weaksauce··on Grok Code Fast 1
i’d love to switch to linux as a daily driver but the mac cmd shortcuts for text editing and the general well thought out text editing in the system make macos more compelling. i’d love to switch over for gaming on the windows computer but the lack of performance for comparable specs hurts it. drivers are very important.

ive seen some that change it for copy and paste but i don’t think it works for cmd-left right up down. or option those.

> Briefly stated, the Gell-Mann Amnesia effect is as follows. You open the newspaper to an article on some subject you know well. In Murray’s case, physics. In mine, show business. You read the article and see the journalist has absolutely no understanding of either the facts or the issues. Often, the article is so wrong it actually presents the story backward — reversing cause and effect. I call these the “wet streets cause rain” stories. Paper’s full of them.

> In any case, you read with exasperation or amusement the multiple errors in a story, and then turn the page to national or international affairs, and read as if the rest of the newspaper was somehow more accurate about Palestine than the baloney you just read. You turn the page, and forget what you know.

basically that and the knoll's law on media accuracy:

> Knoll’s law of media accuracy is the adage that “everything you read in the newspapers is absolutely true, except for the rare story of which you happen to have firsthand knowledge”.

weaksauce··on Show HN: Base, an SQLite database editor for macOS
not as slick as this tool but https://dbeaver.io/ handles duckdb databases as well as a myriad of others.
weaksauce··on AI crawlers, fetchers are blowing up websites; Meta, OpenAI are worst offenders
here's one example using rack attack on a rails app:

https://github.com/pinballmap/pbm/blob/302ac638850711878ac61...

but it only bans for 3 hours. if they don't respect the hidden link and robots.txt they get banned.

weaksauce··on AI crawlers, fetchers are blowing up websites; Meta, OpenAI are worst offenders
put a honeypot link in your site that only robots will hit because it’s hidden. make sure it’s not in robots.txt or ban it if you can in robots.txt. setup a rule that any ip that hits that link will get a 1 day ban in your fail2ban or the like.

cs skins are pulling in a billion a year nowadays.
weaksauce··on Usage – a shell completion / manpage / help documentation generator
From one of the creators of mise is this little utility that can help make a bunch of documentation and shell completions for most shells.
weaksauce··on Installing a mini-split AC in a Brooklyn apartment
they had a unit that uses resistive heating if it gets too cold instead of the heat pump which adds up in the cold ny winters I'd gather.

the DIY youtubers also know they will get a thorough drubbing in the comment section and may even lose subscribers if they do it to a poor level. the incentives for shortcuts on a job site by a worker are to get the job done(good enough for a layperson) and leave.
weaksauce··on Little-known leguminous plant can increase beef production by 60% (2022)
the other people are right that there is crazy data collection and optimization from them... however blind spots can exist and outliers could be possible in that kind of environment.
weaksauce··on Private sector lost 33k jobs, badly missing expectations of 100k increase
two small companies i used to work for used adp.
weaksauce··on -2000 Lines of code (2004)
it’s just graph theory nomenclature. if you study an intro to graph algorithms it would get you most of the way there.
weaksauce··on US Congress is making more than 250M acres of public lands available for sale
> I just wish that folk like Wilderness Society were a bit more clear on what to expect.

that just means the stuff that is easier to access is going to be prioritized. there's already 17+ classic rock climbing destinations that are in the proposed areas which could be sold off to his cronies. nobody is going to be buying up the land in the middle of nowhere with no access to it. this is devastating regardless of the absolute percentage.

weaksauce··on My iPhone 8 Refuses to Die: Now It's a Solar-Powered Vision OCR Server
is there a reason to be wary of sidestore? first time i've heard of that but seems like a legit opensource project. doesn't seem like it would be a project that is all that lucrative for bad actors... people that don't want to pay $99/year to load apps on their personal iphones/ipads doesn't seem like a big score.
weaksauce··on End of 10: Upgrade your old Windows 10 computer to Linux
looks like it’s not just for fedora either. though that is still a little more complicated than an all in one ubuntu/mint/whatever installer. maybe someone should fork it and/or add that to this.
weaksauce··on Washington Post's Privacy Tip: Stop Using Chrome, Delete Meta Apps (and Yandex)
they don't load up the ads at all so they can't know your information in the first place at least from the ads themselves. if the website is sharing information directly there's nothing you can do outside of some kind of vpn and never logging on to any services.
weaksauce··on Root shell on a credit card terminal
unless it's changed recently that only applies to tap and chip payments (which you should always prefer to avoid card skimmers) and not the old slide the ~~barcode~~ magnetic strip kinda payment.

orange county is still pretty liberal just not quite as liberal as the other parts. huntington beach and newport beach is not all of orange.

if it’s anything like wells fargo 8 million fine for opening up bank accounts in peoples names without their knowledge... after a 1 million donation to trump’s inauguration the fine will go down to 150,000 dollars.
weaksauce··on ICE Deports 3 U.S. Citizen Children Held Incommunicado Prior to the Deportation
correct. i was somewhat careless with my wording but i meant find someone with the massive charisma that obama has and is also a progressive.
weaksauce··on ICE Deports 3 U.S. Citizen Children Held Incommunicado Prior to the Deportation
sorry i thought i was clear but yes obama was definitely a moderate but i meant find a progressive (with charisma like obama) that can inspire
weaksauce··on ICE Deports 3 U.S. Citizen Children Held Incommunicado Prior to the Deportation
> Are you a moderate who has a better plan?

stop supporting moderate politicians that appeal to no damn person. find someone with charisma like obama. there is no magical moderate voter that the dems keep hoping to appeal to. they already have been the center right party for decades now.

weaksauce··on Assignment 5: Cars and Key Fobs (2021)
i don't know how you can say they play favorites. internal memos show that suzuki knew that they had a rollover issue because of the narrow wheelbase and CR called them out on it through testing.
