focus on specific technologies or frameworks because everyone has different backgrounds. However I do focus on CS fundamentals and software engineering practices. These don’t say much about actual coding skills.

webo··on Show HN: Zoom Redirector
Isn’t BlueJeans just a wrapper around zoom?
webo··on GitHub shuts off access to Aurelia repository, citing trade sanctions
Code search, access permissions, code owners, 3rd party integrations?
webo··on Our Experience with Stripe Atlas
Thanks Patrick.
webo··on Our Experience with Stripe Atlas
Does anybody know if there’s a strict requirement to use Stripe’s payment processing when part of Atlas? Or can you still use Adyen, authorize.net and the like?
webo··on Ask HN: What's the best corporate password manager?
It’s not very trivial to gain access to a 1password account:

1. Attacker needs access to the physical device of the account holder if they know the credentials.

2. Otherwise, they need to know credentials + secret key on a new device.

3. You can set up Google Auth to access the account in the first place, which can have its own separate 2fa (this is what we do)

webo··on Building an AI to predict human age from a blood sample
I don’t know if you’re the OP but I didn’t mean it in a negative way. This is extremely well written and researched, better than most graduate student writings yet alone non-academics.
