waldfee··on People start hating their jobs at 35
I recently reduced my weekly hours and am now working only 4 days a week. its so much better.

People are dumbfounded when i tell them, they do not understand that free time is more important to me than money. as long as i can live comfortably and use my new free time i will trade money for time. end goal is 2 days a week - no idea if thats possible, but 3 days is a must.

if you can do it financially and with your job situation i can only recommend it. i still giggle like a little girl every friday because i dont have to go to work

i think these solutions use the debug api, not sure.

xprivacy allows for spoofing all kinds of data like phonebook, calendar, even allows to not expose the clipboard.

if only gps data is relevant, this non rooted solution is of course easier to set up.

waldfee··on Verizon, AT&T and Sprint to Limit Sales of Cellphone Location Data
Of course it won't. even if you could it would not matter because the cell towers know where you are.

My mentioning of xprivacy was only to further knowledge that you can at least spoof data for the software side (apps installed on the device)

waldfee··on Verizon, AT&T and Sprint to Limit Sales of Cellphone Location Data
For this case you are out of luck since the network provider tracks you through their cell towers.

For spoofing data for apps, if you are on android and have a rooted device there is xposed with xprivacy

waldfee··on GnuPG Fundraising Rally
You're right. Not only GnuPG but everything around it (mostly email clients) are in dire need of a UX overhaul.

Presenting such a complicated technical topic only in it's purely technical form is not enough imho. Clear and concise explanation for each and every action and item that gets displayed (and the whys!) would do wonders.

waldfee··on GnuPG Fundraising Rally
Useful spending of that money would be UX issues, making the horror that is using this stuff bearable.

Usability is atrocious and if you do not use it all the time you have to google the simplest things (for which the results are mostly outdated or wrong or bad practice so you have to be careful with which explanation you follow) which the software itself could explain to you.

waldfee··on Noncompete Clauses: Signing Away the Right to Get a New Job
I've signed all the non-compete clauses that where present in my contracts because those clauses are simply null and void.

Also simply asking people to give over their seat. That's exactly what the app does. Why not ask people directly? Just to avoid having to talk to them? Seems very strange to me.

Can confirm. All of Sanderson's books are great, but Stormlight is the one that truly stands out.

waldfee··on Beware of Developers Who Do Negative Work
4, 6 and 7 are my main problems with this.

i occasionally have to work with a big application which is essentially written 100% in sql. you simply can't easily change parts without testing the whole thing from start to finish because automated testing at a granular level is horrible. and sql does not lend itself to encapsulation, it does everything to make it hard to break stuff down to manageable pieces

and in sql everything you do is just so complicated, tons of boilerplate stuff you would not have in a real programming language. it's called "query language" after all, not "programming language". so don't use it for that

waldfee··on Ask HN: How are credentials managed at your company?
Active Directory for everything internal

external stuff is managed via Teampass (on premise shared pw manager), which supports shared credentials and user-only credentials

although teampass is a bit wonky at times, it works pretty well for us
