walkingthisquai··on China has added forest the size of Texas since 1990
Well 25-30% of the population was enslaved in the Roman empire so that's not ideal.
walkingthisquai··on Gemini in Chrome
When you go to the Gemini in Chrome section on the same privacy page it states:

'When you use the Gemini in Chrome feature, Gemini collects and processes page content and the URL from the browser tab you’re viewing by default. Some of the page content Gemini uses might not be visible to you."

I think they're being reasonably explicit about what they're doing.

Note: I'm in the EU so not sure if this is what's shown everywhere else.

It's right there in the privacy center. The answer is quite unambiguously yes by the way. (This is for the Gemini app):

"How your data is used Google uses this data, as described in our Privacy Policy, to:

Provide our services Maintain and improve our services Develop new services Personalise our services (learn more) Customise our services Communicate with you Measure performance Protect Google, our users and the public

These uses extend to the generative AI models and other machine-learning technologies powering our services."

walkingthisquai··on Apple and Meta fined millions for breaching EU law
Well... Though I agree with you in principle, the DMA does target specific gatekeeper companies and the criteria for these were set conveniently to ensure no EU company is regulated by it. So I can see their point a little

Well you've got to get those diamond manufacturing jobs back to the US somehow
walkingthisquai··on To buy a Tesla Model 3, only to end up in hell
Sure, I just wanted to share some info on far-right/neo-nazi related people and orgs that Musk is linked to, as parent didn't seem to be aware.

He's supporting the AFD in Germany among others. For a 5 min overview see here: https://youtu.be/NjWl_RNDMSA
walkingthisquai··on Parkinsons patient "feels cured" with new adaptive deep brain stimulation device
I'm (genuinely) quite surprised by that. A family member had the procedure a year ago and the difference is so immediate and dramatic. Thanks for the links
walkingthisquai··on California teacher dies from suspected rabid bat bite
We had a bat in our bedroom here in France a couple of years ago. We weren't quite sure what to do so checked online and the diametrically opposed advice was hilarious. US sources read like this thread, whereas the French ones were like leave your windows open to allow them to fly out and a bunch of links to why bats are amazing and protected animals.

I guess the incidence rate is a bit higher in the US but yeah interesting risk management.

walkingthisquai··on An update on Google's compliance with the DMA
Where I am (France) there is no such button in the mini map.

The workaround I found, after at first assuming that the maps integration was broken, is to click the directions button underneath the map. This opens Maps and draws a route from my current location to the address you searched. Which you then have to dismiss and zoom to what you were looking for. So a few clicks + navigation.

It's the principle though. It's making my user experience worse and I think it's fair for Google to point that out.

walkingthisquai··on An update on Google's compliance with the DMA
I know everyone loves hating on Google here, but some of the changes that they were required to make are genuinely quite annoying. Maps results on the search page don't work like they used to. Clicking the mini-map doesn't open to Google Maps anymore, so you have to relearn some behaviours. I know it's minor stuff (for now), but as a long time happy user of Maps, this kind of thing does not benefit me, and I don't get a say in it.
