wastedbrains··on A Desk That Allows You to Stand or Sit
I have the geekdesk or something that looks exactly like it. I love it. I sit in the mornings and after lunch switch to standing mode. Occasionally if I have to really focus or type a lot I will switch back to sitting mode, but it definitely helps to get me move around more / feel healthier.
wastedbrains··on IPhone or Android for new game development?
I'd go for the Andriod, it is gaining steam. I think the big fish in a smaller pond idea makes a lot of sense. If it does well on one platform I would look at finding someone with experience on the other to help port it.
wastedbrains··on Ruby official mirror on Github
Once the transition is complete this should help to increase the quality and speed of development on Ruby. It is amazing how much contributions on projects go up, when moved to git/github.
wastedbrains··on ASk HN the case for going all OpenID Vs. local accounts Vs. Both
thanks. We are a really geeky service. I think we can accept facebook and twitter as forms of openid as they implement the protocol. I think we are going to move forward with just openID and see what kind of demand or requests we get to create our own password system.
wastedbrains··on Heroku learns the hard way from Amazon EC2 outage
We had just deployed a new version of our app to Heroku as this happened. I thought our release was incredibly buggy and constantly crashing until I noticed Heroku's status update. They came back quickly, and for us it is a known risk of having our server in the cloud.
wastedbrains··on TalkerApp launched
Nice good luck, I am interested to see what people do with the API.
wastedbrains··on Eric Schmidt: "If you have something [to hide], maybe you shouldn't be doing it"
Yeah I disagree with Eric on this point. There are many things I think are fine and acceptable to do, but they don't need to be a part of my public life.

I don't want employers, grandparents, and the government to have access to my private and personal life.

No reason everyone should know movies, books, music, games, sexuality, political beliefs, and everything else about me.

wastedbrains··on Ask HN: Things you wish you'd learned about programming in college?
I wish I learned more about testing, Source Control, and using and integrating with existing code and libraries.
wastedbrains··on Ask HN: If Apple didn't approve apps, would you install them on your only phone?
Yes, I do it on my computer all the time... I did it on my older smart phones as well. If an app was buggy or crashed a lot, I uninstalled it.
wastedbrains··on ShopSavvy Comes To The Iphone - Turn your Iphone into a Barcode Reader
It has had a barcode reader / price comparisons based on the barcodes for some time now. http://redlaser.com/ In fact it was the #2 selling iPhone app for quite awhile.
wastedbrains··on Pastebin which is able to run your code. Accepts 40 languages.
I like this and also really like http://codepad.org before it, but all I really want added is an embed feature. So you can post code snippets on your blog, and as people read the examples they can run the code.

Consider this a feature request for either service, it would be great.

wastedbrains··on Microsoft's New Killer App
Amazon AWS really should have a 'app store' of pre configured EC2s with wordpress, drupal, etc.

Online interface boots the EC2, makes sure it loaded, and links you to the admin interface, links to backedup s3 dumps, etc

wastedbrains··on We raised a seed round with Cuban and Betaworks
Congrats that is awesome, keep up the good work.
wastedbrains··on Tools we use for running our startup
Great write up and list, thanks for sharing, very interested Typinator. I might have to check that out soon.

We use a lot of the same tools. We ended up going with Presently over Yammer, but I bet we would be happy with either. It has been a great way to keep a remote team on the same page.

wastedbrains··on Unit testing in Coders at Work
I do that a lot to, I try to call it Test Focused Development opposed to TDD
wastedbrains··on Matt Cutts 30 day challenge for October: No Microsoft Software
I don't know if I use any MS stuff in my day to day life anymore. I don't have Windows, but more importantly I don't use office. I do all my office related work on Google Docs. With that out of the way and being on the Ruby stack I don't have any real need for MS apps.
wastedbrains··on Remote Pair Programming with Screen and Vim
We remote pair all the time with Skype, VNC, then whatever editor the typist is most comfortable in (in our company always emacs). It works really well long as no one is having a bad net connection day.
wastedbrains··on Check out my side project: I rewrote rxvt in javascript
Very cool idea, I love the idea of copy and paste from tutorial videos.
wastedbrains··on Tweethook: Twitter data, pushed to you
Also similar to GNIP
wastedbrains··on Duct Tape Considered Harmful
I agree and I find that the people who are architecture astronauts as he refers to them, are very vocal and active on forums, twitter, and blogging.

I don't want to get into the whole testing debate, but I think you can read the whole article and remove the one point on testing and it still holds.

wastedbrains··on How not to die
I read this whenever we are currently on a down swing on the roller coaster that is a startup.
wastedbrains··on Ask HN: Are you a founder?
Currently cofounder of http://devver.net currently acting at CTO mostly doing development.
wastedbrains··on Startup CTO mistakes I'd rather not repeat...
I think I have some of the same problems,I thought it was a good write up and hopefully will make me more aware when I am making a common mistake...

Spending to much time on the technology over the people seemed very relevant to me, as it might pay off in the short term but as the company grows it surely hurts it.

wastedbrains··on HN Guideline Reminder: Please remove numbers from post titles
I disagree if the title of the article being linked to contains numbers so should the post title. It is more misleading and awkward to click the link and then do a double take when the article names don't match.

I think this is a bad guideline.

wastedbrains··on Ask HN: Review my startup, Devver.net: Accelerated Ruby testing
Yeah we currently support GemInstaller and Rails built in gem dependencies. We talked a bit with Heroku and hopefully we can figure out if it is best to support the .gems directly or through some geminstaller compatibility layer.
wastedbrains··on Ask HN: Review my startup, Devver.net: Accelerated Ruby testing
We have but trust me the price they are asking is unreasonable.
wastedbrains··on Hulu Still Going Strong, But Growth Is Dropping Off Sharply
I think the main issue is Hulu used to have full seasons, now with TV networks / Cable operators fighting back Hulu only has the most recent 5 episodes of anything... Also, Hulu seems to be removing movies faster than adding them now... It was so successful that it kind of freaked the industry out and they are now shrinking it...
wastedbrains··on How I Hacked Hacker News (with arc security advisory)
Wow I must say I am impressed Kudos fine sir!
wastedbrains··on Sinatra clone in Scala
If this is a port of Sinatra that is an option to make a very small concise webservice. You can choose to do seperation, but if you want something very simple and compact a single file can be easier. We have a Sinatra app that has the model, view, controller, and tests in a single file that is less than 250 LOC. It would be more obfuscated to have 5 files of less than 50 LOC each (Some with as little as 4 lines).

If it doesn't provide any option for separation that is bad, but for micro services it can be really nice.

wastedbrains··on Tell HN: PG's 6 Unexpected Advantages of "Cheapness" in a Startup
At what point does hiring make sense or when does hiring not fit being cheap? It seems that you often want to stay cheap by not hiring, but if you are behind on the tech, and need it to be further along to answer questions about your business does it make sense to hire earlier and answer those questions... or try to find other cheaper ways to get those answers with out having a fully developed product.
