wav-part··on English rivers polluted by neonicotinoids, first tests reveal
Why does this apply to one group of people (private industry) but not the other (govt) ? Both are money-seeking.
wav-part··on To Save Net Neutrality, We Must Build Our Own Internet
I was just posting this.

Its also low latency routing as tor router routes only for directly connected nodes where as internet router routes for all nodes. After certain network size, internet router will become too inefficient.

wav-part··on The Paradise Papers: How Ridiculously Easy It Is for the Rich to Avoid Taxes
If we, the UK tax payers, gave you the eduction, ...

WRONG. Will this meme ever die ? Rich have always been paying extreme majority of the tax revenue. For example according to this recently released official report [1] in regards to the tax reform, In 2019 people earning >=$100k will make up 23.4% of number of tax _returns filed_ and contribute to 78.6% of all individual income tax revenue.

So if top 23.4% is ok with tax avoidence then the others really dont have much say. If the bottom 76.6% want more whatever they need to figure out a payment plan on their own.

wav-part··on A Year of Tech Solidarity
I think you mistook who we are. By we mean those who already are doing TP, not everyone. That would be everyone here.

There are enough people for everything. Some can do TP and others SP. If you are capable of doing TP then doing SP is inefficient use of resource.

wav-part··on A Year of Tech Solidarity
I think it need to be resaid: Do we make world a better place by progressing technologically/scientifically or socially ? There is really not much time for both. No offence to those who do later, but I like to believe that we do former here. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Working together for a tech is beautiful endeavour completely oppositie to a political movement.

wav-part··on Yubico announces tiny, cheap YubiHSM 2
> As I previously stated: use a computer that fits within your definition of "very easy to secure" to setup the YubiHSM; after that, encryption using the HSM is theoretically secure to the degree the CPU accessing the plaintext is secure (this does not have to be the CPU the YubiHSM is plugged into).

Whats the point ? We already have a secure system.

Trezor is an ideal HSM. Chromebook C201 can make most secure (not sure if its enough) HSM laptop. And I dont think performence is a requirement.

I more suprised why people are using YubiHSM like devices to store root keys. I dont mean to shit on someoneelse's party.

wav-part··on Yubico announces tiny, cheap YubiHSM 2
Securing computer is lost cause. Thats why HSM exist: a small computer with simple processor, no appstore (only highly tested/secured inbuilt apps), no network access (limited and specific protocol not like IP), very limited functionality. These are what makes HSM very easy to secure.

Any user customization to HSM should be considered unsafe. The new system would be expensive and "brittle".

wav-part··on Yubico announces tiny, cheap YubiHSM 2
An ideal HSM serve only one purpose: store secrets (privatekeys/passwords) and give specific access (sign/spend/login).

> Most companies consider MITM an external compromise since the malicious actor is not on the machine itself or has no-longer access to the machine(s).

Securing HSM+Laptop is impossible compared to HSM. If laptop is secure, why even need HSM ?

> Even most 'dedicated' systems do NOT have a direct link to the input terminals most of the times since they are simple usb keypads. Some smartcard readers for PC have pin-pads but this is rarely the case and they are way more expensive than a keyboard and a regular reader.

If usbkeypad is not connected to a network and not attacked by evil maid, HSM+usbkeypad is still secure. But laptop is complex system, always connected to internet and has loosly regulated physical access.

> HSMs are not "MITM proof", the system at-large has to be.

Again if whole system is secure why need HSM ?

If user satisfy few conditions of using HSM, such as being rubberhose attack proof, the secrets MUST be secure irregardless of how insecure the larger system is.

wav-part··on Yubico announces tiny, cheap YubiHSM 2
How can HSMs be considered MITM-proof if does not have dedicated input system (touchscreen/keyboard) ?
wav-part··on How many URLs/Websites are blocked in India? Government gives different answers
Not true anymore. https are getting blocked too.

Last few lines of `curl --trace - https://thepiratebay.org/` on Jio ISP. Full log https://gist.github.com/anonymous/27ddfa674233d8d17a007f1b3f...

    => Send SSL data, 5 bytes (0x5)
    0000: 15 03 03 00 1a .....
== Info: TLSv1.2 (OUT), TLS alert, Server hello (2):
    => Send SSL data, 2 bytes (0x2)
    0000: 02 46 .F
    == Info: error:1408F10B:SSL routines:SSL3_GET_RECORD:wrong version number
    == Info: Closing connection 0
So TLS handshake is being interrupted. If you think about it, https blocking is actually more efficient.

curl log does not show the last fake rcvd packet. Anyone know how to do that ?

wav-part··on America has a monopoly problem
No. If some MNC is a global monopoly then the industry is lightly/none regulated by most significant countries.

Though, USA is an exception, achived arguably due to history of low market intervention. I would not say that the MNC does not care but achieving global monopoly in heavely regulated industry is very hard. Case in point, in banking industry (the most regulated sector), there is no private (or even public) global monopoly.

wav-part··on America has a monopoly problem
In all your examples, state acts as gate-keeper and these are local/national industries. If you have a multi-national company that is monopoly, its very likely to be market granted monopoly.

> In a mixed economy, monopoly exists because of state and market.

No. We live in global economy. Most companies have to compete globally. You might get favours from few countries but not most. Note whether your home country gives you a boost or not, is irrelevent. The success in a foreign country without its govt's blessing, is the question.

wav-part··on America has a monopoly problem
This thread is confusing State granted monopoly with Market granted monopoly. Economists usually talks about the former.
wav-part··on The latest experiment in basic income will be coming to Stockton, California

wav-part··on Amazon and Apple hit by EU tax crackdown
EC is not just disagreeing with Apple's legal team but Ireland Govt (IG). Arguably IG is atleast as competent as EC if not more. And then not to mention 3rd parties such USA Treasury.

I dont know how EC can justify (in court) violating non-retroactivity traditions/laws.

wav-part··on Amazon and Apple hit by EU tax crackdown
Here is Apple's appeal.

http://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/PDF/?uri=CELEX...

> They both depend on the arbitrariness and non-generality of a company-specific tax ruling.

Thats an opinion not a fact. The case has yet to begin in court.

IMO Apple did not get any special treatment. Basically all you need is a country like Ireland where an onshore incorporated become non-resident if controlled offshore [1]. And Ireland must be not be considered as tax haven [2] by USA [3] otherwise Apple Sales International would be taxed as per USA laws whether Apple USA repatriates or not.

[1] This was true until 2015.

[2] IIRC Ireland must be considered tax-fair country. Obviously a more strict condition.

[3] Now here Ireland enjoy the benefit of single USA-EU tax treaty.

wav-part··on Catalonia’s Independence Vote Descends into Chaos and Clashes
As you say, the threat of invasion was the only reason people banded together physically. Now the the threat is gone, we should see more (as small as possible) city-states because everyone loves freedom and more control over their lives. There would not be a world government. Instead multilateralism is how the world would coordinate/cooperate.
wav-part··on Catalan referendum: 'Hundreds injured' in Catalan clashes
> I've never understood the word canary.

https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/canary_in_a_coal_mine

> What do you mean with it, in this context?

The pouplar reason given for the anti-success taxation, is that its fair. Because they agreed to the social contract. But its highly disputed by those taxpayers. Such disputes are canary/early-signs of fair/subjective contracts. Catalonians vs Spaniards is the other.

wav-part··on Catalan referendum: 'Hundreds injured' in Catalan clashes
The popular example would be "fair taxation". And catalonia ref is not fair for other spaniards.
wav-part··on Catalan referendum: 'Hundreds injured' in Catalan clashes
What we see in todays world is lot of disagreements. Why ?. Because neither side has consistent interpretation of (social) contract. Why ? Because its subjective which is result of fairism.

I am not really a good writer. I hope that clears it up. If not just ask.

wav-part··on Catalan referendum: 'Hundreds injured' in Catalan clashes
Fairism is not something you build a stable society with. The individual (usually wealthy) vs majority was the canary.
wav-part··on The SEC has charged two initial coin offerings with defrauding investors
Looks like I am wrong. SEC are also charging with fraud. https://www.sec.gov/litigation/complaints/2017/comp-pr2017-1...
wav-part··on The SEC has charged two initial coin offerings with defrauding investors
Wrong Headline.

SEC has not charged with fraud rather than with violating anti-fraud and registration provisions. Since almost no ICO implement anti-$FCRIME provisions, even honest ICO can be charged similarly.

wav-part··on How the Catalan government uses IPFS to sidestep Spain's legal block
> Countries are not people, they don't respect or love each other, they oscillate between peace and war. The history of every major nation is a history of violence and conquest, not freely entered union.

IMO that has not been true for last 70 yrs. Point to me a war that has been People vs People.

The fact of the current world is People Are Sovereign. If some >=N people domiciled in continuous region wants self-determination, thats their human right.

wav-part··on Return of the city-state
Land or GDP are not gain. So exactly what has China gained ? HKese will not pay more taxes than they were paying. And if forced they will just leave (again) and take GDP with them.

You may not fire it but there is cost of creating and maintaing a gun. Yes there might be skirmishes during birth of City-as-a-Service industry. But it will stablize as military states fails to find enough revenue to sustain itself while also maintaing welfare spending.

wav-part··on Return of the city-state
Assuming we are talking about city-states of problem solvers. Than they will neither compete nor cooperate. They will just pay the market value for a barrel of oil.

Instead, the fierce and low-margin/high-risk compitition actually exist between aggressors 1. for the control of same region (eg Saudi Arabia) and, 2. providing same product (eg crude oil).

wav-part··on Return of the city-state
Thats why no private city-state will be created near natural resource. It will be extremely stupid.
wav-part··on Return of the city-state
> Power also flows from the barrel of a gun.

Warmaking is not as profitable as it used to be. And its only decreasing. What has China to gain from invaded HK ? Problem solvers will just move to another region. If its aggressors vs problem solvers, later does not need former at all. To defend PS dont need gun, embargo will work just fine.
