wattt··on Getting out of the cloud…
I would add Digital Ocean as a lower tier, they seem to have provisioning plugins for everything I use (mostly Vagrant) but I roll my own DNS and load balancing. Still US-based unfortunately.
wattt··on Tripling Down Against USA Conference Hosting
Why do you think Canada wouldn't be as good for Central or South Americans? There are flights to Central and South America from almost everywhere in Canada. I speak Spanish in Canada often.
wattt··on Whiteboard sticker for your laptop
Or you could have a touchscreen and launch an application to do the all the things you want. Plus other things!
wattt··on Whiteboard sticker for your laptop
Just get a touchscreen already. Then you can draw like on every other device you currently own.
wattt··on Resisting Trump: How to survive the coming surveillance state
So what else is new? It has been coming since 2001. Get over it.
wattt··on Before you start a company, answer these questions
Sounds a lot like my approach. I've been in business for over 8 years.
wattt··on What Does Rudy Giuliani Actually Know About Cybersecurity?
According to this link he knows how to 404 a Vice article.
wattt··on I was losing emails for years without knowing
Multiple factors from my understanding, mostly because the DNS vendor expects a particular configuration and didn't complain when it accepted "bad" data for their systems.
wattt··on I was losing emails for years without knowing
Interesting findings! I've had trouble with DNS providers and it is always with the root or "@" domain. As a Bind administrator it drives me mad how they make things complex unnecessarily to save me from myself, often resulting in failed switch-overs, and a 2x wait on DNS updates.
wattt··on App.net is shutting down
So... Every startup? Except the big companies!
wattt··on Atlassian acquires Trello for $425M
Yeah but if my team has lots of inactive users that starts to add up.
wattt··on Atlassian acquires Trello for $425M
Yes, I just recently evaluated switching my small team from JIRA->trello. I'd do it in a heartbeat if the licensing costs were better aligned.
wattt··on Atlassian acquires Trello for $425M
They will JIRA-fy it or kill it. I use JIRA and pay for it, it is hell on earth for teams of 2-5. We looked into switching to trello to reduce overhead but... It cost more for less features. So we stayed with JIRA.

They will kill trello so everyone is stuck with JIRA. Someone please make a trello clone with reasonable pricing, now!

wattt··on Tesla's new radar tech predicts an accident caught on dashcam a second later
How are they different?
wattt··on Ask HN: Should I learn Bootstrap 3 or 4 at this moment?
The answer you want is to use Bootstrap 3. The reason is that you are new and tutorials will be written for that version. Although generally speaking I would start with 4, you also don't want to burn out on stupid unfinished/incomplete work. Don't burn out when you are just starting!
wattt··on Six more radio signals from deep space deepen mystery

wattt··on Why is my NTP server costing $500 per year? Part 1 (2014)
I too was expecting some sort of conclusion.
wattt··on Twitter’s Chief Technology Officer to Leave Company
I personally really hate these. There is always one or two good posts that hook me in but then the bias/politics/etc gets revealed when you read the rest. My friends retweet them but in the end I just think the author (and my duped friend) are idiots. Maybe it is just who I follow...
wattt··on Twitter’s Chief Technology Officer to Leave Company
It took them 6 weeks to change the star button into a heart, which nobody wanted because we don't "like" all the things we save for later. Twitter has been going in the wrong direction all year.
wattt··on Twitter’s Chief Technology Officer to Leave Company
I heart this
wattt··on Ask HN: Do SMBs still care about their websites?
I have seen this happen a few times. Sometimes businesses switch to turnkey/template sites, but if all they need is an address in Google Maps it isn't necessary a lot of the time.

Conversely, as a web developer, I have stopped working with this segment completely. Non-tech organizations of 1-2 people are way more hassle to deal with than larger organizations.

wattt··on Super Mario Run
> Many of the other comments in this thread are low-effort "mobile games aren't real games, lol."

Most people are on Android though, so there are a lot of people who can't give it a test run. I think that leads to more garbage comments like that.

wattt··on Super Mario Run
> I have an Android phone

The majority of us do. Disappointing they launched exclusively on iOS.

wattt··on Super Mario Run
What year do they think this is that there is no Android version?
wattt··on Super Mario Run
That first video is so inappropriate I can't get my head around it. I thought it was going to be an augmented reality game like Pokemon Go. Turns out it is just a regular game. I can't get back to the website to try it though, the promotional page sucks!
wattt··on 30-Day Vanilla JavaScript Coding Challenge
Keep in mind we're not talking just about JS on the web running in web browsers. It runs on servers. It runs as standalone applications. If you are targeting a non-web environment you're not writing for quirks of different browsers, you know the runtime environment you are targeting explicitly. It isn't that bad.
wattt··on Ask HN: Large brand wants to buy my side project, what should I do?
I second this. If 10 or 20k isn't enough, what if you add a 0? Given your input time (labour) plus consumables (computers, internet service, food) you have probably spent 20-50k on development already.
wattt··on AWS announces new region in Canada
The center of Canada is Winnipeg.
wattt··on AWS announces new region in Canada
Central Canada means Manitoba mostly, since it is geographic centre as well as being in central timezone.
wattt··on Dear JavaScript
Rather than acknowledge some of the criticisms are true the author complains that complainers are the problem. Can't see the forest through the trees.
