Just to reiterate - this was _entirely passive_. I did nothing but enable the Bluetooth presence detection module in Home Assistant on my Raspberry Pi, and over time it built up a detailed log of when nearly all of my neighbors were home or away.
Luckily I was able to quickly turn off tracking of devices that weren't explicitly enabled.
What confuses me, is that I thought iPhones had randomized MAC addresses? In the Home Assistant known_devices.yaml file, you can give aliases to phones based on their MAC address. And my iPhone has never changed it's MAC address, because Home Assistant continues to track it with ease. Not entirely sure how that works.
I finally got my home backup system setup to my liking, and it's super simple and requires little to no effort on upkeep:
1. Google Photos synced to Google Drive. 2. Google Backup & Sync installed on the computer. 3. Backblaze Personal Backup software installed on the computer.
Every time I take a picture, edit a document, etc., it's automatically and effortlessly synced to Backblaze.
I had a Linux Box with Restic installed, but required more effort than I wanted to put in.
Now I'm going to have to rethink how I backup my 40k+ photos.
Money vs. experience, it's really tough for me to figure out what's more important.
I like the concept of ProtonMail (that my email is supposedly encrypted at rest and accessible only by me) but honestly the conversation here steers me away from it. Also the interface is fairly slow.
The top recommendation here seems to be FastMail, which I'm doing a trial run of now.
I actually felt it was a halfway decent description of MCMC, but I could see criticisms from both perspectives above.
- When I'm cooking and my hands are dirty and I want to set a timer
- When I'm cooking and my hands are dirty and I want to change music/lower volume/raise volume/call someone (or do a measurement conversion)
- Turning off all the lights in my house when I'm already in bed and forgot whether I left some on
- Laying in bed with the gf and asking random questions out of curiosity
- Asking how long it will take to get somewhere if my gf and I are pondering some place to eat but are at the dinner table without our phones
- Get home after having a few beers and dive into the messy chicken wings with both my hands, and then realize I want to turn on the TV, play a show or change the current one on my Shield.. perfect use for the GH
- Since I already look at my phone way too much (potentially straining muscles in my neck), I can leave my phone in another room and still get quick answers to deep life questions without tilting my neck downwards
They're all __super__ minor of course, but honestly, I'm so used to the convenience now it actually feels weird to have to do some of these things 'manually'. I do understand there are serious concerns about privacy that may or may not offset the benefits, definitely plenty of room for discussion on that.
That's why, although I LOVE what I do, part of me thinks I need to make sure I'm in a position to move into management at some point - because I see a lot less ability for automation in areas that require "people" skills over the next few decades. On the other hand, I LOVE what I do. What's that French phrase? C'est la vie? I think it translates into "you're screwed, one way or another."
