wardedVibe··on The Missing Semester of Your CS Education
I didn't start programming until I was in college and did just fine in my undergrad CS at UW Madison.
wardedVibe··on Nokia launches DIY repairable budget Android phone
Why do none of the good phone options get sold in the US??!? E.g. Sony has one of the few modern smartphones in a reasonable size (xperia 10II (might be the dumbest name though)), and way too few of the bands work in the American market.
wardedVibe··on The FBI now recommends using an ad blocker when searching the web
thanks I hate it.
wardedVibe··on One Year into the War in Ukraine
He mostly does history education through the lens of pop culture. He's a bit outside his expertise on this subject, but uses it as a launching off point for educational content rather than trying to be a "military strategist". He even says as much at the outset.

> keeping in mind that I am largely reliant here on the expertise of others and so am operating from my ‘professional thing explainer’ role, rather than as the expert

Waiting for the day when augmented reality glasses let you block irl ads. Realistically it'll be the opposite first of course.
wardedVibe··on The FBI now recommends using an ad blocker when searching the web
to add one that hasn't been mentioned in this thread, a good hostfile can both block ads and speed up your internet. https://github.com/StevenBlack/hosts

Brave does this, to some degree, but then you have to endorse crypto as the means of solving the monetization problem.

The number of times I had to yell at family members to NOT CLICK THAT ITS AN AD is maddening. It required getting a pretty nasty virus and a complete wipe to actually convince my dad to install adblock.
wardedVibe··on WolfMUD: World of Living Fantasy
Now I'm wondering if anyone has checked whether chat gpt can actually generate iid random numbers, or if it has the same sorts of bias as a human, or something else entirely.
wardedVibe··on Intuit pouring money into lobbying amid push for free government-run tax filing
Because the reigning ideology of anti-trust until the last year has been consumer welfare [0], where a monopoly is basically assumed ok unless you can demonstrate definite harms to consumers.

wardedVibe··on Sea life bounced back fast after the ‘mother of mass extinctions’
I mean, if you start including insects the tree on land is way deeper. There's more size niches in land photosynthesizers for whatever reason, so there's more variety in herbivore size too.
wardedVibe··on Wizards of the Coast Releases SRD Under Creative Commons License (CC-BY-4.0)
Absolutely. Next D&D game I play will probably be using pathfinder.
wardedVibe··on Wizards of the Coast Releases SRD Under Creative Commons License (CC-BY-4.0)
Wizards tried to change their license so that all third party material (books, virtual table tops, anything using the srd) was treated the way videogame mods are, and charge 30% of revenue (this was ogl 1.1). Players unsubscribed from the subscription based en mass, and their largest competitor (paizo, who owns pathfinder, and came about because of the last time they tried this) created an equivalent of the Linux foundation for srd licenses, and sold 8 months of product in 2 weeks.
wardedVibe··on An AI lawyer was set to argue in court – real lawyers shut it down
The difference is that in large swaths of the US, taking away their license is not that different from house arrest.

Breaking the speed limit by 10mph is completely unenforced. I've yet to be on the highway without someone going 20 over, and no enforcement.

wardedVibe··on Amazon has radically transformed small businesses in both the U.S. and China
they have done a bad enough job that fakespot has a viable business model vetting their products.

As long as there's Fred data, so 2005 [0].

wardedVibe··on IRS Free File: Do Your Taxes for Free
Been filing with freetaxusa for years, glad to hear its also good for the employees.
wardedVibe··on I've procrastinated working on my thesis for more than a year
> I do all that but I sometimes make it even more extreme. I make it the goal to produce truly terrible version of the the thing I'm trying to make.

You know, I've read and heard all sorts of advice on writing, and this is the first time I've seen this, and I think it's brilliant. Undergrad me absolutely should have done this, 'cause the perfectionism I grew up with took a long time to unlearn.

Do you have an opinion on getting drunk during the process to lower inhibition? Not a thing I've ever tried, but I've definitely heard of people doing it.

This happened before?
wardedVibe··on OpenAI used Kenyan workers on less than $2 per hour to make ChatGPT less toxic
Now that is an absurd overhead. 500%?! Gross
wardedVibe··on OpenAI used Kenyan workers on less than $2 per hour to make ChatGPT less toxic
It's complicated, because some of our best examples of recently successfully developing economies (Japan, Korea, China) actually had pretty heavy state intervention and tariffs to protect growing industries.
wardedVibe··on The IAB loves tracking users but hates users tracking them
This seems handy, particularly the phone number part. Reminds me of the privacy credit card system, though their backend is privacy compromised.
wardedVibe··on The Fourier Transform, explained in one sentence (2014)
> I just expect "energy" to be a number. Instead, here what we're doing is averaging complex numbers so the output is a complex number. What a complex energy means is left as an exercise to the reader.

They shouldn't be using the term energy, really. That should be reserved for the magnitude of the complex number (so re(z)^2+im(z)^2). You can write a complex number either as a real and imaginary part, or as a amplitude r (the distance you're referencing) and phase (the rotation from r+0im).

> "To find the energy at a particular frequency, spin your signal around a circle at that frequency, and find the center of mass of the plot."

As someone who's spent a lot of time with the subject, I like this better than the original.

wardedVibe··on The Fourier Transform, explained in one sentence (2014)
I don't really like this explanation, tbh. "spin your function" doesn't really make sense. If I didn't already know what they were trying to say, I'd have no idea.
wardedVibe··on YouTube Addiction
I find things like leechblock[0] useful. In general, will power is a poor substitute for designing your environment. It's a limited resource that should only be used to start developing habits.

wardedVibe··on An Update on the Open Game License (OGL)
Yeah, that's why its a gross trope that needs to die.
wardedVibe··on An Update on the Open Game License (OGL)
The analogy says black people were subhuman until they were magically uplifted. That's the offensive part.

Contrast that with the gith, another slave race that broke their bonds. Just as gritty, but not racist.

wardedVibe··on An Update on the Open Game License (OGL)
It works well in video games. All sorts of dark patterns that pump money from players.
