wallmountedtv··on Update to Kagi Search Pricing
An important tidbit from their Discord. The AI is just the commercial one from OpenAI. Paying $5 per 50 search summaries for it according to the founder of Kagi.[1] It is not in-house.

wallmountedtv··on Facebook Announces Meta Verified
My family has taken up Snapchat for its place. You got stories and family group chats where people send images that expire in 24 hours.

No ads between posts, no "you might like" between posts, no "smart feeds" that ruin the order of posts. Works pretty well overall.

wallmountedtv··on Linode rebranded as Akamai’s cloud computing services
I have a strong suspicion that the sponsorships will be going away now.

Akamai killed the enthusiast-run Linode to instead create executive-run cloud computing services. That is what the difference is, and why these news are so worrisome for enthusiasts.

wallmountedtv··on Google Fires Employee of over 16 Years with Automated Email
Well the main trouble is that you don't get rewarded for sticking around, being paid essentially the same as a "new hire" as "can poke holes and come with ideas" being very similar in pay scales.

Only way to scale is to hit your knees in every two years to get a proper pay raise. Even if detrimental to your knowledge and work place.

wallmountedtv··on Bitwarden Acquires Passwordless.dev
You can use vaultwarden, which is a re-implementation in Rust that is much more lightweight than the official .NET version.
wallmountedtv··on Codeberg launches Forgejo – Gitea fork
EUPL?
wallmountedtv··on Activision’s faulty anti-cheat software
A counter argument would be that, those who are allowed by the anti-cheat to play freely for a decade, are those who were filtered down by the anti-cheat to who it sees as a "good player" to itself. But when the anti-cheat finds someone that they do not like, for example a developer who has tooling such as CheatEngine, WireShark, AHK, or WSL installed, will get discriminated against in preemptive bans, unable to get more than be a casual in said games.

It also does not help that "good players" by the anti-cheat's eye will often enable this bias by doubling down whatever the anti-cheat says is bad. A black box that no human fully understands the behavior of, even its own developers, yet is ultimately trusted without review of anyone hit by a ban. A system ripe for enabling bias to absolutely excessive proportions, and need to be held in better check.

wallmountedtv··on CPSC calls for full recall of all Onewheel self-balancing electric skateboards
EUCs do not seem like a very good alternative to the OneWheel. I think a huge draw to OneWheel is that it looks like a skateboard, but has one big wheel so it handles most terrain without trouble, helping to avoid the pebble paranoia you usually develop riding on a normal skateboard.

I did find the Trotter MAGWheel T3 as an alternative, but it reviews badly from its "prototype without any polish" experience in use.

It sucks that there seemingly does not exist a good alternative to OneWheel, other than changing to a different product category entirely. I wish we can get to see some true competition in the one-wheeled skateboard category soon.

wallmountedtv··on Being Ridiculed for My Open Source Project (2013)
Each day i contribute to open source, i keep thinking of putting it behind me. The amount of bullshit that comes my way, even now 5 years down the line, is really taking its toll. I love to share and make everything i do open. But the people really put a drain on my energy to even try.
wallmountedtv··on Why I program in Erlang (2012)
How the Nerves website has absolutely zero information about what it is, and only holds very vauge points of "Scalable", "Adaptable", "Secure".

Its not until you get to their documentation you can figure out what it is: "Nerves defines a new way to build embedded systems using Elixir. It is specifically designed for embedded systems, not desktop or server systems." Why is this not front and center?

Also to find a single code example, you need to look it up online, because its only in their github repo? https://github.com/nerves-project/nerves_examples

Why do so many websites nowadays just NOT tell you what they are attempting to sell you? Its so weird and frustrating.

wallmountedtv··on Why Is Markdown Popular?
> Markdown will never get beyond developers.

Did the author just look past Slack, Reddit, Discord, Teams, and more? I am honestly lost how one could make such a statement when its already in so many places where the primary audience is non-developers. They even list Reddit in their own post, but still make this statement?!

wallmountedtv··on Gamification affects software developers: Cautionary evidence from GitHub
I would not put it on linearly incrementing version numbers, as it is a great label to show known stable git hashes. But version numbers should not be the only way to fetch in packages.
wallmountedtv··on Gamification affects software developers: Cautionary evidence from GitHub
"If You institute a revocation of a GitHub star against any entity (including cross-repository and cross-user removals) alleging that the Work or a Contribution incorporated within the Work no longer constitutes a GitHub star, then any patent licenses granted to You under this License for that Work shall terminate immediately as of the date such a revocation is performed."
wallmountedtv··on Fake Books
No.[1] Also their name "Matt Martin" is suspiciously generic, making it hard to search for other than the direct link given in the article to the Amazon listing.

wallmountedtv··on Fake Books
It got published about 30 minutes ago. And has gotten a lot of likes early on, pushing it up.
wallmountedtv··on Flox, Nix for Simplicity and Scale
Is it closed source? Why make flox instead of further developing nix?
wallmountedtv··on Authors’ names have ‘astonishing’ influence on peer reviewers: study
Norway really has a huge issue of sensationalism in local papers, and it does not help that even the government funded NRK is deep into sensationalism as well.

Opening NRK right now gives "Now the government must see the madness in this", "Electricity prices can make going to the cinema more expensive", and "He is so tired" as the top articles for today.

I follow so much International/American news thanks to publications like Reuters, AP, and Qz. But no matter how much time or money I use, I can not follow my own country's news. I definitely am not alone in this, and it terrifies me how unworried most of Norway seems to be about this fact as well.

Its a ticking time bomb.

wallmountedtv··on LaTeX Makes Me Angry
I personally often go to pandoc markdown. Quick translations to latex. Has first class support for latex packages (just include them in your pandoc's header). TeX like syntax for math with `$\delta$` for inline and `$$x=2$$` for newlines. Subscript/Superscript is `CO~2~` and `e=mc^2^`.

A very comfy way to work once you get used to it.

wallmountedtv··on Ask HN: Help me summon the strength to finish my project
I'd recommend avoiding it. Its a rather harmful book about some guy's ramblings, ignorance, and religious beliefs. Its the same book that states that Hitler started WW2 because he could not start on a new canvas, as well as the book stating that mental-heath disorders were made up by marketing companies to sell you stuff. I really dont know how you could recommend this for self-help.
wallmountedtv··on Ask HN: How to find what I am really good at?
Trying to find what you are good at is not the right approach. But you are onto something in this question, just asking about the wrong part.

What is it with these projects, hobbies, and jobs that disinterest you? What are you avoiding?

Armchair-ing: Maybe you are in the cycle of having higher expectations than what you can create? Avoiding creating a project to finish as the result is not what you had set your expectation to?

wallmountedtv··on 4th leak reported on Nord Stream pipelines in Baltic Sea
Minimal. Its only the pipes leftover gas that is escaping, compared to a oil field. Together with that gas rises, contamination of water is minimal, again compared to what an oil leak would do. Adding up to that experts say that long-term effects of these leaks are essentially not going to be noticeable.[1]

wallmountedtv··on How to build a personal webpage from scratch
There are free "forever" VPS options from Google, Azure, and Oracle that you can use to deploy non-commercial servers. And together with either a free subdomain provider, or something like freenom to find a free domain registrar, you can have a fully free setup without using "no code" providers.

Perfect to learn on without needing to use money.

wallmountedtv··on gPodder: A simple, open-source podcast client
Reminds me of how i used to run Minecraft on a school computer trough this software on a USB stick i brought to school. Good times.

You can do similar things on Linux as well, but there it is easy to fix by setting `noexec` on /home.

wallmountedtv··on Falsehoods programmers believe about email
A counter argument on this is also to hold a standard across your software suite. The amount of times i have found websites that allow `email+tag@example.com` on sign up but then promptly break at the backend has become more than i can count on one hand.

While the argument that supporting all valid email addressing may not be the best idea, holding a uniform standard across your own systems is.

wallmountedtv··on Plex: Important notice of a potential data breach
I also want to bring into light that Jellyfin is not very secure either [1], its sadly not in a great place to replace Plex still.

wallmountedtv··on Twilio incident: What Signal users need to know
Too bad it is owned by a crypto company, Loki.
wallmountedtv··on S3 isn't getting cheaper
Acting on splitting up the monopolies. Making Amazon/Google/Meta into multiple smaller companies. As antitrust fines have now just become the exepences one pay to run a monopoly now.
wallmountedtv··on I visited a friend who is watching Breaking Bad. Now clips appear on my YouTube?
Its most likely paranoia paired with the Baader–Meinhof phenomenon[1] rather than a big conspiracy of "the machines are listening".

wallmountedtv··on Our plans for Thunderbird on Android
Yeah but they cannot take Thunderbird mobile back. Its now Mozilla property, which is the actual scary part.
wallmountedtv··on uBlacklist – Block specific sites from appearing in Google search results
It works with duckduckgo as well, you just enable it in the options menu.
