watchdogtimer··on SC-IM – An ncurses spreadsheet program for the terminal
I've been using sc for many years. As others have noted, it's lightweight and fast. Some of it's unusual features are:

1. Each cell can contain both a label and a value, so you don't need an extra column to label numeric values.

2. Cell editing is done using vi keybindings.

3. Files are stored in a very readable, pure text format.

The biggest drawback of sc is there is no undo. If you delete something by mistake, you can't bring it back. This is the biggest reason to choose SC-IM, IMHO.

Unfortunately, the menu commands in SC-IM are not the same as the ones in sc, which is a real problem on a keyboard-based spreadsheet and you have developed sc muscle memory :(. SC-IM's help menu is also hard to read in narrow terminal window, because it uses fixed-width line endings that cause every line to improperly wrap. The fact that sc is included by default in most, if not all, Linux distributions makes it so convenient to install and use I likely won't ever change.

watchdogtimer··on Simultaneous AP and Client Mode Wi-Fi on Raspberry Pi Zero W
What I did on a similar project using a different board was scan all the APs in the area first, get the band of the AP with the strongest signal, then bring up the device AP using that band. I figured the AP with the strongest signal is the closest AP and the one you most likely want to connect to.
watchdogtimer··on Mutt email client 25 years old
I operate my own server and SMTP forward using Mailjet and have had zero problems as well.
watchdogtimer··on 64 bit OS Raspberry Pi4 Benchmarks
Where can I get it? I didn't think Mozilla offered a precompiled version for aarch64 Linux. I've been using an the Debian ESR release (68.0.5) from the Armbian repository on my NanoPi M4.
watchdogtimer··on FreeCAD on Raspberry Pi 4
FWIW, I've been using Freecad 0.18 on a Nano Pi M4 (64-bit ARM) installed from the standard Debian 10 repository of Armbian for the past several weeks with zero problems.

Isn't the <srcset> element supposed to solve this problem?
watchdogtimer··on What is wrong with all those AArch64 desktops?
Support for the Rockchip RK3399-based boards seems pretty good. Audio and wireless on my NanoPi M4 have worked flawlessly for me. No problem playing YouTube videos, either, even at 1.5x speed. Editing 3D CAD files using Freecad in Debian 10 has also worked great.

The only things I miss are being able to run the latest versions of some software, which are often compiled only for x86 or MacOS. For instance, I'm currently stuck on Debian's Firefox ESR (currently Firefox 68.4) because Firefox doesn't offer precompiled binaries for AArch64 on Linux.

watchdogtimer··on What is wrong with all those AArch64 desktops?
I use a pedal-powered computer. For me, every watt counts.

My desktop system is a NanoPi M4 and a 16" Sceptre monitor. The combined system draws a total of about 6.5 W. Granted, there are some laptops that come near that level of power consumption. I simply like the form factor of a desktop PC.

watchdogtimer··on Cooling off your Raspberry Pi 4
Probably either the Odroid N2 or HC2 or Nano Pi M4.

The one feature all these boards have in common is their CPU is mounted on the _bottom_ of the board, allowing a much larger heat sink to be mounted without obstructing anything. The lack of this feature in on the RPi 4 is a fatal blunder IMHO and why I chose not to buy it.

I currently use a Nano Pi M4 as my main desktop computer. It has no active cooling, only a big heatsink which covers the entire rear of the board. As I write this, I have three browser windows open containing a total of 30 tabs while streaming a 44 kHz stereo 128 kbps audio stream. Its CPU temp is holding at 32 C.

watchdogtimer··on Mitch Kapor Introduces Lotus 1-2-3 Spreadsheet (1983) [video]
1-2-3 was way too expensive for me back when I was in graduate school, so I used a shareware clone called 'As Easy As'[1] for the calculations required for my thesis. It worked great.

It's too bad console-based spreadsheets have fallen out of favor. I still find them useful for doing quick calculations when using a terminal. My go-to spreadsheet console app these day is 'sc', which is still available in all the standard linux repositories. An improved version, sc-im, has multi-level undo and color support, and is available on github [2] .

watchdogtimer··on Which has more sales: a single long checkout form or a multi-step one?
This is why I wrote our shopping cart so that when a user adds something to the cart for the first time, it immediately asks their country and postal code and calculates shipping charges.

The frustrating thing is this is such an anti-pattern that we _still_ get emails from potential customers requesting the cost of shipping to their country.

watchdogtimer··on The Modern Bicycle and Its Accessories (1898) [pdf]
A much better book [0] IMHO is "Bicycle and Tricycles: A Classic Treatise on Their Design and Construction" published in 1896 and republished by Dover in 2011. This book goes into great detail about the science of bicycling. It assumes only a basic math knowledge, and covers topics such as vector mechanics, stress, strain, mechanics of motion, dynamics, etc, all applied to bicycles. I found it quite readable and a great way to learn engineering mechanics. I highly recommend it.

I have both a homebuilt bakfeit-style cargo bike and a bike trailer [0]. The cargo bike works great for carrying smaller loads, but when it comes to carry large cargo like furniture or building supplies, I find the trailer more useful.

watchdogtimer··on PayPal vs. Stripe for small businesses in 2019
+1 for Braintree. We have used several different payment providers over the years, including PayPal alone. We switched to Braintree back when they were offering $50K in free payment transactions.

The payment integration was straightforward, and getting built-in support for PayPal (which accounts for 16% of our sales) and the ability to safely vault payment methods made it a no-brainer.

watchdogtimer··on Spain will soon overtake Japan in life expectancy rankings
If a Mediterranean diet is responsible for Spain's long life expectancy, then why has it taken them this long to achieve this top ranking? Why didn't they achieve it earlier?
watchdogtimer··on How bicycles have changed in the last 25 years
In at least a couple of ways, bicycles have regressed:

1) It used to be possible to shift down multiple gears quickly (e.g., when coming to a stop light). Now, many index shifting systems outside of twist shift only allow one gear shift at a time.

2) It used to be all bikes had replaceable chainrings, allowing you to replace worn rings, adjust the overall gear ratio of the bike higher or lower, or change the ratios to create a half-step shift pattern. Now, many bikes have sprockets riveted to the crank arm and derailleur systems so tightly matched to the size of the chainrings that changing chainring size is no longer feasible.

watchdogtimer··on Turn Vim into Excel: Tips for Editing Tabular Data (2013)
If you want to use a spreadsheet with vi key bindings, most linux distros have sc (spreadsheet calculator) in their repositories. It's kind of a cross between vi and the DOS version of Lotus 1-2-3. A newer, improved version of sc with features including undo/redo and csv/tsv export and import is sc-im (https://github.com/andmarti1424/sc-im).
watchdogtimer··on Analyzing the Walmart site performance
Glad to hear it. I find Walmart's web site to be so slow on my PC to be almost unusable. I hate to think what the experience must be like for users on old computers or really low end phones.
watchdogtimer··on Brand New ODroid Single Board Computer
It's true that many board vendors use out-of-date kernels and rarely update their software. But community editions like [Armbian](https://www.armbian.com) are usually kept fully up to date.

I've been using multiple ARM-based SBCs as desktop computers over a year now and have really been impressed with how software support has improved. It used to be only older versions of Firefox would run. Now most boards that use Ubuntu 18.04 (which include most versions of Armbian) will run Firefox 62.

watchdogtimer··on Show HN: Markdown page – Create a web page with just markdown
I wonder what effect having a page solely in markdown has on SEO? Without markup for headers, links, etc, how will search engines prioritize content? Will they use the raw content or the parsed HTML?
watchdogtimer··on Why work has failed us: Because no one can afford to retire anymore
It's interesting that while people claim they can't afford to retire, more than half of the population begins collecting Social Security in the US at age 62 (https://www.marketwatch.com/story/why-people-who-claim-socia...) when those on disability are included.

watchdogtimer··on States Can Require Internet Tax Collection, Supreme Court Rules
We don't. We're one of those mom-and-pop businesses that uses a self-hosted shopping cart, and use Braintree as our payment processor which has no sales tax recording system that I'm aware of.
