>BART likely created huge profits for people who owned land in the areas it services

Unless you try to build housing.

It's circular:

* Few take it because it doesn't meet their need [low denominator]

* Let's spend money to make it meet people's need [numerator goes up]

...

?

Or hasn't been smacked in the face yet , or had someone unhinged on the nyc subway state they are going to kill everyone on the train in a manic episode.

These are not un-rare events at all, it's just in a city with millions of people, most may never have it happen but we've all seen it. Nobody wants it to be them that day.

Walking through the tenderloin on a bad night seems like Carte Blanche to me, and it seems cruel and unusual (except maybe Philadelphia).

Congrats, now nobody will buy your strawberries in this analogy.

"If the powers that be don't want the boat to rock, it simply will not rock. "

Hear me out, it's not so much the powers, it's the people. If you poll people, they might say they want all this information and government reform.

But if you try to give them even 1 bit of hardship to accomplish this, then will not and it is easily forgotten.

This to me makes a lot more sense than 'the powers' in complete control.

wallst07··on What happened to the Snowden archive
Wrong phrasing, a new political party could absolutely come into power. It would just replace one of the two-parties ideologies but be called the same thing and you still have 2 parties.
wallst07··on What happened to the Snowden archive
IMO the underlying reason for this is one or more of:

1) Americans are [statistically speaking] doing very well, high GDP, lots of consumer products to buy, lots of entertainment, lots of cheap food... and wikileaks is not doing anything to help but maybe destroy this.

2) Americans are also doing very poorly, the bottom 25% have bigger problems to deal with than wikileaks. Why would they care if the CIA is watching them if they can't afford next month's rent?

3) Information overload: Similiar to 1, we get overloaded with things we ought to care about, climate, wiki leaks, wars.... it's too much and people really just want. #1.

Or maybe I'm off...

https://montessoriacademy.com.au/montessori-work-cycle-guide...

There are whole studies and philosophies on work/play. The one here answering your question is the 'Work Cycle' and the step 'Return Work'.

wallst07··on Attention is all you have
I agree, but my NAS is the messy room and I don't want to clean it but I want it cleaned.

I need to find the LLM tool that "cleans my room" for me by rearranging my 20+ year old dir layout that just keeps growing.

wallst07··on Robin Williams' Daughter to Fans Creating AI Videos: 'Have Some Shame'
Bob Ross was a content creator, and I would like to think if he were alive he'd still be painting, just using a different platform to share. I don't think he would care one bit if people made AI art as long as they were happy and kind.
wallst07··on Backups Aren't Simple
I didn't answer because it's had and I'd rather not give a incorrect answer.

And, I may have conflated issues: Iphone Storage < Icloud storage vs opposite way.

wallst07··on Backups Aren't Simple
If Seinfeld told a backup joke:

"You know how to take the backup, you just don't know how to restore the backup. And that's really the most important part of the backup, the restoring. Anybody can just copy a file!"

wallst07··on Backups Aren't Simple
Amazing question with nobody really answering your question 100%.

The answer is : it's hard. If you only have a iphone and more photos on your icloud than can fit on your phone, you're kinda screwed if you don't know what you're doing.

AFAIK Apple makes it very difficult to get all your icloud photos bulk downloaded, original quality off icloud.

Google is no better.

It's much easier to start backing up from the beginning but once you're stuck on icloud it's hard.

wallst07··on Backups Aren't Simple
Reminds me of a story: I was sitting at a restaurant waiting for my food. I casually notice two young children in the next booth playing with a phone, but pay little attention.

Moments later their dad (presumably) comes back and asks for his phone back and sits down with their food. The kids are eating and the dad is fumbling with his phone with odd looks and I can see his frustration growing.

Then out I hear something like "What did you do to my phone?" repeated loudly over and over. "You erased my phone, it's gone."

The small children (guessing) had figured out how to factory reset his phone.

My thought at the time was something like : How many times did I do something as a toddler I don't remember to piss of my dad like that and that he never got mad or brought it up later (Lots of times knowing myself).

wallst07··on Nike exits the S&P 100 after 18 years and a $200B market-cap wipeout
That's a good one, I can get up without hands no problems. Sitting without a thud is a bit harder.

Watch a toddler move around on the ground, they are incredible flexible and strong.

wallst07··on Show HN: An e-ink frame that hears birds and draws them as 1800s illustrations
For hanging as art, just found this https://github.com/dmellok/el133-pico-driver

Uses a native C driver instead of python so you can run the display off a battery as it's more efficient.

wallst07··on JetKVM Mini
I've had a number of thinkpads and nucs with vpro/amt. All the things you say are technically correct, in practice the software and feature set are horribly documented. I've spent numerous hours trying to get it to work reliably only to find out something is too old or not supported or just disabled.

The phsyical kvms just work and worth the $.

wallst07··on Data collected by cars and sold to third parties
Because HN/nerds like to think of ourselves as objective, open to the truth and data driven results. Then we find out, we're no better than the average, just different topics.
wallst07··on Nike exits the S&P 100 after 18 years and a $200B market-cap wipeout
MJ was not a "Black man" he was the best player of all time, That is what people see, not color. Everyone wanted to be like Mike.

I swear the people arguing for this are some of the most racist thinking people, at least the Maga crowd is up front with it.

wallst07··on Nike exits the S&P 100 after 18 years and a $200B market-cap wipeout
This is the naive short term way to think of a stock price. I assure you fund managers, hedge funds etc do not. And I'm sure you can reply with an anecdote, but that doesn't prove the rule of 'any stock'.
wallst07··on Nike exits the S&P 100 after 18 years and a $200B market-cap wipeout
Over 50 here, I use the following as a test of someone's general balance/strength/flexibility:

Taking off your socks/shoes(tie/untie) without sitting down: hard for most in their 20/30s. Very hard with out bending over.

Pants are what gets hard when you get older, if you can't put on/off pants without sitting down I'd advise some basic training and/or doctor to help.

*assumes otherwise healthy person with no disabilities. I'm not a doctor, this is my own opinion.

wallst07··on The EPA is planning to scrap public review rules for data center pollution
Let's just say the EPA can enforce vaguely written laws starting day 0 against property you own but you had absolutely nothing to do with the issue.

Vague example: You buy a house, a month later you get a demand letter from the EPA that you need to raise your home, spend millions to clean the ground contamination that was caused by a owner before you were born and more than 3 transactions before yours.

And they are not nice, they will gladly bankrupt you and put you in jail. Selling it or giving it to the EPA to release the obligation is not a option. The EPA can sometimes look a lot like a cartel.

wallst07··on The EPA is planning to scrap public review rules for data center pollution
You're not wrong, but I'm fairly certain that if we did have a multi party system and ranked voting, not much would be different.

This is because the people on HN, Reddit etc are a minority. The views expressed here are not publicly supported by the people who actually go out and vote. Those people are not online writing in these long threads on the same topics over and over again.

wallst07··on The EPA is planning to scrap public review rules for data center pollution
Here's a simple one, start at your state level. Talk to your state representative, should be easy enough to meet with them.

What are they doing about DC water and energy level requirements in your own state.

Where do you live so I can get that same feeling?

I was in BPC during Sandy, never lost power, never had flooding. Stayed around to help get our servers moved over to DR. So yes, I remember.

Thankfully, people are seeing how bad NY and CA State governments are and are wisely moving what they can out of it. https://www.txse.com/

wallst07··on The EPA is planning to scrap public review rules for data center pollution
It's "all politics" when you agree to a particular issue

It's "regime" or "fascism" when you don't.

wallst07··on The EPA is planning to scrap public review rules for data center pollution
EPA is garbage, pray you never end up on the wrong side of one of their poorly written enforcement mandates. They will take down your life's work for something you have no control over.
