wdb··on FTC finds 'dark patterns' used by a majority of subscription apps and websites
Does this fall within their job description? Especially, after the recent Chevron ruling.
wdb··on Ask HN: Why do interviewers hate anti-TypeScript opinions?
Personally, if I would be interviewing you for a job and you say the above then I get the feeling it might be struggle to work with you due to your strong views about the usefulness of TypeScript.

Especially, when there is a company wide agreement to use TypeScript. No one, wants to keep having discussions with a new colleague about why not to use jsdocs for type annotations. Time better spend on other things.

wdb··on Banning Airbnb Won't Solve the Housing Crisis
Maybe not but it improves the living experience of the neighbours surrounded by AirBnBs. Going to be more peaceful and less stressful due to lack of the weekly random new people at the neighbours.
wdb··on SPQR: Scaling PostgreSQL via Sharding
Pretty sure, SPQR, stands for Senatus Populusque Romanus :D
wdb··on The UK's Brexit dream is dead
Don't think UK can get a similar sweetheart deal as Switzerland has.

wdb··on It's not just you, Next.js is getting harder to use
File-based routing is one of the best things to have up to particular size of an application. Makes navigating the code so much easier then routing spread throughout the code base
wdb··on EU Commission Launches Investigation against M$ for Integrating Teams w/ Office

wdb··on SpaceX unveils backpack-sized 'Starlink Mini' internet antenna for $599
Nope, the HOA doesn't control the quality of the internet available. I have pretty poor internet. Waiting to get fibre connection, suggested to come between 2024-2026.
wdb··on After my dad died, I ran and sold his company (2018)
My father had a fragrance company (now owned by Givaudan) as client and every time he visited he came back with reproductions of famous perfumes (sampler size). I always found it interesting that they lasted longer or smelled nicer than the original. Of course, most of the time he only brought it back for mom.

First time, I visited, the company with my dad, I was surprised in how much things a fragrance is used. From perfume, shampoo but also cleaning products. It's a fascinating business.

wdb··on SpaceX unveils backpack-sized 'Starlink Mini' internet antenna for $599
Might be useful when you are not allowed to have a dish on your house due to the HOA or city council?
wdb··on [dead]
It says "Noam Chomsky's wife says reports of famed linguist's death are false" ?
wdb··on French court orders Google, Cloudflare, Cisco to poison DNS to stop piracy
You could just redirect it to the page they need to show for the bad sites :)
wdb··on French court orders Google, Cloudflare, Cisco to poison DNS to stop piracy
If you need to poison the DNS by court order. Can you also just poison the requestees DNS entries? E.g. Canal+ own websites?
wdb··on Using a 1965 Dutch Rotary Phone via VoIP (T65) in 2024
We had the Ericofoon at home. It's a nice phone
wdb··on The problem with OpenTelemetry
Well, only when you use the OTLP protocol and otel-collector. In other cases you would need a (span) exporter to multiple targets at the same time. But yeah, otel-collector would be the best approach to achieve this.
wdb··on Playwright overtakes Cypress [video]
Cypress uses Playwright for its webkit support...
wdb··on The problem with OpenTelemetry
I think you are more talking about RUM which isn't yet supported by OpenTelemetry. I think they are working on it.

I am not sure if it will support session replays like some vendors like Sentry or New Relic offer. Technically, I think session replays (rrweb etc) is pretty cool but as a web visitor I am not a fan.

wdb··on The problem with OpenTelemetry
That looks pretty cool! OpenTelemetry Collector configuration files are pretty confusing. Do like the collector, though. Makes it easy to sent a subset of your telemetry to trusted partners.
wdb··on The problem with OpenTelemetry
Personally, I like OpenTelemetry, nice standardised approach. I just wished the vendors would have better support for the semantic conventions defined for a wide variety of traces.

I quite like the idea of only need to change one small piece of the code to switch otel exporters instead of swapping out a vendor trace sdk.

My main gripe with OpenTelemetry I don't fully understand what the exact difference is between (trace) events and log records.

wdb··on Meta says European data is essential for culturally relevant AI
Not essential enough to pay for it to properly ask for opt-in
wdb··on Apple Debuts VisionOS 2
Thinking of buying now that it will be available in Hong Kong
wdb··on Apple to Debut Passwords App in Challenge to 1Password, LastPass
1Password hasn’t been working well the last few months. Half the time the Safari extension is not working and shows a Reload button but that isn’t working either. Quality went down a lot
wdb··on Microsoft's full-screen reminders – upgrade to Windows 11 are back
I think I just read a news article about Windows advertising about the many notifications on Macs?
wdb··on Crooks threaten to leak 3B personal records 'stolen from background check firm'
Fascinating. I always request my details to be removed after completion so if my details are leaked they have a problem.
wdb··on EU: Users who refuse scanning to be prevented from sharing photos and links
Always surprised why politicians get exempted from these kind of rules. You would think they would set the good example
wdb··on Savings app CEO says 85,000 accounts locked in fintech meltdown
Time to fire the compliance and/or risk officer. This was risk they must have accepted but now crying wolf? I mean this was something they should have thought off
wdb··on Carpenter's AirTags help uncover 'massive' case of stolen tools in Maryland
Yeah, fingerprinting and report that’s what they did when my house got broken into in Westminster London.
wdb··on More Feature Flags, Less Tech Debt: Launching automated feature flag cleanup
Would be cool if it supported the OpenFeature SDKs out of the box.
wdb··on pg_timeseries: Open-source time-series extension for PostgreSQL
Would this be a good extension when you want to load balancer log entries (status, response body, headers etc)?

I think a columnar database store would be more efficient than normal row-based databases? load balancer log entries could be considered something similar to analytics events.
