waratuman··on Urban Airship Brings Easy Push Notifications To Android
I don't fully understand Urban Airship. I find it really easy to do push notifications, especially for the iPhone. Why would I use this?
waratuman··on Resque with Redis To Go
I had no idea! And I've been parsing them myself all this time.
waratuman··on Resque with Redis To Go
The line `task "resque:setup" => :environment` in the rake file does the same thing. That way it will load the env on Heroku.
waratuman··on Resque with Redis To Go
For me it was because I was unable to access the log files if a job failed since I was on Heroku. Also it gives me a general idea of how the system behaves; in one second I can tell if the system is normal. I can tell if I need to bump some workers up for a certain queue. Basically it saves me from creating my own 'dashboard'.
waratuman··on Resque with Redis To Go
These are primarily messaging systems. I've considered using them before. Nothing, however, has come close to letting me do introspection like Resque does, and the best part is that I don't need to do any work to get it.
waratuman··on Die young, live fast: The evolution of an underclass
"There is no reason to view the poor as stupid or in any way different from anyone else, says Daniel Nettle of the University of Newcastle in the UK. All of us are simply human beings, making the best of the hand life has dealt us. If we understand this, it won't just change the way we view the lives of the poorest in society, it will also show how misguided many current efforts to tackle society's problems are - and it will suggest better solutions."

I strongly disagree with this statement. This view means that humans are taking the passenger seat when they can in fact take control of their lives. If you live by the motto of "well this is what life gave me" you will never go anywhere.

waratuman··on Introducing Redis To Go
It is cheaper, but I don't think you are running an OS that will only use 12 MB of memory. This also doesn't include backups or system monitoring. And if you are EC2, well this just isn't an option if you are concerned about network latency.
waratuman··on Introducing Redis To Go
The servers are located in EC2, and there is authentication.
waratuman··on Introducing Redis To Go
Good point. The site has been updated and the pricing is per month.
waratuman··on Introducing Redis To Go
Redis is dead simple, but having another server isn't. While most people can easily handle this, managing systems can often spin out of control. If you are starting a project would you rather handle another server or just have someone else manage it and be done in under a min?
waratuman··on Ask HN: What's your computer setup?
Intel Core i7 930, Archlinux + openbox, 13" Macbook
waratuman··on Six Months to Go Until The Largest Tax Hikes in US History
First NASA, now this. Come on!
waratuman··on [dead]
Yes let's make people feel good rather than actually doing something. FAIL
waratuman··on Goodbye Tokyo Cabinet, hello PostgreSQL
Point number 2 for why not to use TC is not very strong. If you need help installing a database perhaps you need to learn a little bit more before managing a webserver.
waratuman··on Ask HN: Why do websites disallow spaces in passwords?
Every site that I have developed has allowed a space.
waratuman··on This Woman Has $97K in Student Loans. Who's to Blame?
I don't understand it myself. $850 is more than enough to live on per month, especially at her age.
waratuman··on Disturbing Scientific Discoveries
That is great! But the point is that this a prediction into the future and is not a fact. A fact is something that you can prove, and you can not prove the future. If you can, come talk to me we can start a business :)
waratuman··on Ask HN's FPGA users: FPGA tool woes & wants?
The apps that I have developed were so small and the requirements for the projects did not require it to be fast. I hope to do a few more projects down the road where speed will be an issue, but that is a ways away.
waratuman··on Ask HN's FPGA users: FPGA tool woes & wants?
I have only done a small amount of FPGA programming, so my comments may not be that useful.

I have only ever used a Xilinx FPGA or CPLD, so seeing how an app would compare on different FPGA's would be interesting, although for the apps that I have developed it probably wouldn't matter that much.

I do agree that the current suits are often bulky and take a long time to learn.

My comments may not be that useful, but I love seeing any thing that is related to embedded programming on HN. Great work!

waratuman··on Disturbing Scientific Discoveries
Some of these aren't even scientific discoveries:

- We’ve already changed the climate for the rest of this century - There have been mass extinctions in the past, and we’re probably in one now.

Seriously?

waratuman··on Better performance in App Engine with new Lisp language Clojure
Where do the 30% and 50% numbers come from?
waratuman··on Ask HN: What is up with Google?
Yeah! Now google is closer to the design of bing and yahoo!
waratuman··on Ask HN: Best Keyboard layout
I tried to switch to Dvorak. It is great for writing text. The one downside is that I have already trained my fingers to the short cuts and coding with Dvorak may not actually be better because the keys you will be using are not what would be used when doing normal typing. I may be wrong though. I just found it really difficult to adjust to the new position of my key bindings.
waratuman··on For the love of POSIX: A more useful way to not segfault from null pointers
Agreed, the code was a clear example of how to handle signals. I could understand it even though I haven't even dealt with signals before.
waratuman··on On The Fear Of Reading Code
Couldn't agree more. Lately I've read through some code in a language that I never used before. But what I have learned from reading the code has had a significant impact on the way in which I write my own code.

In my case I was reading some Clojure code. Functional programming was something I had never really done much of. But after reading through code and programming in it, I can say that it has significantly impacted the way I both write and read Ruby code (not that I'll try to do functional in Ruby though :).

waratuman··on The Blind Men and the Elephant: A Story of Noobs
This is so true, yet when other people ask me for help it is so easy to say "read the api docs" even though I have gone through the same process and frustration.

The whole process of learned a new tool or language requires a lot of work. Sometimes the people who are new to it will give up because they simply were unable to understand some small issue. I suppose it is up to both parties, the leaders and the new developer. The leader has to encourage and support while the new developer must be willing to work hard and not give up.

waratuman··on David Heinemeier Hansson, 37 Signals - Unlearn Your MBA (Audio)
Only after this talk did I fully understand the difference the company he is trying to make / building (37 Signals) and the path that so many others follow.

Great advice that should be considered before any company brings on VC money.

waratuman··on The US Government Adopts OpenID

waratuman··on Textbooks must die
I love my textbooks, it will be sad to see them go if they do. I've always preferred paper to pdf.
waratuman··on Web Applications Should Be Compiled
Na, why should the be compiled! Come on, do some ASIC for some real performance!
