warpech··on Old CSS, New CSS (2020)
I wouldn't be surprised if this ended with a smirky one-liner presented in a popular CSS framework, making a full circle from (early HTML):

   <H1><FONT COLOR=red>...</FONT></H1>
to (Tailwind CSS)

   <h1 class="text-red-500">...</h1>
I totally acknowledge the accomplishments that the Web standards and their implementations have made since the early days.

On the other hand, while I am no Tailwind proponent, for many applications "worse is good" and Tailwind is a bridge to the straightforward beginnings of the web design.

warpech··on How to earn $1.5M in revenue from a JavaScript component
This blog post caused a rather heated discussion here on HN back in the day: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=19488642
warpech··on Ask HN: What are you using for public documentation these days?
We (Handsontable) now use VuePress[1] for our docs[2] and we are very happy with it. The best feature for us is the ease of customization.

Our challenge right now with the docs is to get a fantastic code snippet runner there. But that's beyond the scope of your regular documentation management tool, I suppose. VuePress will make it easy for us to integrate our solution.

warpech··on Code Fearlessly (2010)
I tried Web Archive[1] as well, but the same problem.

@dang, maybe you can help?

I tried resubmitting, but HN breaks the link[1]. Maybe I should resubmit from the Web Archive

Speaking as a happy customer for many years: Thank you and hold on!
warpech··on Show HN: Coding Font – A game to find your favorite coding font
Great idea. However, I think that it misses the educational part. Choosing a font should be preceded by learning certain characteristics of fonts that help to read code.

For example, the font Input[1] might not be the most aesthetically pleasing, but it is one of the very few non-monospace developer fonts. The website of this font explains the idea behind it in a way that convinced me.

Maybe it could be done by using a wizard/tutorial to narrow down the fonts list.

warpech··on React Docs Beta – rewritten with hooks and interactive examples
'New React Docs' GitHub Issue is interesting and shines some light on the changes.

Significantly, note that it took a litle bit more than a year from the formulation of this issue to the Beta version. Knowing that there were some holy wars to be fought on the way, I don't think it's too long. Congrats to the team who worked on it!

warpech··on Magit, the magical Git interface (2017)
If GUI is your thing, I recommend giving Sublime Merge a look. I absolutely love it. I've heard that there are similarities to Magit in the terms of capabilities, e.g. staging (or reverting) by line.
warpech··on The Skill of Org Design
That's a very intresting topic for a growing startup. I tried to find books about org design for startups but couldn't find any. My conclusion was that it's because "it depends" is only reasonable advice. But maybe there are some books that you recommend?
warpech··on “Nobody goes from bootstrapping to a $116M expansion.”
Congratulations, Peter! Its not common to see a bootstrapped company here's yet alone from Europe. Also, it's amazing to see this thread from about the time when you started: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=2842183
warpech··on Designing Low Upkeep Software
I have been thinking of such setup lately for another piece of software. Is your sistem distributed in any way? If so, how do you resolve conflicts in version control?
warpech··on Linus Torvalds: “GitHub creates useless garbage merges”
Merges done from a GitHub Pull Request (PR) contain a reference to that PR. The reference is not even a full URL, but just a number (e.g. "#42"). You need to use the GitHub web UI to turn this number into a URL (or deduct it if you know the repo URL). If you have that, then you can go to the Pull Request web page when you can read the whole story about the merge.

What Linus rightfully wants is the whole story right in the commit message of the merge.

I think GitHub purposely makes condensed commit messages for merges as a way to hook users to their web UI.

Second that. I have no hands down experience with it, but I've seen seemingly more complex apps deployed on IPFS https://docs.ipfs.io/concepts/usage-ideas-examples/
warpech··on Coding with Character
That would be possible using a proportional font like Input Sans with elastic tabstops[0]

warpech··on Hacker News in the Style of Teletext
This is awesome! Is there a way to disable the text reveal animations? I am not sure about the intended experience, but on my device they appear quite slow.
warpech··on Hacker News in the Style of Teletext
Great! It could also have some red/green/yellow/blue shortcut buttons at the bottom.
warpech··on Windows 11 still doesn't understand our complex lives – and it hurts
Maybe Microsoft wants to finally make [current year] the "year of the Linux desktop".
warpech··on GitHub Copilot as open source code laundering?
If GitHub Copilot can sign my CLA, stating that it is the author of work, that it transfers the IP to me in exchange for the service subscription price and holds responsibility for copyright infringement, that would be acceptable. Otherwise it's a gray area I don't want to go.
warpech··on The web browser I'm dreaming of
This is a great idea. There are times I want to disable web fonts, audio, video or even images.
warpech··on The web browser I'm dreaming of
Sounds like Firefox 1.0 has all the author needs, just disable iframes, hook in a modern JS engine and you're good to go.
warpech··on I loved jQuery, and still do (2019)
I definitely agree with jQuery's legacy. We owe many parts of modern DOM and JavaScript to jQuery and Prototype.js (may I say that Prototype.js was to JavaScript what jQuery was to DOM).

There is probably no reason today to use Prototype.js, however, jQuery still is a better choice than React/Angular/Vue for small projects if the author prefers some syntactic sugar over plain DOM.

warpech··on Star Citizen Progress Tracker v1.0
I love the UI aesthetics on the timeline. Anyone knows of a components library with such sci-fi look and feel?
warpech··on Utopia, a visual design tool for React, with code as the source of truth
Gret work!

I find it similar to Hadron App[0] that generates modern HTML and CSS. I was very excited about that tool. Unfortunately, the blog[1] and changelog[2] went silent last year.

warpech··on FWA Is Up for Sale
This excited me, because FWA, founded in 2000, is one of the most influential hubs for web design of the Flash-era in Web design (and beyond that). In my first job at an interactive agency, we would kill for an FWA award back ten. Happily, we got some eventually :)

Here's a recent interview with the founder https://www.adforum.com/interviews/fwa-founder-on-why-hes-se...

Calling FWA an "awards program" is a huge understatement in my opinion.

Perhaps that was to be expected after you wrote that you used to use Galeon.
warpech··on Vivaldi 4.0
Thanks for the link!

Browsing the source code, I love the author's habit to make a code commit every single day [0]. That looks like a powerful way to move the project forward while avoiding fatigue.
