The closest comparison I can think of how I see it is like Brandon Lee’s The Crow, which is also still one of the most badass films ever made.
Everything sits behind application load balancer and API gateway, all basic stuff
We have about 100 boxes, but basically only 3 “environments” for our distributed monolith. Every box in a distinct environment is provisioned and configured in exactly the same way.
need to change some config? It’s at most a few extra clicks to do it in multiple environments. Then EB handles the rolling deployments and health check failover stuff. It’s very hands off, with another small benefit of not needing to bother with fudging around with terraform state, wasting compute on building containers and paying for registry storage.
We went even further than that and ditched kubernetes, and containers altogether and moved everything to just EC2/elastic beanstalk.
Took us 2 months to write everything in terraform initially. Took 2 days to shift everything back and maintenance is just so much easier for us. Much easier to find people that can manage infra this way too.
To this day I struggle to find a tangible benefit to the old stack. Everything is just “better” now and half the cost.
YMMV of course.
Then again, I don’t keep anything valuable on my internet connected computers - and if I’m suspicious of even a little thing I just wipe the PC and restore from image.
Haven’t run any antivirus software in over a decade and haven’t had a single problem.
You put .LOG at the top of the new file with a return. Save and close the file.
Every time you reopen the file, the timestamp is append to the file. Add your notes, save, exit notepad. Open it again when you need to update, rinse and repeat.
Nothing I’ve ever tried has been more effective than just keeping this endless file.
Then the CTO left, and was never replaced, then the layoffs came and a competent PM was replaced with a junior. Entire design department replaced with a single junior as well. Engineering gutted. Ok, lay-offs happen but at least I still have a job.
Then came “we’re waterfall now”. You know what didn’t come with it? Actual planning, documentation or specs or anything typical of “waterfall”. Estimates are now guessed before anything is defined and turned into commitments. You know what we still had? “Daily stand ups”, “backlog grooming”, two week “sprints”, and no retrospectives. No opportunity or agency to try to make things better - just endlessly stuck in my own personal hell.
Now we have projects that are supposed to take 2 months now taking 6. We have last minute spec changes that require massive rewrites because UAT isn’t done until the end of the entire project. “PM is slow to write out requirements” so we’re basically expected to just guess what they are based on very small selection of unfinished design flows.
And of course, executive wonders “why does engineering take so long to deliver”.
I started calling this “scrumerfall” or even ”fragile”. It’s basically the worst of both with none of the positives.
I don’t know what point I’m actually trying to make…just get like ranting and this seemed like a good time lol
They banned a bunch of sport shooting and hunting guns because they look “scary” when criminals largely use handguns to commit crime.
Licensed gun owners in Canada are statistically the least likely people out of all to commit crime of any kind (let alone gun crime), as they are background checked every day. Let alone the fact that criminals use illegal black market handguns smuggled from the US to commit the majority of gun crime and won’t have a firearms license.
And no, money is not stolen because they never had my money to begin with
I get asked about it all the time in interviews.
I just respond “I’m under NDA”.
I also get asked about GitHub profiles. I have a pseudonym on GitHub, and maintain a few projects. I dont divulge that information either.
“I’m under NDA” or “I only work in proprietary code with many trade secrets involved so I can’t”
I’ve probably been screened out of plenty of processes just for that, but I don’t care. I’ve been doing pretty good for myself without making my life an open book.
M1 with 16gb of memory vs 16 vcpu Xeon with 128g, my laptop absolutey trounces it.
