watmough··on Yokadi: CLI sqlite powered todo list
This is a great point.

I do love sqlite, it really is awesome, but you had better need what it provides, since you are taking a 50x performance hit versus simply dumping an object tree to a binary file.

If anyone is interested, I could try and dig up my notes from switching from sqlite to NSArchive.

watmough··on Bullshit Startup Experiences
Your job descriptions are the very model of clarity.

I wouldn't normally comment, but it makes a great impression.

watmough··on Ask HN: What was your best passive income in 2015?
My iPhone apps I created from 2009 - 2011 still provide a small income typically around $20 - $40 per month. Back in the day FemCal alone was doing $1500+ per month, with me 'full-time' on promoting and supporting it, but with little support or maintenance, apps waste away quickly.

It might be several hours to fix, retest and update documentation for even a small platform change, so just keeping up with platform changes can be significant effort if you work a full-time job, have children, other commitments etc.

The good news for me is that changes at work are affording me the opportunity to escape some process and re-open some of my side-projects again.

watmough··on Why I Don’t Rely on Time Machine
Never used TimeMachine.

I use SuperDuper to simply image my entire box to a disk every so often.

watmough··on I'm done with iCloud Photo Library
Wow, terrifying.

This is kinda similar to why I use SuperDuper to image my Mac, instead of trusting Time Machine.

I do love Apple, but there's a few wrinkles sometimes.

watmough··on The golden gigaflop: Apple’s shrinking performance sweet spot
But the interesting thing, is that the iPad was created before the iPhone, and shelved to make way for the iPhone, so I'd say the modified graph reflects if not the release order, at least the order of innovation.
watmough··on What I’ve learned from sitting next to a pro salesman
I think this pretty much applies to anyone who has to talk to people, and get things done.

I do tech support of complex software for a living, and if something is not solved on a call, then the best way to leave the call gracefully is to itemize and describe next steps.

This applies anywhere you are driving a process.

watmough··on Mark Zuckerberg's plan for the future of Facebook
Facebook's editorial control of users' postings makes it feel I have no control over when/where my own updates appear, thus rendering it irrelevant to me, though I do use it to follow others.

Also, the bulk of my friends on Facebook, by and large, regurgitate garbage 'viral' content I have no interest in.

Links to interesting content for me, are on Twitter, Bandcamp and YC.

watmough··on US homes have gotten huge – offsetting the gains from energy efficiency
I completely agree and have a solid anecdote.

Summer electricity bill in Texas for my previous 1600 sqft house, about $100-$150 month for cooling from Texas ambient to 74 F.

For our new 3200 sq ft house, we cool to 73 F, for the same cost!!!!

That is the difference between a late 70's house, and modern construction, which is foam-filled up the wazoo.

watmough··on JB-9 jetpack makes debut flying around Statue of Liberty
It crossed my mind that all you really need is the right engines and some means of control ...

watmough··on The Apple iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus Review
I am about to go read the article, but after owning a 6s+ for the past couple weeks, I will give a few impressions first:

  * Very very very large (this is a big-ass phone),
  * Very very very very fast,
  * Some good options in the UI for heavier Mac style 'fuzzy' text,
  * Battery life is barely dented after a typical day of surfing and texting occasionally at work,
  * Phone is 'slippery' and I have to use a special grip, wrapping fingers around it to hold it securely,
  * Camera is fantastic, with people asking me 'what lens' are you using, assuming I'm on my Nikon SLR,
  * Fingerprint unlocking is here, and works perfectly.
All in all, it's an incredible leap from the iPhone 4S I had before. $900+ is a LOT for a phone though.
watmough··on JP Morgan to Grant IPO Access to Everyone
Hmmm, call me an old cynic, but this kind of populist move typically comes before a downturn.
watmough··on How the Ballpoint Pen Killed Cursive
There was a ruler poised over my knuckles well into the 70's...
watmough··on BMW: All Models Electric Within Decade
It will not take much additional friction in practical usage to remove the hydrogen car from the equation. Just as steam cars were similarly discarded from the mainst[r]eam.

We didn't run out of whale oil, coal, or wood. We haven't run out of oil, but as cheap solar infiltrates as solar generation drops in price, it will make much more sense to run personal transportation on clean and simple electricity.

watmough··on Prison Born
End private prisons that can incentivize arrest and imprisonment for minor offenders. No cite but commonly acknowledged that creating private prisons also creates a demand for prisoners.

The US puts a larger percentage of its population behind bars than any other country.

watmough··on Show HN: Phishing as a service
Neat, but doesn't seem very IT/corporate, which would surely be the intended audience.

watmough··on Why Don't Software Developers Use Static Analysis Tools to Find Bugs?
cl : Command line warning D9040: ignoring option '/analyze'; Code Analysis warnings are not available in this edition of the compiler

Ooops.

watmough··on Detecting Adblock
Yeah, sorry, not turning off adblock!
watmough··on Boffins reveal password-killer 0days for iOS and OS X
Right, but it's pretty clear from the paper that one major step forward would be for apps to check whether their keychain has been compromised.

This is something that apps can go forward with. But doesn't close the door if it was already opened.

Overall, this is just a brutal suite of bugs though, and a great paper.

watmough··on Let’s Build a Simple Interpreter, Part 1
That's a good little mailing list. The biggest issue seems to be keeping tcc working across all supported platforms when changing stuff for a single platform.

tcc can actually be made to build Windows executables in the 'old-school' "Programming Windows" way, which is quite fun.

watmough··on Let’s Build a Simple Interpreter, Part 1
Ideally it does one pass, except under the following conditions:

For initialized arrays with unknown size, a first pass is done to count the number of elements.
For architectures where arguments are evaluated in reverse order, a first pass is done to reverse the argument order.
From: http://bellard.org/tcc/tcc-doc.html

This great code to read. I need to get back to playing with it again.

watmough··on Designing Zachtronics' TIS-100

watmough··on Lift vs. angle of attack
Yes, this is really how it works, and Bernoulli should be left in the dustbin, since in comparison it's a smaller effect, with more impact for carburetors than aircraft wings.

One small anecdote: the first time I flew a 1-26, I got it a bit slow, and a loud noise and vibration started to come from the flat tail at the rear. Of course, this was me approaching the top of that curve, where lift is lost and the surface stalls. I called ground, and they told me to fly a bit faster, and of course the noise abated.

Anyone who's interested in flight should go fly a sailplane. It really is one of the most awesome experiences a human can have.

watmough··on New C++ experimental feature: The tadpole operators
Strong force '~' finally makes it into C++.
watmough··on Nirvana Engine for ZX Spectrum (2013)
Clunkier. Yep. Doesn't look near as good as the 'real' Spectrum R-Type.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-6lvAXSGBpI

I think it's the blocky movement that kinda kills it for me.

watmough··on Modern C++ as a Better Compiler
Thanks for the correction.
watmough··on Show HN: Simple Hash Table Implementation for C
Thanks a bunch for that, khash looks really interesting, and it does what I kinda wanted to do, but didn't really realize was possible.

Suddenly, the C preprocessor doesn't seem quite as far distant from C++ templates as I'd thought...

watmough··on Show HN: Simple Hash Table Implementation for C
Yes, there's definitely some stuff in there I hadn't thought of like how to handle strings as char[xxx] vs string ptrs.

Thanks.
