Unless you use a hybrid approach, like a super efficient turbine generator + solar cells, so your battery doesn't need to be nearly as big.

Pilates could be very useful. Most of it is very low impact strength training - instead of holding up your body weight, you're straining against springs, for example. There are a lot of exercises that don't focus on the arms because Pilates focuses on very discrete muscle groups for each exercise.

I wouldn't start with group classes, though: talk with your physical therapist (are you doing PT to help the recovery?) about appropriate exercises, and maybe sign up for a few introductory private pilates classes. Be sure to inform the instructor about the limitations you have.

In most places telephone deployment involved huge taxes and forced build-out into counties that would be unprofitable. Also, the telephone company paid non-discriminatory fees to the pole/conduit owner.

This was often paid for / subsidized by the Universal Service Fund, because telephone service was seen as something absolutely necessary for modern life. Back in 1934.

ISPs, unfortunately, are not able to be subsidized by the Universal Service Fund. AFAIK.

warfangle··on VPAID ads destroy performance and are still served by major ad networks
Feel your pain. Worked on a video player at a previous company.

Advertising was the biggest pain point.

The fun part is when the ad trafficker would run a VPAID payload with 18 sequential ad-auction vendors. We saw delay from first byte of the player to first byte of the advertisement go from Xms on a fast connection to > 30 seconds.

And then they blamed the player for being slow \o/

warfangle··on VPAID ads destroy performance and are still served by major ad networks
Maybe advertising is moving towards being a dead revenue model, and something else needs to take its place.

warfangle··on Tontines may make sense despite their history of disrepute
> There was rampant shadiness back in the day, including countless swindles perpetrated on the public, both related and unrelated to the tontine. Bribery of newspapers and politicians was also routine, as was embezzlement and plain theft. Magazine exposés riled the public with stories of secret payments and secret blackmail of public officials.

And WaPo thinks our current financial industry can do better? Sounds a lot like NINJA loans and synthetic CDOs ...

Thanks.

Kinda amateur hour with leaving that out of the guide. I wonder how many others have gotten as frustrated and stopped trying to learn it!

I'll submit a PR to update the docs in a lil bit.

warfangle··on Electric vehicle battery costs rapidly declining, Tesla cited as leading
Maybe the battery form factors that are being improved aren't appropriately sized for use in smartphones? :)
warfangle··on Electric vehicle battery costs rapidly declining, Tesla cited as leading
In 2008:

The iPhone had an 1150mAh battery and, according to anandtech [0], 284 minutes of talk time (3G) and 400 minutes of web browsing time (WiFi). It weighed 133 grams.

In 2016:

The iPhone SE has a 1,624mAh battery and gets 556.2[1] minutes of web browsing time on WiFi.

It weighs 113 grams.

Of course, I have no idea what percentage of weight made up the battery for either of these phones. I also have no idea what percentage of the cost to manufacture the battery made up for either of these phones. But I do know the iPhone SE @ 16GB is $100 cheaper than the iPhone 3G @ 16GB was, not accounting for inflation.

We're seeing some improvement, most definitely. But unless someone has data to compare the two batteries directly, we can't say by how much.

The smartphone world has been much more keen on improving power consumption of the hardware in question rather than power storage. At the scale of power that an automobile uses, the opposite is true.

warfangle··on Understanding the Elm type system
They work in the live editor on elm-lang.org. But not locally.

Maybe my environment isn't set up correctly?

I tried the first one (the counter). Copy/pasted directly into a dir as 'counter.elm'. Initialized the dir with 'elm package install' to get the core library.

    $ elm make counter.elm
    I cannot find module 'Html'.

Module 'Main' is trying to import it.

    Potential problems could be:
      * Misspelled the module name
      * Need to add a source directory or new dependency to elm-package.json

Edit/update: source-directories is ["."] in elm-package.json. Dependency "elm-lang/core": "4.0.1 <= v < 5.0.0" is in elm-package.json. elm-version is "0.17.0 <= v < 0.18.0". elm-make is elm-make 0.17 (Elm Platform 0.17.0).

core is installed in elm-stuff/packages:

    macbook:core me$ pwd
    /Users/me/elm-learning/elm-stuff/packages/elm-lang/core
additionally,

    macbook:elm-learning me$ which elm
    /usr/local/bin/elm
Edit2: so, I then guessed that Html wasn't a part of the core lib, and tried to install evancz/html, but apparently that doesn't work with 0.17 (I get an error about version constraints). I'm guessing the elm-lang.org editor doesn't use 0.17?

Any suggestions on where to start with Elm?

Learn You an Elm examples don't compile on the try-it-live console.

Official examples do, but fail to compile on a local install (after setting up elm package install etc).

Any suggestions on where to start troubleshooting?

It's failing to find modules that are in the core standard lib.

warfangle··on Uber’s subprime leases put drivers on road, but leave some shackled
I don't think it matters if the car payments can be counted or not.

But, according to [0] (I'm not sure how accurate/reputable it is; again, IANAA), the deductible portion of $60452=$31,408 is only $2,218.90.

Gas at $5752=$2,964 already extends past that cap.

Assuming her income is taxed before the lease payments are made, and hits her full deductible, she's paying total taxes of $4,437.81

So, net after-tax, after-expense income - I didn't realize that about routine maintenance - is $604-$160-($57 - ($2,218.90/52)) - ($4,437.81/52) = $344 / wk, or $13/hr.

Compared to working multiple inflexibly-houred minimum wage jobs, it's definitely better.

But in no way is it lucrative, or even lower middle class.

warfangle··on Uber’s subprime leases put drivers on road, but leave some shackled
Average city driving speed for LA is 26.8 MPH [0], which means she's driving around 750 miles per week.

She leased a 2015 Honda Civic, which has a rated fuel economy of 31 MPG.

Assuming she gets the rated gas mileage from her civic, she's buying 24 gallons of gasoline per week for 2.39 [1] per, costing her $57.

AAA gives an estimated 5.51 cents per mile for maintenance and tires [2], costing her $41.

So, take home pay after expenses is $604 - $160 - $57 - $41 = $346, or $12.3/hr.

IANAA, so I don't know which of these expenses qualify for deductions when she files. But an annual pay (after expenses) of $17,992 doesn't leave much wiggle room for paying for an accountant, assuming Uber indentured servitude is her only income generating activity.

That's called last mile unbundling, and is one thing the FCC has refused to consider.

aDSL used to be unbundled, too. And while it was unbundled, speeds were increasing.

aDSL speeds have been pretty flat since they removed the requirement, even though newer DSL technologies are available.

warfangle··on Apex lets you build, deploy, and manage AWS Lambda functions with ease
Having to ship your code back to the mothership to run unit tests made it impossible to run TDD (~30 second overhead on each test run). That along with the test coverage requirements made it a pain on the first level. Unless you're using their utterly abysmal in-browser editor.

On the second level is if you're building an app that needs to talk bidirectionally to salesforce on a per customer (app install) basis. Each salesforce site has their own WSDL URLs. That makes sense if all you're doing is building something out for your own Salesforce site.

But if you're building something installable over their marketplace .... it's almost impossible to have a seamless user experience, from the customer's point of view.
