warmwaffles··on Ask HN: MacBooks seems to be the only viable option these days
> Framework doesn't even support Linux

Yet. I am pretty sure you could spin up Archlinux / Ubuntu on it. I'd give it a shot if I had the need to replace my Thinkpad.

warmwaffles··on Americans are drowning in spam
I wish I could do this, but I do field calls from people not in my contact list often.
warmwaffles··on How to draw sub cutaways in MS Paint (2015)
Occasionally I stumble on this guy's site and end up going down rabbit holes on ships and submarines. Very fun amount of information.
warmwaffles··on Unit Testing is Overrated (2020)
fuzz testing be damned.
warmwaffles··on A few things to know before stealing my 914
Same here, but with a 1972 BMW. My brake vacuum booster never worked so it is like stomping on a rock. On a cold day you had to feather the throttle, clutch, and brake at the same time until it got warm. I live in a warm climate so it's been tuned to idle well on a hot Texas summer day.
warmwaffles··on A few things to know before stealing my 914
Yea I've seen some pretty sprightly little 90HP cars do autocross really well. Old 2002 BMWs, Porsche 914s, Mini Coopers, and some little Toyota spyders.
warmwaffles··on A few things to know before stealing my 914
I've seen some guys just pull the fuse out for the ECU/PCM on the vehicle as the anti-theft device. The thief will start to crank and crank but never get it started. It should draw attention to them and they'll just grab what they can and leave.
warmwaffles··on Ubiquiti vs. Krebs
Of course it does.
warmwaffles··on I Am a Twenty Year Truck Driver, Part 2: How Truckers Are Paid
This sounds like a really interesting story.
warmwaffles··on Ask HN: Codebases with great, easy to read code?
sqlite too. It's good.
warmwaffles··on Plain Text Sports
> Sites like NHL.com

Unfortunately, in order for me to avoid that hell, I use the mobile app and wish I didn't have to.

warmwaffles··on Show HN: `Git add -p` with multiple buckets
I specifically love committing individual lines in a hunk and leaving the rest not staged until I am good and ready to stage them. It's been a great addition to my workflow and makes self reviewing my stuff easier before I go to send a PR.
warmwaffles··on NYC allows citizens to report idling vehicles in exchange for a cut of the fines
For older diesels, it is more efficient to leave them running than turning them off and restarting them. And I am talking OLD diesel trucks that have indirect injection systems. They'll smoke a hell of a lot more than just letting them idle.

Still turn them off if you don't need it running. Most modern diesels 2004+ are way more efficient in this regard in consumer vehicles and modern diesel trucks are better than they used to be.

warmwaffles··on My entire PC got wiped Do not download
Yes, don't give your main account admin sudo access without a password.

Keep backups on an external file store just in case.

Use a filesystem that has snapshot capabilities.

warmwaffles··on Xdm – Powerfull download accelerator and video downloader
One tool I remember using a lot of was "DownThemAll". It was great to download quickly using a regex for files.
warmwaffles··on C Isn't a Programming Language Anymore
> Rust and Swift cannot simply speak their native and comfortable tongues – they must instead wrap themselves in a grotesque simulacra of C’s skin and make their flesh undulate in the same ways it does.

Sure they can, you just need to build the mechanism that allows them to.

warmwaffles··on Some discouraging anecdotes on how services handle account deletions
I never realized that was the rule. I thought you had to go in and wipe the backups regularly.
warmwaffles··on FlyZero Unveils Final Hydrogen-Powered Airliner Concepts
> Crashing one into the WTC on 9/11 would likely have done substantially less damage.

That's actually an interesting thought. Had the burn not been as constant, would the towers have survived? And then even if they survived, how in the world would it have been repaired?

warmwaffles··on Bunny DNS – A scriptable DNS platform
I have used LuaDNS for quite some time now. I like it.
warmwaffles··on Some discouraging anecdotes on how services handle account deletions
I wonder if they also go through all of their backups and purge the PII. I would be willing to bet, they don't.
warmwaffles··on U.S. eliminates human controls requirement for fully automated vehicles
I was responding to the parent above me. Not the article.
warmwaffles··on U.S. eliminates human controls requirement for fully automated vehicles
IF the car does hit the children even while driving autonomously the driver will be held responsible regardless of overrides. If someone dies, someone is going to jail until the justice system works through it.
warmwaffles··on Postgres Auditing in 150 lines of SQL
Is there something similar for sqlite?
warmwaffles··on Show HN: All desktop software calculators are wrong, so I had to build my own
I use http://www.speedcrunch.org/ now. Very handy; quick to boot and use.
warmwaffles··on Why is California wasting millions on hydrogen fuel pumps?
The biggest drawback of hydrogen as well as gasoline is the fire / explosion risk. I'm curious how the hydrogen will be stored for transport as the fuel source.
warmwaffles··on The Unlicense is an inferior license wrapped in an atrocious name
What is the issue with just declaring the license as MIT? I am not a lawyer and don't understand the drawbacks legally about it.
warmwaffles··on Why enterprise software is bloated
> Hardware is quite cheap.

Joe Armstrong (Erlang) always joked that if you wanted your program to run faster, just wait a few years and the computing power will increase. I found it to be a profound statement about shrugging about optimizing things needlessly unless it was absolutely necessary.

warmwaffles··on How “latency numbers everybody should know” decreased from 1990–2020
Now we just need to either beat the speed of light, or speed light up. (thanks futurama)
warmwaffles··on City Does Not Exist
How does one get an orthographic photo that is not artificially made? I know what an orthographic camera does in 3D graphics, but how can you accomplish that in a real life?
warmwaffles··on SingleFile: Save a complete web page into a single HTML file
This alone is fantastic. I've been looking for an mhtml replacement that worked well across all browsers.
