weaksauce··on What About Rails?
vary similar processes. vibe code/vibe create a presentation. he also knew what "shape the graph should look like" but still had errors in his powerpoint. if you can't trust it with a powerpoint i'm not sure why you can trust it for other low stakes things.
weaksauce··on The Test
billionaires are a flaw in the system. it's an obscene amount of wealth for one person to have. A million is a lot for most people but a billion is 1000 of those.
weaksauce··on What About Rails?
dhh did just what you did and apparently made a bunch of mistakes in his powerpoints.
weaksauce··on I said no and Apple said yes
that's really ignoring two big points. 1. windows and macs don't "just work" either... they have their fair share of pain points that you have to accept and/or workaround. 2. linux is different than windows and is different than macos in the sense that you've spent a long time learning the quirks of windows and macos and have the fixes mostly ready. once you learn the quirks of linux it's basically the same.

After the learning curve of linux desktop(well kde) it's basically the same as macos for me and for most people that would use it. most of the computing is done in the browser and that's basically the same experience in any os.

weaksauce··on Small programming tricks
if you enable history substring search in zsh you can get that feature anywhere in the command and not just the start. it's very useful if you remember some snippet of the command like it had the word debug in it etc. in fish that is built in and on by default.

though one function that i recently added will narrow your history down based on a space separated set of filters which i found useful

    function hgrep
        set -l cmd history
        for pattern in $argv
            set cmd "$cmd | grep -- "(string escape "$pattern")
        end
        eval $cmd | cat
    end
use `hgrep ruby debug foo` would filter for a line that contained all the words ruby, debug and foo.

do you have any kind of succession plan in place in case you get incapacitated for one reason or another? anyone you trust enough for that?
weaksauce··on NTSB issues investigative update on B-767 runway excursion accident in Miami
> This exact thing could happen 20 times with everything turning up relatively ok and we only heard about it because they didn’t make that final call correctly either

This concept is called normalization of deviance and is the cause of a lot of accidents in aviation and other fields.

mind you those numbers are seconds until the cvr stopped recording. they were a few hundred feet from the end of the runway when they initiated the go around and like the other poster said the turbines do take time to spool up from idle. they were so far out of normal spec for landing that it was absolutely pilot fault but not at the far end of the runway. they were not stabilized on approach way further back about 5 min or so. (if you're not stabilized on approach you are required to go around). they even called for flaps 30 halfway down the runway which is also not allowed for a stabilized approach.

firefox has a setting on ios version that blocks ads so maybe they will get more market share that way?
weaksauce··on Omarchy: Any User Process Can Escalate to Root
if you reset the keyboard shortcuts to their defaults and install toshy you can get the ctrl-a/e stuff and copy and paste in the command line with cmd-c/v and a lot of the other mac like keyboard shortcuts. it's really plug and play and works well... can't recommend it enough. (though there are some edge cases that may require some tweaks but overall it's great)

weaksauce··on Engineered yeast for converting plastic and biomass compounds to food additives
there was a time in history before fungus came along and ate trees so there were just a huge amount of trees around that couldn't decay. (which is why we have coal actually) this could be something akin to that.
weaksauce··on Anna's Archive Owes $340 Million, Lost Several Domains, but It's Still Online
Exactly. if AI gets a pass on stealing all of the world's information and gets a pass why shouldn't we get to enjoy the same benefits?
weaksauce··on There's no reason for software to be slow anymore
linux without the proprietary nvidia drivers is slower than the proprietary ones. try switching to them if you can. either way nvidia is worse on linux than amd.

weaksauce··on The weekend is 100 years old
it wasn't much more than 50 years ago before being able to go to the ER to be saved in an emergency in the us was a right without having to show proof of payment/insurance.

a lot of what we take for granted are very recent things.

weaksauce··on Illinois Just Passed a Law That Puts Linux on the Hook for Age Verification
i mean with the rise of flock ad campaigns of "think of the children" and them installing platereaders all over the place this kind of thing is something that people want to capitalize on and make a buck. i can definitely see the lobbying pushing for more and more invasive versions of this.
weaksauce··on Illinois just passed a law that puts Linux on the hook for age verification
that is the start of a lot of bills like this... they really only ever increase in scope and invasiveness.
weaksauce··on As a Windows user, it's a surreal way to install a program
> came with the tradeoff of not cleanly _uninstalling_ software either. config files etc were always left over.

That's no different than windows or linux. The uninstallers leave configuration bits all over the place be it in the registry or config folders.

the original Myst was created using HyperCard... which in and of itself is a crazy app with a huge impact on gaming in general.
weaksauce··on America, 1926: A forgotten 100-year-old report
I was speaking in general terms of the trend that spanned a long time and not to the rapid lefward swing in a few recent elections of a few candidates... the general trend of the party went rightward even if there are outliers. those elections were a reaction to how disastrous the republicans have been these past two years.
weaksauce··on America, 1926: A forgotten 100-year-old report
> Also, the Democrat party has steadily moved leftwards over time.

the only way someone thinks this is if they have fox news blaring all day every day. the dems keep moving rightward step by step to appeal to "moderates" while the right wing keep moving the overton window even further right.

weaksauce··on The Egg Bandits Made a Thousand Times the Fine They Just Paid for Price Fixing
yeah, I'm in agreement with you. other crimes the ill gotten gains are taken back and additional penalties are levied against the perpetrator. just saying why should these crimes be treated any different?
weaksauce··on The Egg Bandits Made a Thousand Times the Fine They Just Paid for Price Fixing
In any other crime you get caught doing you do not get the benefits of the ill gotten gains. why should this be any different?
weaksauce··on Since Linux 6.9, LUKS suspend stopped wiping disk-encryption keys from memory
> The point being made is: If one isn't re-entering their passphrase after suspend, how are they surprised that the encryption keys are somewhere in memory during suspend?

If that was the case for the people using the debian extra secure extension that should have wiped the memory clean then someone would have found this bug much earlier than two years. Their password was required to be re-entered even though the key was still in memory somewhere.

weaksauce··on The AI industry is pouring millions into US elections
The thing that stuck with me is the awful reasoning by the judge: "Judge rules Fenwick Island's corporate voting does not dilute human votes"

How could corporations voting not dilute the human votes by the very nature and reason of voting in the first place?
