walt_grata··on The Four Horsemen of Agentic Coding
Im one of the more mid to resistant folks and this has never been just a job to me. I did take immense satisfaction from learning, deeply understanding how things work and the consist and repeatable behavior, which is just not there with ai. Especially the consist/repeatable behavior, which to me computers that behave inconsistently aren't nearly as worthwhile.

I love how some people think the scale of a problem doesnt matter. Like yeah we has data brokerw 50 years ago, way less of them and the scope they could collect data about was significantly more limited. That matters a lot
walt_grata··on Claude discovers a novel enzyme system with CRISPR-like repeats
Its going to be an uphill battle. Every story about job losses, consequences to the community from building a datacenter (real or perceived), eminent domain case that blows up, plus all the slop on every platform. Not to mention a lot of normies think techbros are obnoxious, and that is who is hyping ai.

They'll need to show their goal is to help humanity and that all the other peoole arent acceptable collateral damage. Since those other people get to vote.

When did the love of learning disappear from this field? I remember when everyone i talked to was learning something new just to better themselves?
walt_grata··on Singapore’s National Library Board offers micropayments to build reading habits
I swap between kindle and audible daily. The syncing is generally good, byt i have had issues with some books.

This alone has caused my reading to skyrocket. I swear i do 1-2 books a week this way

They wont feel good if the product they pay for doesnt work

Then go broad. It being slightly challenging to legislation and hold people accountable as soon as the model does something.
walt_grata··on AI recursive self-improvement might not come so quickly after all
Dont they also create and score the tests

Very much so in my recollection

Once YC companies started having a negative impact on people and communities. Airbnb and gig worker stuff seems to be the start of it.
walt_grata··on LLMs as a Cognitive Virus
Im 45, and i can tell you getting a cell phone absolutely destroyed my ability to memorize phone numbers. During the 90s when i was in highschool i has all my friends numbers, parents work numbers, etc... memorized, i only know my parents and wife now.

If you don't use a skill, that skill atrophies

walt_grata··on Making the Internet Boring
I deleted almost every app on my phone. I use reddit a bit and hn, but that's all the social stuff i do. Hell i use a pixel and disabled YouTube. It's a bit of a challenge at fist, but much much better after you adjust
walt_grata··on The state of AI in 2026: On the road to ROI
Is there a company that has been more damaging to the software industry than these jokers?
walt_grata··on Humans missed 1 in 3 threats approving AI agent commands across 40k game runs
In ops we call it monitor blindness. Just constant asks get annoying and folks just want to make it stop
walt_grata··on So Reddit has decided that plain HTML is unsafe
I read it as management only knows how to evaluate and reward change even if its just for the sake of the promotion process
walt_grata··on Are we offloading too much of our thinking to AI?
Sure it does. I still nees to know the correct mathematics to type into the calculator and the calculator is deterministic. If you don't understand it without the llm explaining it, how can you be sure you actually understand it? How can you catch mistakes made due to it being non-deterministic? Ask another llm? Same problem
walt_grata··on Why write code in 2026
We have more code than we need. Proof for me is every "smart" device that worked better before we put a computer in it.
walt_grata··on New York City to ban deceptive subscription practices
Blame goes to everyone involved. From the decision makers to the implementors
walt_grata··on Buried Apple feature turns an iPhone into the perfect kids' dumb phone
What did they actually say about some's kida?

Knocking out someones teeth would necessitate filing charges

walt_grata··on Claude, please stop trying to memorize random crap
I write code by hand every day. I do the main part of the feature implementation myself and leave comments for the code i want the agent to write. I have some skills and a command that sets the stage to get the agent to fill in the rest
walt_grata··on Tokenmaxxing is dead, long live tokenmaxxing
Vibes are not evidence, neither is a curated demo. You need actual measured evidence that has an adversarial review to actually prove something without falling to confirmation bias.
walt_grata··on Is Meta destroying its engineering organization?
Yep to the point where its easier without the gps.
walt_grata··on Sixty percent of US consumers say 'AI' in brand messaging is a turnoff
Got any sources for those claims that show how broadly adopted ai is in those countries? I lookes at japan and china and could find a few articles, the anime one cites a single anime made with ai and nothing about its reception and similar results for china
walt_grata··on Is Meta destroying its engineering organization?
Id say it improved until about 2016, since then the additions have generally made the software worse.

More overlays and popups More needlessly verbose navigation instructions Less predictable routes.

Thats just the start

walt_grata··on Facebook is cooked
They aren't blameless, friends and family only should be the default even if you don't engage much. Why would they default it to a bunch of junk.
walt_grata··on Every company building your AI assistant is now an ad company
I'd agree but we're closer to getting forced into the chair than making a decision that's right for us
walt_grata··on Every company building your AI assistant is now an ad company
Yes but able bodied people shouldnt decide to use a wheelchair until their legs attrophy and become useless.
walt_grata··on Infrastructure decisions I endorse or regret after 4 years at a startup (2024)
I've been very happy using cdk for interacting with aws. Much better than terraform and the like.
walt_grata··on 10 years building vertical software: are we cooked?
