wannabcodr··on Edward Snowden: Permanent Record
It’s impossible to tell without access to the full trove. He could be releasing things in a way that either minimizes or maximizes damage (or anywhere in between) to the US.

Yes, we can only speculate. I’m not in the intelligence community and those who are aren’t likely to voice things publicly.

The whole situation seems odd. A calculating genius spends months planning what is ostensibly a haphazard plan to wind up in Russia supposedly not by choice? Then Omidyar also in Hawaii and connected to Booz buys up the secrets. Seems odd to me.

If Mr. Omidyar were patriotic maybe he would have bought up the secrets and kept 100% of them private, thus extending the oath of secrecy that military officers all take. Mr. Omidyar has come forward as an agent of the free press, not as a sworn patriotic military officer. Difficult to tell his motivations from the outside yet worthy of speculation.

1) I don’t have a clean link to the book

2) Yes Russian speaking folks are in our IC, military, private sector etc. and are certain to have been in his orbit

3) someone could ask mr Omidyar

Given his connections to Booz and his level of intelligence (punahou grad along with Obama etc) He could be a total patriot at heart and it would be difficult to know the difference. Shit, maybe Pierre is a triple agent, a regular Bond good guy. But I’ll tell ya when I heard he bought up the secrets I was sure at that moment that he is either a total patriot or is part of a conspiracy. Probably just an opportunist though. Kind of like the geniuses who foresaw bitcoin’s rise.

Just the fact that, at the time in 2013, a large amount of unknown data was stolen and shared with foreign powers by someone with such privileged access was certain to have catalyzed risk adjustments to global operations, including down to the level of specific human assets. Without a doubt, those in the military are informed that Snowden absolutely did real damage to operations. I’ve heard this in person from multiple military officers. Casualties aren’t going to be discussed.

Snowden’s leaks clearly benefitted adversaries of the NSA:

* domestic global powers such as goog and fb were able to lock down their customer data, which has the downside of shifting unchecked power to those entities

* foreign powers of the us now had confirmed intel on usa’s global intelligence gathering playbook and adjusted accordingly

Additionally, we can perhaps gain insight to any potential upsides or downsides of the proliferation of civil libertarianism that is directly attributable to the actions of Ed Snowden. I do believe personally that the first global superpower (whether the CIA and Google, China, etc) that obtains a way to break all current encryption (and has all of the pcaps) will have a huge upper hand in understanding social effects of this movement of the late 2010’s.

Anyone have a link to steal and read the book for free? I don’t support his cause but wouldn’t mind reading the book. Yes I’m admitting to intent to pirating Ed Snowden’s book. It’s not like I’d be stealing sensitive military secrets and selling them to Omidyar for a pledge up to $250MM. How many Russian speaking people were in his orbit in Hawaii from 2011-2013? How many of them had the operational capacity to pull off a conspiracy to guide Ed to Mother Russia undetected?

If you examine what Ed Snowden leaked, it’s clear he was trying to do significant damage to the NSA. Much or most of what he stole and was leaked was unrelated to domestic surveillance. Much of it revealed our overseas activity. It’s difficult to see how any of it was to the benefit of Western interests.

A comment on hacker news hardly raises suspicion of state sponsorship.
wannabcodr··on A deep dive into iOS Exploit chains found in the wild
From about 2016-2018 I was wondering why my iMessages became fodder for strangers to parrot back to me at coffee shops in the small USA town in which I was living. Of course, I explored the idea that the other parties of these iMessage conversations (usually thousands of miles away with no apparent connection to people in my locale) had somehow betrayed me. This was likely not the case, as I confronted those parties and they adamantly denied discussing or sharing our conversations.

It’s likely that my devices were owned and on display for hackers in my local community. This article is a reminder of the trauma experienced as a result of the paranoia and mistrust I experienced, and a reminder that we are not to trust our consumer devices to really care about our privacy.

If Apple cared about user security they’d build robust defenses into the devices that empower the end user to have a degree of confidence regarding security. Instead, the iPhone on which I’m typing could be at this time could be 100% owned and leaking data in real time and I’m afforded no visual indication of that possibility. The camera and microphone could be hot and transmitting and Apple refuses to offer any way to confirm this in a robust, hardware-visual, unhackable way. That computer camera activity led’s can be hacked (or could be in previous iterations) is indicative of the level of irresponsibility going on.

The blob that is the combination of a modem that interacts with cell towers, and the vastly complex computer tied to it, affords zero insight into what the phone is doing or whether it is betraying me.

And, such privacy breaches are enough to ruin lives. World is full of malicious folks who enjoy hurting others if they can get away with it.

wannabcodr··on U.S. Surgeon General’s Advisory: Marijuana Use and the Developing Brain
You would think this to be universally good advice based on the risks related to alcohol intoxication and alcoholism, but it’s not. Some people would do better to not smoke weed and instead drink moderately and socially.
wannabcodr··on U.S. Surgeon General’s Advisory: Marijuana Use and the Developing Brain
Indeed, I succumbed to the habit as a teenager, when I was indoctrinated by full time users who were also my peers who abused my physically in pre teen years. Upon starting marijuana usage with these peers, they saw that I reacted to the substance and proceeded to abuse me psychologically. This planted the seeds necessary to catalyze a lifetime of delusion and exploration of waste and dipping my toes into counter culture. Now almost entirely alone and disconnected from any meaningful social roots, and suicidal much of the way, I’ve long since disconnected from such malicious people.

The group of friends from high school who didn’t use marijuana ostracized me by 18 and I stopped being alive since then. Now I’m in my 40’s and have been preparing for suicide with increasing inevitability since starting weed. I “gave up” on a fulfilled life as a teenager and have coasted my way to an inevitable suicide as a “stoner”.

wannabcodr··on U.S. Surgeon General’s Advisory: Marijuana Use and the Developing Brain
Marijuana usually begins as a social habit so the pathway to marijuana induced mental issues isn’t going to be so easily tied back to a gene.
wannabcodr··on U.S. Surgeon General’s Advisory: Marijuana Use and the Developing Brain
It’s going to be difficult to draw any meaningful conclusions as you would need to construct identical environments with and without access to marijuana combined with cloned DNA or twin studies. Even then, will that be enough to predict if someone will have an adverse reaction to marijuana based on their DNA?

A simple test to determine if a teenager who tries marijuana should be forced to stay away from it is whether they have an extreme reaction to it.

I’ve struggled with incessant suicidal desire for the last 75% of my years alive on earth. Having given up everything in slow preparation for the act: family, friends, savings, career - I can safely say that the only thing holding me back is the infinite unknown of the afterlife.
