The most poser, performative "engineer" I've worked with still posts their desperate, attention-seeking thoughts on LinkedIn Posts. I wish I had the guts to tell them how sad it is.
wateralien··on Gravity seems holographic. What does that mean for reality?
To me (a total physics layperson with just an interest in it) space and time HAVE to be emergent and not fundamental because of the real phenomena of spooky action at a distance and dual slit craziness. All spacetime surely has to be connected is what it’s telling us.
wateralien··on Show HN: Koi.rest – watch some fish and regain your balance
I do this with the screensavers on the Apple TV device. They’re amazing.
wateralien··on 9 Ads per Minute: FIFA Cup 26 – "the price of the beautiful game"
It's not only the World Cup, it's everything, everywhere, all the time. We are drowning in marketing messages. It's gross.
wateralien··on 9 Ads per Minute: FIFA Cup 26 – "the price of the beautiful game"
People don't ignore anything. Everything is absorbed one way or another.

There is evidence that systems reduce crime, yes. A system is probably the only thing which has ever meaningfully reduced crime. A law. A strategy. A process. I think you're meaning digital systems though. I'd say digital systems are part of every system now.
wateralien··on EU chief opens door for Canada to become 'associate member'
Oh no, my Haribos aren't full of artificial colours.
wateralien··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (September 2026)
Really great work.
wateralien··on Feeling Sad about AI
Making any external thing one's identity is a recipe for disaster when it goes away.
wateralien··on Switzerland's Federal Government Is Replacing Microsoft on 3k Computers
> I miss is the copy/paste from iphone to the computer sync

Such a key feature and probably the one thing that keeps me locked into the Apple ecosystem

I hope sarcasm is working well for you. To clarify: it would be abused without systems, therefore add court warrants to access any personal information. Criminals are already abusing society by knowing that most of their crime will never be caught.
wateralien··on Flock used >100 times to track veteran who recorded traffic stop
Yes that should all require a court warrant based on probable cause.
wateralien··on Flock used >100 times to track veteran who recorded traffic stop
If abuse can’t be eliminated then it’s about what ratio of abuse to crime reduction is tolerable I guess. If we find 100 taken children while a dirty cop stalks his ex - is that tolerable? I’d say yes. If it became more abused I guess that’s when society needs to decide.

> make sure they're used legally and bad apples don't ruin a good thing

The unedited comment shows he used it correctly using “and” to mean “so that”.

wateralien··on Flock used >100 times to track veteran who recorded traffic stop
Video is useful in keeping people safe. Including from the cops. It’s about remaking the system to require court permission every time they access it, process and transparency.
wateralien··on Flock used >100 times to track veteran who recorded traffic stop
Surely access to footage can be gated behind some sort of expedited digital court warrant?

I always think of that scene in Minority Report where 3 judges are conferenced in live when a “vision” arrived.

Because if used properly and lawfully these cameras can be useful to keep people safe. Including from the cops.

wateralien··on Global warming will exceed 1.5-degree limit, UN says
This is mostly the UN’s own fault. Nation governments refrain from getting “hardcore” on this because the better options are expensive and they don’t want to be undercut by another country. The UN is supposed to somehow use its deep diplomatic negotiating and deal-making skill to find and enforce agreement between these states so we all adopt the changes together… and penalise the hold-outs (we all know who) together.
wateralien··on Global warming will exceed 1.5-degree limit, UN says
Our environment will collapse and the fat cats will still deny it and convince most of us that it was our fault and that nothing could be done and that we should just buy their anti-environment-collapse products to protect ourselves.
wateralien··on Commodore 64 released September 1, 1982
This is a great question
wateralien··on Commodore 64 released September 1, 1982
Greetings, fellow old people.
wateralien··on Commodore 64 released September 1, 1982
I had a ZX Spectrum and learned Basic and played a ton of pirated games on that. My school had Commodore 64s - but I didn't use them much. They didn't really know how to teach for them and there was no hacking around allowed.

wateralien··on OpenLogi
Before AI you'd be saying it's a great website for a free and open source app.
wateralien··on Cursor launches Origin, GitHub alternative
The main thing that makes GitHub the default is that almost every other service considers it the default. Launching a better product won't change that.
wateralien··on NeoBrowser: An MCP server that drives real Chrome with your logged-in sessions
Yeah same, Claude drives my (manually) signed-in sessions.
wateralien··on Physical Database
Each row is a resource (cage?), start peg = check-in, end peg = check-out. Peg color = month change. String (elastic band?) booking entry. String color combo maybe indicates booking status. Overlaps are immediately obvious. Hyper-centralised and susceptible to breakage or loose cat.
wateralien··on Reticulum – Decentralized Mesh Network
Unfortunate name for the project.
wateralien··on Show HN: I made a game where you build a CPU from logic gates
Just checked. Looking good!
