webgambit··on Full Writeup of the Windows GDID
Couple questions:

1) Do we think this is actually how the FBI found this kid or is this simply what they're saying in order to keep some other tool hidden?

2) Is there a way to block or manually change the GDID from being revealed. If it's the browser leaking it, do all browsers leak it?

webgambit··on Tell HN: I have the perfect job, why is it not enough?
And it doesn't have to be something super difficult. I realized after my divorce a decade ago that due to all the hours I had spent working I was a bit of a shit dad and didn't really have a great relationship with my kids.

One of the best things I did was started a "family game night" every week. Bought a handful of board games and each Saturday we'd sit down with pizza and games. No cellphones at the table. It was a huge success for us. It allowed us to learn new things together and it helped build a foundation for us all to grow from. Even now with all but one of my kids grown, when we get together games are brought out and we have a blast. Nowadays I'm teaching my grandson to play some simple ones and can't wait for him to join in.

webgambit··on Ask HN: What API to the physical world do you wish existed?
I want an API to tap into time itself. Eventually, I'd want to be able to travel through it, but in the beta I'd settle for just the ability to pause it whenever I like. :)

webgambit··on Ask HN: Is this a feasible business idea?
You're right, it's situations like that which brought up this idea. Some way to reliably document a statement or idea and the date just seems like a useful service.

The notarization would be a bit difficult since each state has their own rules and laws. Additionally, I think they all have a residency requirements, at least the two states I've been a notary in did.

webgambit··on Ask HN: Is this a feasible business idea?
That's an interesting idea that I hadn't considered. Thanks.
webgambit··on Ask HN: Is this a feasible business idea?
But can't the time and dates can be changed those.

As for recording phone calls, the laws vary from state to state. The states I have experience with only require one person on the conversation to be aware that it's being recorded.

webgambit··on Ask HN: What books are you reading
Audiobook: I just finished Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson. I highly recommend it if you're into fantasy type novels. It has a unique magic system and is very well written. I've been off and on with War and Peace for a while. Kind of dry so far.

Kindle: The Law by Frederic Bastiat, extremely good book describing the fundamental purpose of law and government.

Dead Tree: Essence of Discrete Mathematics by Neville Dean, seems to be pretty good book, just haven't devoted enough time to reading it.

webgambit··on USPS sees $8.5 billion loss, warns Congress it'll be broke by 2011
> As for legal documents, those are all based on the standard work week as well, so that argument falls as well.

No, it doesn't. Quite a few legal documents are signed on Saturdays and then overnighted back so that the sender can have it back by Monday.

> 2) Reduce delivery to 3 days a week. Would anyone complain about this? How many people even check their mail every single day without fail?

If my own sphere of influence, I only know 1 person who _doesn't_ check their mail daily.

webgambit··on Ask HN: What martial arts do you practice? What do you recommend?
The best piece of advice I can give is to stay away from McDojo type places. You know the ones. Usually franchises, instructor's with questionable lineage, 'clubs' that will take you from nothing to black belt for a set fee, etc. One in particular has added several new belts in my lifetime just to keep people longer. Some teach their own version of an art, so what you learn won't transfer if you ever move.

Some forums were already suggested. If you're interested in learning about traditional martial arts I highly recommend http://www.karate-budo.com/. It's a small forum and they don't approve everyone (or, they didn't when I joined; not sure now). But the people there are serious about their martial arts.

Others have mentioned researching the schools. I'd recommend researching the Sensei. Find out who he trained under and research that person as well.

My $.02 worth.

webgambit··on Ask HN: How does having a baby change your life?
I have four daughters ages 4 to 14 and the one thing, without a doubt, that kids did for me was that they help me to slow down and appreciate the little things in life. If it wasn't for a my daughters (and my wife, to a lesser extent) I'd probably do nothing but work and sleep. But they keep me grounded in the rest of the world. And something as simple as a few minutes watching a show or playing a game together brings me more joy than it ever did before I had them.

As for you questions; yeah, it'll can change your priorities, inspire you to do more or do different. And, as you can see in the rest of the comments, having a baby instantly requires everyone to give all the advice they wished someone had given them.

My advice, ignore 99.9% of what everyone tells you. Doing that is what kept my wife and I sane.

webgambit··on Ask HN: MarriageLaughs.com
Hmm... I hadn't really thought about the non-pg issue. Not sure how to handle that. Let me think on that.
webgambit··on Ask HN: MarriageLaughs.com
I'm hoping that posting here would help with #1.

On #2... maybe I can throw some color in the 'Submit your story' block in the top right. It's already set to accept anonymous stories.

Thanks for pointing out the issue on the contact page. It has been fixed.

webgambit··on Ask HN: What are you working on right now?
Day Job: custom erp type system for manufacturing/aviation

Startup: personal finance/buget webapp... with a twist.

webgambit··on Ask HN: Web app where hourly employees can "clock in"?
We use http://timetrex.com/. I think they may have a hosted solution.
webgambit··on Ask HN: Tools of the trade, 2010 edition
+1 for freshbooks. Met some of the team a little over a year ago. Great group of folks.
webgambit··on Ask HN: How can startups using Yodlee afford it?
I've been in touch with Yodlee recently as well. I'm going to call them back today to clarify, but it was my understanding that the fee was per user account not user. Meaning if John Doe signs up and has 3 credit cards and 2 banks, that's 5 user accounts. Hopefully I'm wrong on this.
webgambit··on Ask HN: how to get "real" contracting gigs
Personally, I started off with the 'real' clients and then moved on to the position you find yourself in. Personally, the real client's weren't worth the effort. Once I had a good relationship with a few shops, I didn't have to bother with any more marketing and sales thus freeing me up to do billable work.

Of course, this was better for me b/c I hate doing sales. YMMV.

What did surprise me was that when I changed it from gov to mil there were only 7 results. Expected more from the military. ;)
webgambit··on Ask HN: Would you play a distributed, programmable MMO?
I'd be up for giving it a shot.
webgambit··on Please update your emergency contact information.
As a former police officer, I highly advocate having an ICE contact in your phone. It really can make a huge difference.

That said, it doesn't do a lick of good to have an ICE contact set up if, when the first responder picks up your phone, it asks for a password to get into it. It's one of those cases where you need to weigh the balance on convenience vs security.

webgambit··on Ask HN: next big site in the social network niche?
It's true that getting your sphere of influence to adopt a new social network is a pain. But that said, years ago I started off on Friendster, then moved to MySpace, and now I'm at Facebook. I would expect that Facebook's fame will cool just like the others did. Surely Facebook isn't as untouchable as Google is in the search market. Is it?
