watson··on Glacier redux
I've always thought that the deletion fee for <3 month old data was a way to limit "misuse of the service" - call it a detergent if you will - more than actually a way to recuperating costs. Because I guess the costs will be there no matter when you delete data
watson··on Twitter Analytics
I'm wondering why the URL redirects to "/accounts/3lycc/timeline_activity" - specifically the "3lycc" part?

First I thought that the OP had submitted a link to his personal analytics page, but entering just analytics.twitter.com in the browser redirects to this page. Does anybody know what 3lycc means?

watson··on The Hackers Who Recovered NASA’s Lost Lunar Photos
This have been an ongoing project for many years and a lot of really nice articles have come out over the years. I remember once seeing a lot of nice photographs from the old McDonalds restaurant that showed some nice details about their setup.

The guys even have their own Wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lunar_Orbiter_Image_Recovery_Pr...

watson··on AeroMobil: Flying car
Interesting thought... but wouldn't your body already have the same speed and direction as before the switch-off? The switch-off would only stop external forces from altering your speed and direction. So I would estimate that you have plenty of time to steer clear of stuff after you turned off the gravity effect. It kind of similar to switching off the autopilot in an airplane. After doing so you have to take manually control of your position in space, but you don't instantaneously stop flying.

Talk about bad luck! Loosing the sight in one eye at a time in two separate, but almost exact incidents
watson··on Google Now for Chrome
Apparently they must be rolling this feature out differently than other features which trickle down the channels. Maybe Google Now have been in the channels for a while without anybody knowing, just disabled unless some flag was enabled by either the client or a server. This way they can enable it for only certain users, circumventing the normal Channel release cycle.

I found this interesting quote in a 2014/02/03 blog post[1] on the Google Chrome blog:

"Update 3/24/2014: Starting today and rolling out over the next few weeks, Google Now users in all languages will be able to get these notifications in all channels of Chrome. To enable this feature, simply sign in to Chrome with the same Google Account you’re using for Google Now on Android or iOS."

This also suggest that they are using a different release approach than just relying on the release-channels.

watson··on Google Now for Chrome
As far as I know, I've only had Google Now in my Dev Channel Chrome for some months. Has it really already arrived in the Stable Channel? And in that case, wouldn't that have required the version numbers of all the channels to be bumped up (the Dev channel have been v35 since late February)? As far as I know features don't make it down the channels (Dev -> Beta -> Stable) individually (e.g. by being "cherry-picked") - they instead stay within the version where they where first added.

watson··on Update on Julie Horvath's Departure
You're right - the TechCrunch article didn't mention access to private repos - only private employee chatrooms. But the question was raised here on HN, asking if she did have access to private employee chatrooms what else might she or others have access to? If the security is lax in one area, one might assume it's lax in others as well. But it's just speculation - but it has merit non the less

watson··on How I resurrected my MacBook Pro by putting it in the oven
For anyone interested in the nerdy details of why this works: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reflow_soldering

Anyway, this isn't new - I remember seeing this on Slashdot, HN and a lot ofter other places over the years:

watson··on F.lux updated
It's funny how we see things differently.

It is my understanding that this was "by design". I.e. that if you work after the sun is set, it's bad for your natural sleep cycle for you to stare at a monitor screen which emits light that looks like the light coming from the sun.

By tying the emitted color from the screen to the rising and setting of the sun, your brain isn't affect by this any more. This doesn't mean that you have to go to bed when the sun sets and your monitor turns yellow - it just means that you increased your chances of feeling tired at a more natural point during the evening.

I'm a long time f.lux user and have happily accepted the yellow sun set on my monitor when the sun outside set. I've even worked long hours with this setting since it's a great ease on the eyes. If you ever worked at night with this setting for a couple of hours and then tried to switch of f.lux, you will feel your eye becoming VERY sore. Only then do you realize how uncomfortable the normal light from your monitor is.

The article specifically mentions how this special HTTP header was implemented client side using a browser extension and how it's handled server side
watson··on Show HN: A simple IP address API

watson··on Show HN: A simple IP address API
If your goal is geo-redirection then a 3rd party service is usually a bad choice (speed + downtime). An memory geo-ip database is the best way to go - but this is usually also part of what you pay for when you buy the non-free version

watson··on Dropbox will kill your insane MacBook Air 2013 battery
Can anyone confirm his findings? I imagine that if this is real, then this is a problem for all MacBook owners not just the latest MacBook Air.

I have a 13" MacBook Air, medio 2011. I bought it almost right after it was released and have used it as my only computer almost every day since. I have the Dropbox agent running all the time.

While working last Sunday I got 5.5 hours of battery life out of it and I've never taken good care of the battery. I never drain it unless I'm not near a power outlet, in which case I just have it plugged in all day.

My current battery health information shows: Cycle Count: 253, Condition: Normal

watson··on Traceroute from a Norwegian Airlines airplane
I also tried to comment on a post on Stack Overflow. The first 5 times I clicked the button, I got a timeout and had to try again. But in the end some lucky guy got a response on SO from 10km above Europe ;)
watson··on Traceroute from a Norwegian Airlines airplane
I started this trace-route within 30 seconds after the seatbelt sign was switched off (the wifi isn't enabled while taking off), so I imagine only a few people would have had the time to connect to the wifi at this point.

But in general, the wifi on one of these flights is very useless. I was hacking on a node.js project and used it to look up some ES5 related stuff on StackOverflow. I tried to post it to gist.github.com while in the air but wasn't even able to load the page (though google and SO loaded fine)

watson··on New urban migration patterns shaped by the youngs
I'm from Copenhagen, Denmark and we've seen this here as well. Especially lately I feel that a lot of 1st-time parents stay in city apartments instead of buying houses in the outer parts or in the suburbs.

I have several friends, whose apartment complexes within the last 5-7 years have turned from housing a bunch of 50+ year old folks without kids to primarily young couples in their 20's/30's with 1 or 2 young kids.

I think this have a lot to do with the city's development and "marketing" towards the younger generation. Maybe the Danes just want to stay "young" longer and longer ;)

watson··on Startup pack gives away $10k worth of tools to new businesses
It's a shame they require us to be incorporated. We're holding off so far because it doesn't make sense until we either get investment or our first real employee. But at that time we will most likely be able to aford these tools. It doesn't make sense to me why they require the incorporation when it's the unincorporated companies that need this package the most :(

Hej :)

Sounds great! The Podio guys are awesome. You can get in touch with me on twa@pumodo.com. We'll arrive on the 28th of August and leave on the 25th of November.

Great feedback! I'll defeantly look into that. Zipcar or the like would be fun to try
watson··on How to bootstrap in The Valley/San Francisco for 3 months
Absolutely - I was just thinkng about wifi because it's sometimes a hassle to always tether your phone. In my experience the tethering isn't always that stable and you have to reconnect.

Since we are both from Denmark we are included in the Visa Waiver Program which "allows citizens of specific countries to travel to the United States for tourism or business for up to 90 days without having to obtain a visa" -http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Visa_Waiver_Program

We will not be working for anybody during our stay. It's simply a business trip so we can network, pitch for investors and hopefully raise money.
