wanderingmind··on Show HN: Lnk – Git-native dotfiles manager
There are so many secrets spread across dot files. Is it possible to encrypt and store them in remote and de-encrypt when it’s pulled to local machines?
wanderingmind··on I decided to pay off a school’s lunch debt
Its amazing that US still doesn't have free school lunches. India started free school lunches in early 60s from southern state of Tamil Nadu and now default across the country. It was one of the main factors that reduced malnutrition in children and improved school attendance. People just sent kids to schools, so they can have a decent meal.
wanderingmind··on You Can Be a Great Designer and Be Completely Unknown
One of the reasons I love listening to 99% Invisible podcast[1]. Not just a great designer is unknown, but the hallmark of a great design is that its almost invisible unless you look for it.

wanderingmind··on Rsync replaced with openrsync on macOS Sequoia
Can you show examples of impactful open software that predates fsf and stallman?
wanderingmind··on GitHub Copilot Pro+
Try Cody from source graph, its quiet light at least on VSCode + Mac and it is very customizable and has models across OpenAI and Anthropic
wanderingmind··on fd: A simple, fast and user-friendly alternative to 'find'
Never knew about Terminal Trove.looks like an awesome place that collects a lot of useful terminal tools. This website must be a separate HN posting.
wanderingmind··on The Lost Art of Logarithms
All you need is plot -log(x) for x between 0 and 1 and you will see that log(x) transforms a uniform line into an exponential decay (towards 1). Its being said in a fancy way. This is also the origin of the log likelihood loss function in ML
wanderingmind··on The cultural divide between mathematics and AI
Terence Tao recently gave a lecture on Machine Assisted Proofs that helped even common folk like me to understand on the upcoming massive changes to Math within the next decade. Especially, its fascinating to see how AI and especially Lean might provide an avenue for large scale collaboration in Math Research, to bring them on par with how research is done in other sciences

wanderingmind··on The DuckDB Local UI
I see many folks trying to build UI for multiple databases, when excellent open source solutions like DBeaver exist. Is there a reason to use this UI compared to DBeaver, through which I can interact almost all major databases?
wanderingmind··on Show HN: PG-Capture – a better way to sync Postgres with Algolia (or Elastic)
Hi, congrats on the show HN. Is it possible for you to Provide some comparison of this tool against other existing tools that can sync Postgres to Elastic or other third-party data providers.
wanderingmind··on Troubleshooting: A skill that never goes obsolete
I feel like the way to think about troubleshooting is to think about it as an umbrella encompassing reliability and quality engineering in software. If you can find ways of showing how reliability and quality of a software can be broken and how it can be improved (simultaneously), then you have a career to make.

Don't wait for stuff to break and react. Be proactive and find ways to demonstrate how it can break and how to fix it.

wanderingmind··on Right to Repair laws have now been proposed in all U.S. states
I don't like being pedantic, but there is a fundamental difference between bill and law. It takes a few people in legislature to introduce a bill but takes majority to create a law with the executive ascent.

The bills have been introduced in 50 states, only 5 have legislated these bills into laws.

wanderingmind··on Feluda – A CLI tool to detect restrictive licenses in dependencies
Amazing work. Does something similar exist for Python? Would love to have something similar integrated for Python dependencies from pypi as well.
wanderingmind··on NSF starts vetting all grants to comply with executive orders
@dang this is turning into flame throwing. Can we please kill the thread as there is nothing intellectually curious being discussed here.
wanderingmind··on Google Pixel 4a's old firmware is gone, trapping users on buggy battery update
Why go all through that pain when graphene OS gives you a straightforward install?
wanderingmind··on Show HN: DeepSeek My User Agent
> Roast: Your 324px-wide screen must be a flip phone from 2004, you’re browsing Hacker News like it’s a personality trait, and Australia’s most exciting export is apparently your Firefox-on-Android-15 setup with 8 cores just to read tech bro headlines.

Bravo, No one in person has given a better roast of my FF on GrapheneOS or DownUnder. I'm sold

wanderingmind··on Show HN: Open-source AI video editor
Please add a dockerfile to generate a docker image that makes it easy to setup and test

wanderingmind··on University of Alabama Engineer Pioneers New Process for Recycling Plastics (2024)
A good approach is to search in scholar to see what other links exist. Here is the link to a preprint https://citeseerx.ist.psu.edu/document?repid=rep1&type=pdf&d...
wanderingmind··on Things we learned about LLMs in 2024
This appears to be an interesting social phenomena. Just wondering if the interaction with the LMM has also reduced our inhabitance to ask dumb questions, when interacting with other people as well.
wanderingmind··on Advent of Code 2024
This server seems to be active, although they are all unofficial servers from enthusiasts.

wanderingmind··on Has anyone used Proton Business Suite rather than Google's for a startup?
I suggest Zoho one. It's been in service for many many years. It's not as feature rich as Google or MSFT, but their service is fantastic and gives you all options a small business needs (office, marketing, CRM, sales, HR, Finance among others).

wanderingmind··on Ask HN: What are your most regretted tech purchases?
Yes sorry forgot that. First thing to do when buying a phone is to enable Developer settings and unlock bootloader I guess
wanderingmind··on Ask HN: What are your most regretted tech purchases?
If you dont need the data two options 1. Install GrapheneOS on it. It's absolutely a more secure option. 2. Reflash it using stock android at flash.android.com
wanderingmind··on 1B nested loop iterations
How in the world is pypy faster than cpython by almost 2 orders of magnitude. Is pypy normally faster in other benchmarks. If so, why? Can some python expert pitch in?
wanderingmind··on Amazon S3 Adds Put-If-Match (Compare-and-Swap)
Does this mean, in theory we will be able to manage multiple concurrent writes/updates to s3 without having to use new solutions like Regatta[1] that was recently launched?

wanderingmind··on WhisperNER: Unified Open Named Entity and Speech Recognition
Looks like only inference available and no fine tuning code available
wanderingmind··on Launch HN: Regatta Storage (YC F24) – Turn S3 into a local-like, POSIX cloud FS

wanderingmind··on The price of shutting down coal power, and what would be gained
This is wishful thinking. Large parts of Africa is yet to become a developing economy. Once that happens, coal consumption is going to increase. Unfortunately, it's the easiest and cheapest way to generate electric power.
